If it's an alternator fed one then that's where I'd look, possible slipping belt or knackered brushes would be first thoughts. Dodgy connection to tacho would surely cause it to flick to zero? Any charging problems?
My 1988 3.5EFI sometimes has a slipping power steering belt and it's the power steering pump pulley which in turn drives the alternator belt - causes the same symptoms as you have.

The car also reported on the dash that the key was in the ignition when it was locked up. Any ideas?
I think this is usually caused by stickiness in the ignition switch - try graphite lock lube. Do NOT use WD40 because that will attract dirt.

I used these people for a lambda for my Subaru Impreza - www.lambdapower.co.uk
IIRC £90 for a Bosch part, same as the original unit, instead of £160 for one from a Subaru dealer.
Fast service too, and options to take a chance on a 'cheapy' unit without connector plugs, though I would avoid the bottom-end priced ones.
Mine unscrewed easily enough (on a 10 year-old exhaust).

They only work with the headlights on?

I don't have a P38, but on my Subaru Impreza a faulty Tracker resulted in a drain of 330mA which would flatten the battery in 7 days. Normal drain on most cars should be <50mA.
560mA shouldn't flatten a healthy battery in hours, so it could be that the cells have been damaged.

My RRC sometimes jumps out of low range when I go off-roading, but only if the low range knob is not pushed fully forward.
To avoid trouble, once I get the car moving in low range I keep pressure on the knob (oooh err missus) until I am sure that it is fully engaged.

i will just duct tape a silencer onto the y piece to get me to the exhaust shop.
Won't the tape just melt with the heat?

Is there any way to work out which tyres are wider than others other than literally measuring lots of different sets side by side?
Manufacturers' websites might give the answers?

be careful with any glass too, I ended up leaving tiny specks on my 90 windscreen when I cut out my footwell and I hadn't covered up stuff enough. V annoying!
Good advice - guess how I know!

Thanks but would still love to see a pic of this elusive bracket so I know what I'm aiming for. I already have the mudflaps installed including the brackets which reinforce them (one to bottom of spare wheel well and other to similar area other side. )
Here's mine - and you can see where the bolt through the bracket has torn out a chunk of the flange at the bottom of the wing.

might be item 8 here http://www.numcat.ru/landrover/p/38/48476/
Haha - I have just been out and taken a pic of the bracket on my 1988 4 door but it's the same as item 8 on the diagram - it bolts through the flange on the bottom of the wing.

This was discussed in a recent thread on another forum:-

It's all separate circuits coming back to common earth points, so having the back lights disconnected won't affect anything else.

appears to run well on idle and ticks over fine
Mine sometimes misfires on one cylinder and its not that obvious, though it causes a loss of power. Might be worth checking out the plugs and leads.

Will the engine start even if not everything is wired up?
Such as?
Pete

Sounds like there could be a short from damaged insulation on the wiring somewhere.
I guess a good place to start would be where the wiring feeds through from the door frames into the doors, as this is the most obvious wear point.
Good luck!

Only when you are driving? - or does it do it when the ignition is on but the engine is not running?
Is it road speed or engine speed related?

As before, great pics / thread.
Fingers crossed that it all runs sweet as a nut from now on.

According to Microcat, ESR 2585 was used on RRCs 1992 to 1995, and on Disco Series 1.

Steering box started leaking, best place to get reconditioned?

I replaced the seal on the input shaft on my 1988 RRC with one from Zeus Engineering. This is a machined part with o-rings inside and out to provide the seal. These bear on a different place on the shaft and so avoid this problem. It was about £23 incl VAT & P&P but easy to fit and has done a great job of fixing my leak - it's 100% dry now and hads been for months. here is the page http://www.zeus.uk.com/land-rover.php
