  1. It does look more like an electrical problem now but I do not understand how or why things changed when I had a poke around at the boost diaphragm. Oh well. I'll get hold of a new diode pack and see what happens Thanks.
  2. Made some progress today but I do not understand how. Had a look at the boost diaphragm as monkie suggested. It all looked ok, no holes or splits so put it back together and ran the engine again. Rather than go round to the key I just pulled the wire to see if it would stop and it did. Started it again but it still did not stop with the key. I put a little bulb between the solenoid and the wire and with the engine running and the key turned off it glows very faintly. If I disconnect the alternator plug it starts and stops on the key. I read on another forum that a diode between the solenoid and the alternator could solve the residual charge problem but I am not clear where or on which wire the diode should go. Any idea? I am a little more encouraged that the engine seems to be turning off in some form now but am at a complete lose as to how removing and refitting the boost diaphragm has done something. Western, it could well be leaking from there as well. It just seems to do it inconsistently. Today when I went to look at the pump it was quite dry and no puddles while other days its covered in diesel. Snagger, the insides of the solenoid were clean when I took it off no sign of any debris. I had a good look in the hole it screws into as well and could see nothing. Thanks again, Stephen.
  3. Thanks for the ideas. The puddle forms roughly under the pump after its dripped onto the axle. All the fuel lines are undisturbed so should be fine but I'll double check them along with the boost diaphragm at the weekend. Thanks again, Stephen.
  4. I have a new problem which is puzzling me (not difficult). Basically the engine (1988 2.5TD) will not turn off at the key and has to be stalled, but it seems to be more than a bad stop solenoid. The pump has been leaking "sometimes" for a number of months. Most of the time it is fine but sometimes I will find a large puddle of diesel under it. More often than not it happens after I have filled the tank, but not always. As it does not leak consistently I have not been able to pinpoint where it is leaking from. The other day after I found another diesel puddle I was having a look at it and noticed that the stop solenoid was a bit wet so thought I might as well change it, it might help a little even though I know its not all coming from there. Anyway, I put in the new solenoid, ran the engine a little and tried to turn it off but it would not do so. Put the old one back in and now it won't stop either. I bought a third one just in case but same results. I am getting 12v from the wire with the ignition on and nothing with it off. All three solenoids work when current is applied. The engine continues to run when I pull the wire from the solenoid. It will also start with the wire disconnected. With the ignition off and the engine running the battery light comes on, don't know if that means anything There was no swarf or metal fragments on the solenoid when I took it out. It runs fine, though has been a bit more smokey on startup than normal in recent months, power seems normal. Any ideas gratefully received Thanks, Stephen.
