  1. Ive had my V6 Sport since 06 (its an 04) and yes, the fuel consumption is awfull- I cant get to Cornwall on a tank from Maidstone- a journey of 300 miles for me - I always have to top up just south of Plymouth. However, I find the performance more than acceptable on acceleration and a nice smooth run on the gearbox in all rev-ranges. Ive only done 29k in all that time, so Im happy to keep it for a bit more. I ballance that against HGF on a 1.8 K series- maintenance costs are low. I believe the cam-belts on the V6 are good for 60k- so Im half way there yet. Id be careful making an engine-swap, If thats what you were considering.

the engine is good on mine, cambelts have been done and its a new rebuild on the engine, i was considering swapping the whole car, not the engine but after consideration the economy isnt massively different, from people ive spoke to recently, i really like the car but at £1.30 a litre and climbing its getting difficult to warrant the expense, unusual for me as im normally a firm believer of....when it runs out, fill it up again.....but the frequency seems to be getting serious.

Looks like i will be keeping it after all and will persevere with the cost.

    Neil.

  2. 1.8's get around 27-30mpg and from what I've heard are not really any slower than the V6. I certainly liked mine.

thanks for that, ive never been impressed by the power on the v6 but i am hugely unimpressed by the consumption...it really devours fuel likes its free!!!!

  3. Hi all,

I am running a 2.5 v6 and wondered if anyone knows how drastic the fuel consumption is between that and a standard 1.8i.

As prices for fuel soar i am considering swapping, i dont need the extra power so a 1.8 would be fine but if the consumption is not much different (though i suspect it is)then there is no point changing.

    many thanks

  4. hi there

Its the brake light switch above the brake pedal thats the issue. Had same issue on my TD4 sport. Occassionally lights would come when braking then stay on for 5 -10 mins. Its about £20 from LR. Its the switch and modification loom wire.

    Hope this helps

    Regards

    Nick

    Hi Nick,

Thanks, thats a great help...I'll get that sorted as it sounds simple enough.

    regards

    Neil.

  5. hi all....

i apologise if this has been covered and i suspect it has, (i have tried searching but cant find anything, i imagine im not typing in the right parameters).

i have a 2001 v6 and it has been fine, last day or two the TC and HDC amber lights have come on together occassionaly when braking. at first I assumed it was genuinely the TC notifying me it was operating (due to snow and ice)but with the HDC on as well i wondered if there is an issue.

any information would be greatly received

    many thanks

    Neil

  6. Hard to fit?

Depends on whether you have the relevant brackets on the axles and chassis to fit them.

If you have the brackets and the parts no not at all

Your have to pick them up second hand as new ones are stupid price.

Does your 90 really lean at really alarming angles?

Like I said...Im starting to think its just me as most people think its ok, only one other person has ever really commented on it but it seems a big lean to me.

No brackets etc so ARB may not be the way forward.

Possibly polybush could be a solution....thats been advised several times, only thing putting me off is the actual extraction of the old bush.

Does anybody know if there is one of those idiots guide to polybush replacement on here somewhere...with pics as a preference???

  7. de Carbons were put on last year, whole set up was done at the same time so its not done any serious stuff, bit of off raoding earlier this year for the Mac 4x4 but nothing strenuous....im thinking its just my view on the set up and its probably fine, I just dont like the way it leans on bends and roundabouts but I also think some of it is the lift.

Forgive my ignorance but are the ARB's front and rear???

    Hard to fit???

  8. Thanks for that,

Ive thought about the Poly bush side and spoke to quite a few people about it and never seem to to get a definitive answer, some say its a big difference and others say its the springs....I was hoping it was the springs as its lots cheaper to put right and I can change the springs, i will have to have the garage do the bushes.

thanks for your advice though, it might be the way forward after all.

  9. Hi All

I am permanently unhappy about my springs on my 90.

I had a 2" lift done when I replaced all my springs and shocks (about July time last year and only done around 1500 miles since) and since then have never been happy about the roll that has come with it.

Originally the springs were Bearmach (Blue) 2" lift springs but I then upgraded the rears to Terrafirma Heavy Duty 2" lift, but im still not happy about it.

I am considering reverting back to standard ride height but with firmer springs. I went out in a friends 90 and it didnt seem to move at all round the bends, stayed completely stable.

    So...the question...

Is there such a thing as heavy duty / firm standard height springs for front and rear of a defender 90 and if so...where from?

    Thanks very much.

  10. thank you all, its how i thought but im glad i got confirmation.

im aware it will drive a bit pants but its just to see if different springs on the front stop me feeling like jonah inside his whale when cornering.

thank you all, i'll give it a go.

    (if it stops raining)

    neil.

  11. Hi all,

Can anybody give me a procedure for changing the front springs on my 90.

I have HD Terrafirmas on the rear and Bearmach blue springs on the front, I want to swap them round (just to see if it stops the wallowing on corners) and if so I will get some more HD ones.

I swapped the rears myself as they were easy enough but the fronts look a little more complicated..due to the shock absorbers, im sure its not as difficult as Im thinking it might be but hoped there might be a procedure available somewhere.

    many thanks

    Neil

  12. i have, they were going to call me back in 30 mins but didnt hear from them.

i need to worry about it a bit as I set off on the Mac 4x4 charity challenge with it at 5am tomorrow....time is pressing which is why they promised to get it done. Im sure it will be ok but with so little time left its making me nervous.

  13. Hi,

I decided to get a roof mount cargo net for my defender but my local garage want about £55 + Vat for it....i suppose its a proper Land Rover item but it seems pricey.

Mudstuff do one with all fixings for £27.50.....Half the price.

So the question has to be, is the expensive one a better option for a reason or is it the same thing as the mudstuff one but twice the price?

I just wondered if anybody had ever bought either of the items, althoughn im not sure what make the £55 one is, im only assuming its a Land Rover product by the price.

Or are they no use anyway???

    Many thanks

    Neil

  14. You're correct - the LR 'Genuine Parts' Spotlight Wiring Kit does come with a Relay.

    .

Yes it is a genuine loom with relay so I am thinking that I must have the two power feeds the wrong way round, will look in the morning when its light again...

Many thanks for all your help.....

sometimes it just dangerous trying things for yourself.....but the best way to learn.

    neil.

  15. Hi all,

Ive had a look about but cant find an answer....sure its simple but it appears.....so am I!!!!

Im wiring in my Land Rover spotlights with a Land Rover spotlight wiring kit. I have the power sorted, the earth sorted, the cables to the relevant lights sorted, I have attached the switch wire to the main beam feed for the headlight so they come on when I have main on or flash main.

All ok so I thought...but.....every time I use the main beam option it blows the fuse for that headlamp ( im just using the left headlamp main beam feed for the switch - as advised.

Please please tell me where Im going wrong....it seemed such a simple job.

Apologies if this is already on the forum somewhere.

    Neil.
