I have a 7 year old Defender TD5 which has recently developed an electrics fault.
A couple of weeks ago I noticed the radio going silent for brief periods (2 seconds or so) with all the dials going to zero. This was followed by the engine cutting out. On this first occasion the engine restarted without problem.
Last Friday, after 350 miles, the same chain of events occured. However, this time electricity did not come back. Everything apart from the alarm lost power. Battery and alternator are fine. This unfortunately happened at busy traffic lights during the rush hour in central London. The AA came out and accessed wiring around the stearing column but were unable to locate the fault. The vehicle remained 'dead' for 30 minutes. Then, for no apparent reason, the electicity started to flow again.
The AA followed me to my local LR dealership (one cut-out on the way - restarted spontaneously). The vehicle has been with them for a week but they have been unable to locate any fault.
Does this ring any bells for anyone? I am due to set off on a 6 week journey through France and desperately need to resolve this. Everything can cut out at any time ....
