Found it! (can't really believe I overlooked it...) Fitted new solenoid plunger and contact points (bought via Ebay) yesterday and the intermittant starting problem seems to have disappeared. Many thanks for your help.

Would be grateful if someone could advise on the location of the starter motor on a Freelander 2.5 V6 2002. I am experiencing intermittant starting problems and have read that the most likely cause would be dirty contact points that either need to be cleaned or replaced. Thanks
