  1. Ah, ok thanks, hopefully thats it then? I wiped the oil of it, ran it up for a while then had another look, and it looks like it leaks from where the pump casing meet, which don t look repairable! any idea how much they cost??

    Hi

    happened to me

  2. Anyone know if it is possible for oil to be leaking from the brake vaccuum pump situated on the RHS of the block on a 300 tdi engine. It seems to be coming from the casing of the pump not the actual mating surface of the block where the gasket is???

thought oil was leaking from rocker cover but done that and not sure now???

    any ideas appreciated ,thanks

  3. just looked at my 110, seemsthe captive nuts are actually part of the bulkhead & should be visible from inside once the dash instrument pack has been removed & the wiring eased to give access.

from the engine bay side it looks like this ---

on the parts diagram, it doesn't show the top nuts, so I'm fairly surethey areasabove statement ^^^^^

nice one western, thats the photo i was gonna take!! i have taken some of the dash out, i will now do the rest and try and expose the little bhlighters!!

    cheers

  4. If it's on the engine side of the bulkhead I think I know the ones you're on about. The only thing I can suggest is to try an jam/wedge something under the edge of the rivnut to try and stop the spinning motion. If that fails, and it bothered me that much I'd take the column out completely by drilling/cutting off the ofending bolt and renewing the rivnut.Alot of work and a few other ways to try before hand. I've just changed the column on my 90 and it's a pig of a job :(

Walfy, yeah it is the engine side. if i manage to get the bolt out, i'm assuming the rivnut will need to be replaced/secured from spinning, is there any way to do this??

  5. Try removing the column switch covers & have a look it might be possible to get a spanner on the offending nut.

western, no nut to be seen! it seems the captive nut is inside the box section of the bulkhead! i will take some pics tomorrow, as i dont think i have explained it very well!

    cheers

  6. Help, anyone with a bright idea!!

i noticed the steering column seemed a bit loose, side to side movement from the steering wheel, anyway turns out when the previous wner replaced the bulkhead he didnt do all the bolts up that secure the top part of the steering column to the bulkhead. one of the bolts ( there are four in total) screws into a captive nut in the bulkhead, the bolt will not tighten because the capive nut is spinning. i dont know how to get it out and more importantly how i'm going to get a good fixing here

anyone come across a problem like this??????

    cheers Rob

  7. dont know where to start. Bought my defender 200 tdi about 4 months ago. Noticed there was no air filter so promptly fitted one. about a month later oil started leaking out of intercooler pipes. I noticed an oil catch tank in the engine bay(not plumbed in) asked the bloke about it and he told me it wasnt needed as a recon turbo, head and new breather had been fitted. so i hoped he had just forgotten to clean out the intercooler. i did this and all the pipes thoroughly. about a month later same problem. a boost gauge is fitted and its running up to 0.8 bar. Smoke screw seems to have been correctly adjusted as i get black smoke on full throttle. I really want to get this engine sorted cos it drives really well. incidently when you take off oil filler cap there seems to be a fair bit of pressure, same at the dipstick.

    help appreciated

    cheers

Technically I suppose you could say this is very bad but in the real world it is quite normal........ there is no supposed to be oil in there but it gets there anyway.

Have you got any oil in the aur filter assembly as well?

The oil will either be getting into the intercooler via the turbo itself ( worn bearings ) or it could be coming from the breather off the crankcase going into the airfilter and passing through the whole turbo / intercooler plumbing.

Unless you have a lot ( like runny oil rather than black sooty muck ) then do not be too worried. As it starts to get more start to worry more and when it is actually dripping out of the joints in the intercooler plumbing it is time to cry :D

Hope that has put your mind at rest rather than sent you into a flurry of woe!
