Hi The pressures down on cylinders 1 & 2, could that be valves? As its a 19J engine I am getting advised to chuck it and replace with a 200tdi but its coming out expensive, the 'chuffing' and 'tonking' sound comes from the air inlet.. sounds like a boat engine!! any further suggestions gratefully recieved.. (ps a visual check of tappets etc seems ok) ???

HI ALL Thanks for the information, had a look at the rockers, they look ok and bounce about but its difficult to tell, but I can smell unburnt fuel .. It runs really roughly - The engine is 19J I think and I have heard some have rather scary problems. (like cracks in the engine block) if it was that what would the effects be? Does anyone know what a strange puffing from the air inlet means, just got a land rover defender 90 seemed fine but now it's running unevenly, wouldn't tick over smoothly without adjusting idle up and strange to start, sounds like it slips before starting ! Have I blown something, the previous owner hardly ever drove it so it was standing parked up for months before I bought it, I have been using it daily and on motorway too. Any thoughts or advice gratefully received
