  1. Hi Have just replaced the engine in my 300TDI discovery. last night on taking it for a run to the MOT centre may rev counter and batt warning light kept coming on. Carried out a few checks out side the garage but was after any pointers for when I get it home tonight. With the previous engine (alternator came with replacement engine so this has been changed) I was always getting the rev counter stopping to work and on a couple of occasions had the bat light flicker on. With replacement engine and alternator neither brand new and multi meter on batt I can see the alternator is not charging. Tightening the charge cable nothing but when moving the warning light cable this appeared to make it start charging, so tightened this. All was ok but again when taking for quick drive problem still there. I don't think it is the alternator as I had similar issue with old one. Going to look at crimp connections on the three cables tonight. If I remove all cables to the alternator put my meter between the alternator and the neg on the batt with the engine running this should prove the alternator? Have also notice from reading the Haynes manual that there should be a suppressor on the alternator which I do not have, but would expect this to only effect the rev counter. Any suggestions on what to look for would be appreciated. thanks peter
  2. Hi Have just swapped over the engine in my N reg 300TDI. All seemed to be going well, new engine started. But when I try and put it into gear it will not engage. Does not make any grating nose and when you push it does rock the car forward or backward depending on gear. With engine stopped I can get the car into gear. Had no issue with clutch system before engine went, although obviously the new engine came with it's used clutch but was told there we no known issues with this. When I changed the engine i did change the clutch fork (as was told these are a week point) And removed and refitted the clutch plate (checking to see how warn it was before fitting engine) I have tried bleeding the clutch in the hope that this may help but it did not. I assume that I have messed up the connection of the clutch fork. Was wondering if anyone had any other thoughts before I went through the hassle of removing the engine again
  3. I over heated my engine a few weeks ago. I now have a new engine to replace it with but two parts have been melted and i can not find in the Haynes manual what they are. This pipe comes across the bulkhead, behind the top of the engine (thin black pipe). Comes from the left arrowed and connects to a larger black pipe the other end goes behind the screen wash tank. Arrow in middle of shot showed where it is melted but this is hanging down lower then it normally would be. This apears to be a sensor on the engine head with some cables attached (or melted in my case) Can not say where these go, they head towards the bulkhead then down behine the engine (old engine not coming out till next wekend) In the Haynes manual it just shows this as anouther bold in the head from the pickture. If anyone could help me out on what these are and what I need to get to fix then? Getting and engine hoist next weekend so could do with getting any parts by then thanks for any help you can offer
