  1. Hi, I've not really been on here for ages... my Landy has been languishing on the driveway for many years, I just don't have the time or facilities to do a lot of the work required.

I'm looking for a garage/mechanic in Cheshire with good Landrover experience and fairly trustworthy.

    Can anyone help?

    Cheers,

    Dave.

  2. I know fuel is already expensive, but wouldn't it be better to put the tax on fuel to discourage un-necessary use of cars in general, rather than just taxing high CO2 cars more?

Sorry mate, I don't mean this as a personal attack, but you raise a point that irks me. People in this country need to understand that we ALREADY have a tax-as-you-drive system... it's called Fuel Duty and it's calculated on every litre you buy!!! If you drive more, you pay more tax... if you have a 'gas-guzzler' you pay more tax!!! (And likely get xmas cards off G.Brown and Family!)

Everywhere I read about fuel economy, taxation and 'green-ness' people suggest a system where you pay more if you use more fuel... IT'S ALREADY HERE!!! And more importantly, the tax is calculated as a percentage (unlike the USA where I believe tax on road fuel is fixed at something like 24 cents per gallon!!!) on top of the cost of fuel AND once they've added their 'duty' to the cost of fuel... they smack us with VAT on the bloomin' lot! So we pay tax... on the tax we're paying!!!!!

All of this is why G. Brown Esq. isn't exactly in a hurry to do anything about high fuel prices!!! He's currently hit the jackpot on the one-armed-road-fuel-duty Bandit and is scooping our hard-earned into his hat, pockets and any recepticle he can find to to dig himself out of the huge debt-whole he's spent the last ten years digging into!! :angry2:

p.s. Yes, I would have added more exclamation marks if I could have. :D

    p.p.s. I already carbon off-set the CO2 created by my 'gas-guzzler' ... do I get a road-fund-duty discount???

  3. Its your land rover trying to tell you that door tops are for sissies.

Or people who live in climates like wot Britain has

    British steel at its finest.

Hmm, British steel isn't the problem, it's the British weather :P

  4. Last minute, I got my engine together for a Series off road trip. The plan was 4 days, all off road, camping along the way. It was hot, but very fun. We had a few minor problems along the way, 1 broken halfshaft, 1 broken spring pack bolt which caused the front propshaft to separate several times until we found the cause, 1 broken shackle bolt and 1 bent rim, which application of a BFH soon fixed. We covered 150 miles of trail, mostly easy, but there were some challenging parts along the way. I have a ton of pics, so I won't post them here, but you can see them here if interested. We had a 86" Ser I, a Ser II 88", 2 IIA 88" and a IIA 109", and an LR owners son in a J**p.

Well, colour me ever so slightly green with envy... that looks like an awesome trip.

Though Blighty is blessed with an over abundance of Landrovers of all shapes and sizes... most of them (including mine) don't get to see scenery of that caliber!

  5. is this any good for whats been discussed?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Fujitsu-Siemens-Styl...1QQcmdZViewItem

The biggest problem with that unit is that it'll require a special pen to use on the screen, it won't recognise finger taps.

It has what is know as an 'active' digitiser, you need to look for a unit labelled as 'passive' digitiser or just 'touch'.

The previously mentioned Fujitsu Siemens LT P-600 are a favourite in the states with pilots but there are two different types of screens on them, one is better outdoors than the other, check with any sellers before buying.

  6. In case anyone wants to watch this and can't (no repeats/outside the UK etc) try here.

Also, respect to the (heavily) modified Hi-Lux... I second the opinion that it's such a damn shame the standard vehicle looks nothing remotely like it.

And Clarkson... gawd bless him, if he didn't exist ... you'd have to make him. He's such a tosser but facinating to watch! I spent half the show laughing my head off and half crouching behind the sofa while he did his utter best to totally destroy the Toyota!!! For a man who claims to love cars, he has no thought of mechanical sympathy at all.

  7. To copy your Internet Explorer bookmarks you just need to find the directory they are stored in...

Been a while since I've used Win 2000 but try c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Favourites

If that doesn't exist, try c:\Windows\Profiles\<username>\Favourites...

Or, just launch explorer, navigate to the C: drive, press F3 to search and tell it to search for "*.lnk" ... that should give you a list of all favourites on your machine.

    Or, there is this method.

  8. Jesus, I simply cannot believe the level of venonmous hatred spilled in the comments... do these people really believe we bought our 4x4's with the intent of killing children?

Who are all these people anyway... are they actually on our streets? If so, I fear more for society than for any child playing in a city street. I actually read on one American 'Green' website a comment from someone claiming that a 4x4 is a driven weapon and rather than waiting for me to kill him in an accident he would "f**king knife (me) first" ...

For the love of god, do these people not realise how completely insane they sound?

  9. Sent the following off on the Radio 1 Newsbeat page, be gobsmacked if I hear or read it on their site:

Well, if this gets published I will be amazed but here goes.

Yet again I am infuriated by BBC radios reporting of announcements such as this. According to the article on the BBC News website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6082690.stm) the legislation is pointed at less fuel-efficient vehicles. There is virtually no mention of 4x4's specifically, yet your reporting on Radio One seems to focus solely on 4-wheel drives.

This is blatant tabloid-ism! Under these schemes drivers of sports cars, some small cars and large luxury saloon cars are to be included also, yet where is the mention of the gas-guzzling people-carrier in your on-air reporting? Constantly 4x4's are singled out as though they are the sole cause of carbon emissions on the road. Official figures would dispute that strongly. The V8 Range Rover at £68,000 gets exactly the same miles-per-gallon and slightly lower CO2 emissions than the £68,000 BMW M5. The diesel version of the Range Rover travels 25% further on a gallon of fuel than the BMW, its carbon emissions are around 83% of the BMWs but time and time again the BBC single out the 4-wheel drive for criticism.

Personally I am in agreement that in large cities there should be a restriction on the number and types of vehicle allowed in on a daily basis. Somewhere like London has a better than average transport system, its inhabitants should be encouraged to take advantage of it and the government should be obliged to invest more in it. However, when it is presented in such a single-minded Greenpeace-pandering manner I must strongly object.

As a national news organisation you should be ashamed of your blatantly biased news reporting. If you feel you must dumb-down your news reporting to suit your intended target audience, do us all the favour and leave the reporting to organisations with more integrity.

Just realise how much I sound like my dad

  10. As someone has already pointed out, the legislation is actually pointed at cars that pollute more/use more fuel.

I think that is ok, after all, I spend f*ck all time in London so it could burn to the ground for all I care. What really, and I mean REALLY p*sses me off is how the BBC, YET AGAIN, single out 4x4's. As if the entire world would choke and die if we don't do anything about these awful cancer-causing, child molesting, bunny-rabbit slaughtering 4 wheel drives!!!!

I've fessed up before, I drive a Jeep... I like my Jeep... it returns, on average, 30mpg on my weekly journeys... that's about 3-4mpg less than my 2001 Mini Cooper did and about 6-7mpg MORE than my pals Nissan 350Z!!! The TDi/5 Disco and Defender owners on here reckon their trucks get about the same 28-30mpg... Where's the guzzling??? Additionally, I drive a hell of a lot slower and take a lot more care with my 4x4 than I did in my Mini, I've knocked about 25mph off my crusing speed  ... I realise I'm hurtling along in 2 tonnes of steel and I drive appropriately, not like some drivers you see sitting 3 inches off the bumper in front!!

You want to tax less fuel efficient cars (and I'm not even going to get into the argument about how we pay more tax on fuel anyway) then that's one thing... but when the news organisation that I pay the license fee for start victimising one particular type of vehicle!!!!!!!!

    GaaaaaaaHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! :angry::angry::angry::angry::angry:

  11. Funny light switches, the general lack of dashboard and barely comfortable seats are part of the Series Landrovers charm... at least that's what I'm told... :P

Power steering is nice, especially if you've been spoilt for years and you try to do a u-turn with 7.50's fitted.

As for reversing lights, easiest is just to fit a white lamp at the back with a manual switch, otherwise you'd need a switch fitted to the gearbox.

  12. One of the reasons I was considering the ex-mod is so I can get a soft-top with the half-doors. Saves me trawling sound Landrover shows ... there's too much temptation and too little money :D

One of the things that appeals to me about ex-mod 90's is the fact they are more or less (as much as any older-Landrover can be) standard. A lot of the early civvy 90's will have been "modified" by their previous owner so you're starting on an unknown platform.

My Series One for example needs three different Haynes manuals just to tell me what the engine, gearbox and suspension/drive train could be!

  13. As long as you have the motivation, and I think others will agree with me here, a series Landy is the ideal starter to gain mechanical skills.

I am somewhat in the same boat as yourself... I'm looking at possibly selling my daily driver 4x4, pick up a cheaper to run daily hack and a series or early 90 for 'fun'*

As has been advised here I'm tempted to go down the ex-mod 90 myself. This is based on the fact that it will do to start with, but later mods such as power steering, disc brakes and 200/300 tdi motors tend to be easier to implant.

But there is just something about a series 3 ... it was my first car afterall :D

    * i.e. Spending all my spare cash and free time on, making my knuckles bleed and helping me practice several swear-words.

p.s. Yes, the series one in my avatar is still in my posession, but the thought of getting it back on the road is a little overwhelming. I'm thinking of holding onto it for a later project.

  14. Thought the facilities at this years LRO show were good, toilets were always clean and plenty of showers available (at least where I was pitched).

Just a shame the show itself was a little lacking, imo.

Anyhoo... if Billing can get it's facilities up to those standards I'll be heading there next year.

  15. Who gives a ****. He's just a TV presenter. Why is this news?

    Log

Hmm, trying to think of a logical argument here... but can't get "F*** Off!" out of my head.

    Ok, here goes...

Richard Hammond seems a nice fella, he's one of the more entertaining characters on the telly and is a genuine Landy fan... so he's someone I can identify with.

And, because I'm a decent human being I can offer my sympathies to his wife and children during this difficult time, send them my best wishes and hope that Richard makes makes a speedy and complete recovery.

    Tosser.

  16. I could go on in a similar vein about CityLink (and I've a pet name for them too... any ideas what it is?) ... they seem to believe that the closest depot they have to me is in Stoke on Trent (approx 1hr 45min round trip) rather than the office near Chester (30 min round trip).

  17. I must admit, I'm on the "Well done, brilliant idea" side of the fence too. We, as 4x4 drivers, need to start playing organisations like Greenpeace and the Ramblers at their own game. They realised that headlines are all common people seem to care about so articles like "Evil 4x4's destroy worlds, maim children and b*gger sheep!" grab all the headlines while "No we don't!" doesn't carry much weight. :(

I've offset the running of my Jeep  with CarbonNeutral.com... one of the primary reasons I went with them was they provide a window sticker announcing the fact. Does this place do the same? If not, I'd see about getting some made as doing the deed is great but we need to start advertising.

Perhaps we should take the "if you can't beat them, join them" campaign? Get a load of stickers printed with "Do you realise that your sportscar burns more fuel and is more likely to be involved in a high-speed accident than my 4x4?" and start plastering them on Civic Type-R's, Mini Cooper-S and BMW M3's ? :P

No, wait... a sticker campaign being factually correct and telling the truth??? Nah, it'll never work

p.s. I agree with HFH too, it is a 'drop in the ocean' in terms of how much it helps the environment but it is a start as other have mentioned. Tiny acorns, starting with one drop etc etc...

p.p.s China is bad, very bad. But they do know this and they are actually trying to change.

  18. Another recommendation for Dell... but try to buy from the Outlet... much cheaper and same warranty etc.

Or, the Apple seems good, I love my iMac at home and wished I'd waited to buy a MacBook Pro. OSX is a wonderful OS and shortly there will be a version of OpenOffice (Microsoft Office clone) for (native) Mac OSX.

I didn't however wait for the Macbook Pro... in my impatience I bought an Acer Travelmate 8204... 2Ghz dual-core, 2 GB of ram, 120GB hard disk... and broke twice in two weeks... message boards are full of complaints about problems with graphics cards making weird buzzing noises, hardware failures and screen problems. Acer tech support are basically a service where they tell you to send it back - don't expect anything else. Although to be fair to them, both times my laptop has been away for repair it's been back within 5 working days though.

Meh, bit of rambling... basically, I'd buy the Apple if I wanted it to work, the Dell if I wanted it cheap and the Acer if I'd run out of loo roll.
