  1. Depends if you mean an electronically controlled mechanical injection pump (as I believe later 300TDi's were) or full electronic fuel injection.

Proper Diesel EFI is vastly more demanding than petrol EFI, the MegaSquirt community are working on it and I've no doubt they'll succeed but currently it can't do it as standard. The control needed is similar or better than petrol ignition control; you have to fire injectors sequentially not just batch/alternating as per petrol FI, the timing of the squirt is important not just the overall length and modern engines have multiple squirts per cycle to improve all sorts of things like emissions and smoothness.

It's all doable, it's just more processing power, timing resolution, signal routing etc. to make work.

I didn't think it was as simple (or not in this case), thats why I've asked the question.

What is needed for the EDC system? Is it worth it? Somebody mentioned around 140bhp with this management. Is this correct?

Im looking at ways to increase torque/power for towing heavy loads without going to a td5 (affordability) plus I wouldn't mind a bit of challenge  . When towing on the motorway big gradients are taking their toll on my 300tdi, which is well serviced with the pump tweaked and boost set at 18psi.

Other than mangement and an expensive intercooler I don't have many options.

    Cheers.

  2. Has anybody heard of it being done? Im not talking about the late ones with the fly by wire to the pump, I mean stand alone engine management such as megasquirt? I realise it would be a mix match of components, just wondering if it'd been tried/done.

I would be interested if it could be done without costing ££££'s as it could potentially release power/torque.

    Cheers.

  3. I've lost my front electric windows after putting them to wash mi Disco... I know I shouldnt wash it

All was fine, put them up, turned ignition off... washed it. Came to move it, no front window movement!.

The backs are disconnected in the doors from a previous fault so cant comment on them apart from there's power to the switches and there is to the fronts. I've tried swopping the switches, no difference. Changed the fuse, no difference and ive got power to the rear switches but not the front.

Can anybody shed any light? I could really do with sorting it before tomorra!

  4. The clutch itself seems fine, no clutch smells. Offroading was relatively light stuff (tong @ bradford)... no big hills, just ticking over and the odd getting jammed in scenario. No clutch hammering tackle. The pedal seems fine apart from the play in it.

  5. Rubber piping? Do you mean the loop that joins the master and slave? I've checked for leaks in the system everywhere no problems. The Header was still full of fluid when I lost the pedal whilst offroad. Inspected pushrod today, ok.

    Cheers.

  6. Ive got a few problems with the clutch on my disco and wonder if anybody can shed any light on the matter.

I fitted a valeo heavy duty clutch last weekend, with new clutch fork and release bearing. Went on a play day without a hitch right until the end where I lost the pedal. Couldn't get any gears, I drove it home without a clutch pedal... it was mostly motorways so coped ok. Clutch pedal was perfect, no play.

The slave cylinder had the slightest of weeps when I did the the clutch and I mean the slightest.

Today I've changed the master and then the slave after no difference, it was one from a defender apart from the little round (diaphram?) thats bolted to the bracket with slave, I don't know what this is called :( . This was missing from the donar so I used the one that was on my disco.

I bled the system and got a good pedal and thought all was ok. I left it for a couple of hours doing other maintenance  and lost the pedal. I thought it must be air in the system. So I slackened the bleed nipple and let gravity bleed it for half an hour or so, as was recommended by a friend. Which after locking off and much pedal pumping has left a usable clutch pedal, but... it's still not right. There's about an inch of play before I get a pedal.

I've drove it for about 10 miles and the inch seemed to be getting more like an inch and half. Im gonna leave it and inspect in the morning.

Can anybody shed any light on this? Air in the system? I have also noticed a slight 'judder' after changing both cylinders today that wasn't there before I changed them.

  7. My mate has a garage and has had two disco td5's recently for services, the last services on both were done at lr dealers... you wouldn't believe the things they didn't do that they said they had. Shocking, and here's me considering buying a new disco to use everyday... think i'll stick with the golf tdi:D

  8. The post concurs with you...

ST3 Focus would be £60 more a month than LPG Disco getting equivalentish MPG of 36mpg... (ie Half price fuel)

The focus and polo calculations were on 53 and 50 mpg respectively...

The gist of the post is that I am going to run the Disco...

So it may be me not being clear rather than you being a muppet Davey! :)

Ahh right... I'd rather amble about in a disco aswell ;)

  9. I have been doing some calcs, as I am changing jobs and am going to be quite a bit of travelling till we relocate.

I have worked out that I will be doing about 330miles a week and thought purchase of a small 'normal' car would be sensible.. as you do... :(

The conclusion I have come to is that I will be doing it in the Disco! :)... and here is why...

At an Optimistic 18mpg at 75 with Cruise... I have calculated with the power of excel that the following monthly savings could be made with a car swap/ third car purchase:

by the way Landy Fuel £44.95 per week to run

    Monthly Savings:

    Focus 1.4 - £51

    Focus 1.6 - £45

    Focus 1.8 - £34

    Focus 2.0 - £11

    Focus TDCi- £62

    Focus ST - £60 More!!

    Polo Diesel - £60

For £15 week I get to go in my Disco than a crappy Polo Diesel... or I fork out another £2-3k on a newer Diseasel Focus (insert eurobox here) to save the same amount...

...to maintain some driving pleasure.. a 2.0 Focus would only save me £3 a week!...

Thought it was a good bit of news in the world of downsizing and negative press for the costs of running a nasty gas guzzler...

If Im being a muppet please tell me... could you explain how a focus st; st170 2.0li or 2.5t (newer version) will return more than your disco? Ive had both and the st170 returns 25mpg mixed driving and the 2.5t is ridiculous on fuel.

If you want fuel economy buy a vw lupo 1.4tdi... 68 mpg I kid you not.

If the lupo is too small a mk4 golf gt tdi 130/150 will return 53+ mpg on a motorway run all day. Clarkson said it and its true.

  10. This sounds about right. My old challenge disco was a v8 and was mostly ok in water if you ran quality ht leads on it and ran a bit of silicon around the cap when fitting. I never fitted a raised air intake as it only makes you braver or stupid, can never make up my mind which! and it would run at bonnet height for long enough to do the job with the odd error when it comes over the bonnet briefly. If you want to run deep get a submarine!

I'm not too fussed about deep water! It's just now and again, I go in a big group and it's a case of when everybody else has done it

I'm just trying to get peoples opinions with V8's so I don't buy one and it cuts out the first time I take it near water, the missus has been sat in cold water upto her waste before when I didn't have a snorkel, I've been threatened with divorce :(

    I still want a V8 ;)

  11. Thanks... plenty of reading there.

I considered using ms on an escort rs turbo a couple of years ago but didn't in the end. Getting rid of the dizzy on a V8 imo would be good, although expensive if you compare to a tdi. I will have read, cheers.

  12. Calling all V8 owners who use their disco's in water.

I've got a 300 tdi at the moment and would love a V8 on gas... the only thing that's restraining me is I use my disco at a few playdays which usually entails going through deep water, last time the bow wave was level with the bonnet.

I've heard of people waterproofing the dizzy's on V8's with rubber gloves and allsorts... Does this work? The missus would not be impressed if my disco cut out mid wade, especially if it was deep

Obviously I would fit a snorkel, just wondering what people have done and does it work?

    Dave (tdi owner - wanting a V8  )

  13. The central locking still doesn't work when I use the key in the drivers door and I've checked the fuses. It started by working intermitent for a while then stopped.

It's only normally the dogs im climbing over :)

My back can't take much more :(

  14. The central locking has packed up on my 97 300tdi. I thought it was the fob but I put a new battery in it and had it checked at a garage and they say its ok. But couldn't shed any light on my central locking!

It's a real pain in the arse, the key only fits the drivers door :(

Is there a box/unit that controls the central locking under the dash thats a swop with a new one?

Any ideas? climbing allover the interior to open doors is killing my back :(

  15. Thank's for reply's.

Right, I've been offroad today @ Kirton and had maximum articulation (See pic)... Before I went I was convinced I NEEDED an extended arch kit. Now, I'm not convinced. Refering to the pic again I had minimal rubbing, not enough to warrant an arch kit anyway.

I was going to put an extended arch kit on plus wheel spacers, I'm now going to trim a smidge more of the rear arches and save myseld 300 quid  Them flexi arches kits way too exspensive for what they are.

  16. I've put some 265/75 insa turbo's on my 5door disco, I've done the camel cut and been off road in it once. Obviously I need to take more off. I've ordered some flexi wheel arches, there on there way. I'm getting the grinder out before tomorrows outing but don't want to take too much/not enough off.

Is there a line on the body work you follow? or a measurement?

Apologies if it's been covered, just after some tips.

  17. I recenty fitted 265/75/16's to my disco, insa turbo special tracks.

Here's a few pics, i had to do lots of trimming and it still needs more...

I did tong @ bradford on my current setup and I had the most extreme articulation I could hope for, they didn't catch much. Where they caught I will take off.

I'm in the process of doing an extended arch conversion, if I wern't I would just take off where they caught.
