  1. So yes, you keep using it my mate, especially up in my area. Keeps our lads in work!

    I don't use Red and never will. I'm just trying to find out if there is a sure fire way of removing all traces from the jerry cans as I don't want the White Derv that I am going to store in them to get contaminated.

    I have slopped some petrol around in them and left it overnight. Nothing mucky came out (no rust or mud) so I guesss they are good to go now?

    I have a couple of green, ex MOD, 20L jerry cans that a farmer friend gave me. I intend to paint them black and fill them with derv for the defender but the only problem is that they have had red derv in them.

    Does anyone know the best way to clean them out? I want to fill them with normal derv to use as extra fuel storage and don't want it contaminated by the residue of the red derv.

  3. Great. I will get some MTF94 and see how it goes.

    I have been out and tried double clutching into second but it makes no difference so I guess it will be the synchro that's knackered.

    Looking at the worst, if it is the gear, does that mean a new box or just a new second gear? And is it a easy job of do I need to start saving for a real mechanic?

  4. Hi all

    I have a problem with 2nd gear in my td5 defender (manual). It's been like it since I purchased it (that will teach me to trust an ebay seller and not test drive!) and now I want to get it sorted out.

    When I change to 2nd the gear grinds. It will go in if I give it a push or if in slow down to around 7mph. All other gears are fine and nice and smooth.

    Any ideas on what I should look at first?

    How do I get to the fuel pump - Have heard that you need to cut a hole in the rear floor but only seen measurements for a 90 - mines a 110

    Ok. So I measured 36cm from the galv door strip on the back edge of the tub and 28cm from the left side wheel arch. Mine is a 20cm x 20cm hole.

    You will have to cut through a strengthening beam. Once I had finished, I bolted a section of 1x1" angle across the beam and created a flap for the hole.

  6. Could be the in tank fuel pump. The same thing happened to mine a few months back.

    When you turn the ignition on, before you start the engine, you should hear a faint wining noise. That's the in tank pump. If you cant hear it or it's very loud then it may be dead/on its way out.

    Could also be oil in the injector loom. To check for that go into the seat box below the drivers seat and pull off the plug that is connected to the ecu (orange one i think). Check for signs of oil.

    I am in the market for my first welder. I intend to teach myself so I need a simple set that will be easy to use.

    Can someone point me in the right direction and recommend a good starter set?
