  1. After doing an oil change today, I noticed the front right spring, the bottom layer (7 layer leaf spring) leaf spring has snapped and shifted back an inch or 2 and the second smaller one up from that has broke too but not shifted much, a mm or 2, the 3rd one up quite bent and other 4 on it are fine. Not sure if I should risk driving it till I can get it fixed if it would hold ok =/. I think it was yesterday it was done when I hit a very bad pot hole I couldn't avoid due to car coming the other way. I can get a new pair but my dad who would help me get it sorted (I'm not too experienced with it) is going on hol on sunday and it's a big job to replace them. Not sure if I can get it done before that or have to wait another week to get some new one's fitted. Not sure if it would still be fine running it with 2 bottom broke springs and it being held with just 5 that are still intact or would it be too easy for it to bend and break the others if it has a shock again? Would those 5 hold it? 1956 86" Land Rover Series 1 with series 2 axels and springs 2.4L diesel. Many thanks for advice. Edit: Have got some spare leaf springs in the back but they are quite rusty and corroded most of them, will try and take one apart and replace the single broken springs and see how it goes.
  2. Ah right. I did try NFU but they wouldn't insure young drivers unless they had business connections which I don't. Going to go ahead with Adrian Flux. Had it running today, started up first time in ages perfect, and runs well. Ready to go in for an M.O.T, needs Oil change, Top bulk head is rusting really bad that will need some repair work. Fit an Auto fan engine cooler to it in case I don't see its overheating and don't turn the cooler fan on manually (doubt I wouldn't forget but just in case) Then good to go.
  3. Haven't done Pass Plus and don't really fancy doing it. Yeah it is a bit rusty, but it hasn't been cleaned up for a couple of years, needs a good seeing to. Not too experienced with mechanics and it looks like would be a big job (even though I would get me dad to do it and help me if it were to be replaced) think it will do how it is though. Going to get her running tonight and drive it up and down drive see how is does.
  4. Insurance for young drivers is very expensive now =/ But I found I very good quote from Adrian Flux - 1,600 I think that's the best I'm gonna get.
  5. Thanks guys, Yeah will get a land rover magazine and have a look in there, I'm sure my dad has a lot laying around.
  6. Hi there guys, I am very new to the forum and signed up to ask for help and advice. I am 19 years old, passed my test April this year, and for a car my dad is going to "lend" me his 1956 86" 2.4L diesel series 1 motor which he built just over 15 years ago. All of the comparison sites etc. only allow me to select 88" 1961 as the earliest land rover. I am guessing this is because I will need 'classic car insurance'. Am I able to get insurance through classic car insurance with me being a young driver? And what places would you recommend? There is Adrian Flux and Sureterm I know of and will ring up tomorrow but haven't had time to ring today due to work and would like to ask here first. Here is a picture of the beauty: http://i225.photobucket.com/albums/dd299/lowrider181/04062010107.jpg It hasn't been on the road for 2 years but only needs a good clean inside and out. Appreciate your help
