  1. Hi There, A new poster here so please go easy ! Just in the process of looking for a replacement vehicle and have started giving serious consideration to a Freelander. We have not got bucketloads to spend and are looking at a second hand vehicle up to about £4K. Internet searches have come up with a good number of possibilities and I am encouraged to see how many older vehicles seem to be available and (now that I am looking out for them) seem to be still on the roads. My preference would be a TD4 engined Freelander, am I right in thinking this is a BMW unit ? Alternatively there are a number of cars for sale locally, at a good price, with the 1.8 XEi engine - I have read a number of reports stating that this engine has a habit of blowing head gaskets and that it has a tendency to be a bit thirsty in terms of fuel consumption - Can any forum users give me any feedback on this ? We are currently running two small hatchbacks (Fabia and old Polo) and are therefore accustomed to cheap levels of annual servicing. Could anyone give me a rough ballpark figure of what the maintenance costs of a 1999-2002 aged vehicle would cost per year ? I appreciate this is a very vague question but am hoping someone on here might be able to offer me the value of their experience. Your help and guidance are very much appreciated.
