  1. I’ve recently come into possession of an expedition trailer built on a Mk3 FV2381 Reynolds Boughton (Sankey) Widetrack chassis.

It needs new brake discs and although there is lots of vague information online about it using Ford brake components- including ‘Scorpio’ discs, I can’t find a definitive source that says whether these are front or rear discs or what model year.

I’ve managed to get the correct pads through matching the Mintex part number MDB1287.

Grateful if anyone has any good information they can post here to help me and others in future.

I’ve already found the army AESP which is available here:

  2. Thanks again all. Just to round this thread off:

I purchased the handheld tacho as suggested. Very simple operation: just attach some of the supplied reflective tape to the crank pulley and shine the laser pointer at it. Initial idle speed was approx 700 which according to Western's photo above is too low for a Defender 200tdi (never knew there was a difference between Disco and Defender).

Idle speed adjusted up using the thumb-wheel on the throttle cable as it enters the fuel injection pump to 790rpm and the EMS-3 needs to be calibrated at 14.7 pulses per revolution to read correctly.

  3. Grateful is anyone knows about the output pulses from a 200tdi A127-45 alternator that can help me.

I've installed a Madman EMS3 engine monitor, which can function as a tachometer. I have connected it to the W terminal on the alternator and it is reading but needs calibrating- there are calibration settings in the menu of the EMS3 but I need to know how many pulses per revolution to set in order to get the correct read out on the rev counter... Any ideas?

Here's the manual for the device: https://www.madmandevelopments.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/03/EMS3-v1_04.pdf

    Thanks in advance knowledgeable people

  4. Thanks everyone,

I've found the very rusty original calipers from the 90 that are indeed 41.6mm.   I was toying with the idea of rebuilding them as I enjoy that sort of thing but just doesn't make economic sense when you add up price of rebuild kits, paint, vented spacers, new bolts etc.

I'll go for a pair of new SEB500460 and SEB500470 as suggested by Mossberg. They're listed as defender fitment, are the later wider piston diameter and are single feed. Will roll the dice on them having the same bolt spacing to attach to the hubs- I can't believe Land Rover would have varied these? Point taken though around thread pitch.

Thanks all- I'll update the thread when I eventually get round to the swap

  5. Many years ago I swapped the front axle on my 90 (originally 1987 2.5NA) for one off a Discovery 1 which was in much better condition and which had vented discs/calipers.  The only installation difference I recall was that the Discovery calipers had two brake fluid input lines which meant I had to put a T-splitter on each side to double up the Defender's single brake line connections.

Now, those front calipers could use a refresh/rebuild/replacement and I'm keen to return to the single brake line input system to eliminate the T-splitters which have always seemed like a bit of a bodge (even if they have worked fine for nearly 2 decades).

I presume that I will need to install Defender vented calipers? Are the Defender caliper bolt patterns compatible with the Disco axle (and all other RR/Defender front axles for that matter?) ie will any vented front caliper from any of the three models fit?

    Thanks!

  6. Can someone remind me where I would find the rear wiper relay in a 300tdi 90 please? Is it behind the instrument cluster?

I presume it’s failed as the rear wiper has  started coming on as soon as the ignition is turned on? It stays on regardless of the position of the centre rotary switch and even if all the wires are removed from the back of the switch?

  7. I’ve just installed genuine puma rear folding seats in my 90- using the wheel arch modification panels from YRM.

The installation went well except that on one seat the side fold mechanism isn’t working. I can see that there is a cable that controls this folding mechanism and that it has broken or come off. Does anyone have a link to either a parts diagram for the seats or a supplier of spare parts/part numbers in case I need to replace the cable?

  8. The trailers are long gone. Everything GKN/Sankey-based was replaced by penman trailers. Rapier as a missile system is due out of service in a couple of years as western has posted but the Rapier trailers were for the original towed launchers (Field Standard B) that went out of service over 15 years ago (replaced by the FS C model)

  9. Hi,

I just bought a genuine defender headliner, front and rear, to install in my D reg 90.  This vehicle originally only had a front headliner (I believe there was never an option for a rear headlining for van-bodied vehicles without alpine windows?). I'll be installing it without any of the other rear trim pieces window surrounds etc.

Anyhow, my question relates to what fixings or brackets are needed to secure the headlining? The front section uses the rear view mirror and sun-visors but what about the rear?

Above the rear door, newer defenders have twin grab handles that fix through the headlining, what are these attached to? Nut plates? Can these be bought as a separate part The two interior lights - do the backing plates with studs fix to the metal roof and have a role in retaining the headlining?

Any advice, pictures and part numbers would be appreciated.
