  1. so i found a small problem with my 200tdi, the crankshaft moves back and forth by quite a large amount.

i dont have a dial gauge, but i measured it with a ruler to be just under 1mm. i'm guessing this is a bit too much, as the book reckons about 0.25mm maximum

is it possible to change the thrust bearings that control the endfloat without removing the engine?

The crank is not snaped as it i had a 200tdi and the pully had some right movment on it when i striped it it had snapped about an inch and half from the end

  2. hi, since doing the head gasket, timing belt, diesel pump and clutch on my 1992 200tdi 90, after driving for a while if i boot it in 4th, 5th and sometimes 3rd it loses power and graudually dies and settles untill it reaches 35-40 and sometimes when i slow down it will misfire and i find it hard to pull away again, i took out the air filter as it looked manky but no difference.

i was thinking mayby lift pump or blocked pipe as filter is new.

the engine is a disco one with a 90 timing case if that for some reason would make a difference

    any help appreciated

    cheers, ethan

I had sort of the same problem and mine was because the diesel pump timming was out a little.

  3. I think it's time to change my offside cv joint :( . I've the obligatory "clicking" on left full lock for some time,

and today after a trip to the tip I've got a squeel when turning right, from the ofside front........I think.

Is the squeel another sign of a knackered cv or something else ?

How do I tell which cv I have ? or is it just a case of taking it off and having a look ?

Where's the best place to get a replacement cv, quality/price wise ?

While it's apart, is it worth changing anything else ?

Any special tools required, and any awkward bits to watch out for ?

It's an '87 90, was a 2.5D but changed to a 3.5 RRC 4 spd auto, don't know if the previous owner changed

the axles as well, or would they be similar reagrding the parts I require ?

Sorry for all the Q's, but want to get it right

    Thanks, Jon

It should be an AEU2522 if the last owner did not change the axle, the way i did it was to find the axle number its on the left hand side on the top of the axle near the the brether pipe,I did mine the other day to say i have never done one it was walk int the park took about an hour and half

  4. As already stated, if your axle is original, then you will probably have AEU2522 which is 23 spline on the inner cage and slightly longer than other CV Joints.

However this is "probably" as land rover did not conform to any particular year or model. so the only way to be sure is take it out or check the axle number.

    Steve

IT's a good CV and the strongest of the standard land rover genuine parts ones.

Mods can now close please cv joint has been replaced thanks every one for the help

  5. on the upper face of the longer axle tube, above the horizontal weld line near the breather pipe connections, have a damp rag, good strong light source & wire brush to hand, as they can be hard to find, the serial number should be stamped in to the metal.

cheers mate will have a crack at the in the morning

  6. hello people i have a Defender 90 1984 what as been rebuilt using an early 200tdi defender, and i am having trouble finding which cv joint kit and halfshaft i need as they seem to go on chassis number i do not have time to take to bits to find which on it is so is there another way of finding out

    cheers
