  1. 5 wheel silver paint from halfords does the job for ~£7.

Sprayed my 24 yr old set and grille about 7 years ago, still look great. They are not exactly difficult to get off to do it properly. The wheel paint has been on the wheels >12 years and only just started coming off, it is tougher than other spray cans.

  2. Well, a friend rebuilt a 110 a few years back.

    Galv chassis

    New doors

    New paint

    Exchange gearbox

    New wheels/tyres

    New shock/springs

    So many small bits........

It all adds up and came to ~£9000 in the end

    + base vehicle

    + hundreds of hours labour

It was nice but a long way short of a "new" vehicle.

My estimate £15000-£18000 and you get a vehicle that still has >100000 miles on the major components.

  3. On mine there's a relay assembly that lights the brake warning light when the key is in the "engine crank" position to provide a bulb test facility.

After spending some time on it today trying to get it to work like a modern car (comes on in running position, goes off once started) I reread this and think it works as you describe. On only when cranking.

    I had two faults.

Sticky relay ( I only have two and a flasher ) swapped them over and it wouldn't start. "Percussed" the relay on 5 of the 6 sides and it is all fine now ;)

Excessive verdigris on the earth wire at the cap end. Had to cut off connector strip and clean up a new section and put a new connector on.

  4. I've had an mot failure. No big deal all do-able.

However, the seemingly easiest fix has me puzzled.

As above "Brake fluid warning light inoperative".

Now, rather obviously it wasn't going to be a bulb fault!

I "think" it is due to the main earth bolt in the engine bay no longer being earthed. It's probably melted to the gearbox/engine/exhaust or something.

I cannot find my manual with the wiring diagram. I haven't needed the manual for some time, either after 13 years of ownership I know how to fix the common faults by heart or I have a reliable 24 year old truck.

    The question is.

Is the light supposed to come on with ignition and go off once the engine is running or is it just a simple switch circuit?

  5. Ah, the marmite engine..............

At 120k you'll have to treat it as you would any other vehicle.

Could go bang tomorrow, could go on to 200k+

Pull the oil filler cap off while running ( at tickover) to see if it puffs like a steam train and check the air filter casing for oil.

This will tell you if it is pressurising the crankcase, but unless it is spewing oil out of the filler it is still no real gauge on longevity!

  6. Thats ridiculous-why would you pay that kind of money when you can get them much cheaper elsewhere!!

    Are you sure?

Pattern doors of the old Ali/box steel are ~ £325 each

    Door cards ~ £60 new

    Winders

    Glass

    Bits'n'bobs

I doubt you could build a pair of "new" old spec doors for less than £1000

I wouldn't describe them as cheap but you wouldn't get them from a breakers any cheaper

  7. I spent a morning following daihatsu fourtrack around slab common. It was doing some real bum clenching stuff, thought the guy driving had balls of steel. Only during lunch did we discover it had the best part of 100kg of water in each tyre.

  8. It seems to me that a lot of you have disabled the standard multi layer security in your obsession to "fix" your cars.

Dodgy hinges, the door needs to be lifted in order to open/shut

Smoke screen on start up reducing visibility for getaway.

Random, temporary electrical faults meaning any light can fail at any time giving the police the oportunity for a “pull”

Half a pint of water poured over right leg regardless of weather conditions when pulling up at first junction.

Brakes that pull heavily for the nearest ditch.

  9. We have 11(ish) acres of paddock, and since we've got it I have a lot more sympathy for landowners with byways on or adjacent to their land.

Even the quad at 350kg and low ground pressure leaves a lasting imprint. Drive the same route several times and it takes weeks to go.

Do it in the Landrover (on ATs) with some right foot and steering and it takes months to go!

I've no doubt that a a more agressive tire, even driven carefully with no spin, would rip chunks out of the paddocks.
