  1. Hi all,

We're in to do the Tay again this year but need another vehicle to team up with. We run a Disco Pickup with 82's front and rear , lockers and V8 auto. We;re looking for a similar spec vehicle as we're not planning to be hanging around.

We've just finished fourth in the 90 Degree.

    Cheers

    Dave

  2. the quality of all the teams this year was excellent and in our group it came down to seconds and sometimes a 10th of a second on some sections, so it was basicaly a bit of bad luck

we took some gambles that if they had paid of would of shaved quite alot of time but unfortunatley they failed.

we found we could not compete with the freespooling drums as on 1 single long pull out you have saved a good minute :(

but after all said and done i loved every minute and learnt alot :)

we managed fourth without a freespool. just got the rope out before we started!

  3. No there was no winching, to be honest in order to appeal to the broadest possible audience I would not envisage introducing any either.

We hope to organise a follow-up, just need to find the right date so as not to clash with anything else before we get into more inclement weather.

Looks like 18 Oct may be the only option

Date's good for me- count me in(really! not just one of those who says so and doesn't do)

  4. The smooth cam gear shattered on my 8274 a a local event last weekend.I am trying to dismantle the winch to see the condition of all the other parts, I can't seem to get the mainshaft out, is there a special way to do this?

    thank you

    Lester

Open the top of the winch and remove the retaining plate which also holds the drum in place and circlip on the brake shaft, the shaft should then pull out. failing that check

  5. Like most people on this forum, I use Plasma 12. Been using it for three years on every competition I've done. Snapped it once, at Tong in the SR trophy but that was due to me neglecting the rope rather than over loading it (didn't clean it enough).

IMHO if you buy any other it'll only cost you more when you realise it's naff and then go and buy Plasma

  6. I know most of the guys on here are from down south but hopefully there's some up north too. Plus there's not really much organised up here especially for novices.

    So here is the snippet from the website;

After you opened your presents on Christmas morning it’s all a bit boring until New Years Eve. So we’ve arranged in association with Need 4x4 to hold a novice/intermediate Challenge event on the 30th of December this year.

The Challenge is aimed at teams of two vehicles who are either fresh to the challenge scene or who have limited experience with a minimum of one winch per team. Teams must consist of two drivers and two co-drivers. Any vehicles/drivers who have competed in any major events such as Tay Forest Challenge, Muddy Truckers, Bulldog, etc will not be allowed to compete. Although it's a competition the emphasis is more on enjoying yourself and getting a buzz out of itm so give it a shot and you're guaranteed to enjoy it..

The event will consist of up to 40 punches placed around the site as well as possibly a few special stages thrown in for good measure. The punches will be indicated on a map at the start of the event and each punch identified by an individual number. A punch card will be attached to the vehicle by an event Marshal. This is where the visited punches will be collected, consequently the vehicle must get close enough to the punch to mark the card without removing either the card or the punch from their location.

Punches will be given varying value depending on the degree of difficulty. Special Stages may be on a time limit and points awarded according to the time taken. Each task will be monitored by a Marshal who will issue any instructions and record the results.

Cost per vehicle is £45 this includes the event fees and hot tea and coffee during the event (as it’s probably going to be a bit cold). Prizes will be awarded for the highest score in each class as well as some spot prizes.

A class system will be used as follows

Standard: Vehicles must be taxed for road use and may be equipped a maximum of one traction aid per vehicle e.g. a winch or a locking diff. If you have more aids than this class allows then you may disable them (proof required) to run in this class.

Modified: Vehicles must be taxed for road use and may be equipped with one or more of the following: Winches front & rear, Front and/or rear diff locks, Tyres larger than 32”

All vehicles must have current MOT test certificate, in addition all vehicles will be scrutineered before the event. They must also conform to the technical regulations.

Technical regulations and entry forms are available by e-mailing dave@cheviot4x4.com. Entry is by completing the entry form and sending £20 deposit to secure your place. There is a maximum of 20 teams & all entries must be received by the 20th December 2007.

    Each team must have

    a minimum of 1 winch,

a pair of winch gloves per person- these could be gardening gloves or mountain bike gloves as long as they protect your hands.

A winch sail per winch- minimum weight of 1kg.

Tow rope minimum 4.5 metres x 25mm or strop 4.5metres x 3 ton yellow. Two rated recovery shackles with a minimum S.W.L. of 3.25 tonnes.
