  1. Because the shaft wears, and just replacing the seal will mean it will leak again in very quick time -one reason why recon boxes are so shockingly poor in their lifespan, they don't bother replacing the shaft if they think they can get away with it.

I replaced the seal on the input shaft on my 1988 RRC with one from Zeus Engineering. This is a machined part with o-rings inside and out to provide the seal. These bear on a different place on the shaft and so avoid this problem. It was about £23 incl VAT & P&P but easy to fit and has done a great job of fixing my leak - it's 100% dry now and hads been for months. here is the page http://www.zeus.uk.com/land-rover.php

  2. If it's an alternator fed one then that's where I'd look, possible slipping belt or knackered brushes would be first thoughts. Dodgy connection to tacho would surely cause it to flick to zero? Any charging problems?

My 1988 3.5EFI sometimes has a slipping power steering belt and it's the power steering pump pulley which in turn drives the alternator belt - causes the same symptoms as you have.

  3. The car also reported on the dash that the key was in the ignition when it was locked up. Any ideas?

I think this is usually caused by stickiness in the ignition switch - try graphite lock lube. Do NOT use WD40 because that will attract dirt.

  4. I don't have a P38, but on my Subaru Impreza a faulty Tracker resulted in a drain of 330mA which would flatten the battery in 7 days. Normal drain on most cars should be <50mA.

560mA shouldn't flatten a healthy battery in hours, so it could be that the cells have been damaged.

  5. My RRC sometimes jumps out of low range when I go off-roading, but only if the low range knob is not pushed fully forward.

To avoid trouble, once I get the car moving in low range I keep pressure on the knob (oooh err missus) until I am sure that it is fully engaged.

  6. Is there any way to work out which tyres are wider than others other than literally measuring lots of different sets side by side?

Manufacturers' websites might give the answers?

  7. Thanks but would still love to see a pic of this elusive bracket so I know what I'm aiming for. I already have the mudflaps installed including the brackets which reinforce them (one to bottom of spare wheel well and other to similar area other side. )

Here's mine - and you can see where the bolt through the bracket has torn out a chunk of the flange at the bottom of the wing.

  8. Sounds like there could be a short from damaged insulation on the wiring somewhere.

I guess a good place to start would be where the wiring feeds through from the door frames into the doors, as this is the most obvious wear point.

    Good luck!
