  1. Julian It's not a patten part but genuine landrover which is why i am supprised it came out, it did take a few hits to get it in but not "hefty thumps" as there is not room to get a good swing. I am considering giving the back (domed side) of the next one a few taps before i fit it to try and flare it out a bit more. Mouse.
  2. HI Pinn76 no i did not hit it in the centre as i had not been told to do that, I am a bit puzzled as to how this would help ???, I can see what you mean about the plug being domed but the centre is further in than the outer edge so I would have thought that if the centre was hit the effect would be to pull the edges closer to the centre. I can see how this would work if the centre stuck out but not the other way round, I am not dismissing your answer bit just having a problem getting my head around it. Jim what sort of sealent would you use and the plug was flush with block, the other plugs do sit about 2mm deeper but i did not want to push the depth of the new one in case i tipped it to one side . Thanks Mouse.
  3. Hi there Last week I noticed that my Disco 200tdi had lost coolent and after much hunting around and the use of some u.v dye the leak was traced to a core plug above the starter motor. First I tried some barrs as a emergency measure which did not do anything so I got some new ones from Landrover, I also asked them if i needed any sealent around the edge when the new ones where put in and was told no they have to be put in dry so that is what i did. After fitting and tapping into place with a large socket i went for a drive and got 4 miles before the temp started to climb, when i looked under the bonnet the new plug was gone and so was most of my water. I have got some more plugs but now I am getting contradictory advice from landrover what to do, one person insists they go in dry, another says use blue hylomar and another says that because the engines are painted when new and then the plugs are put in i should paint around the inner lip before the plug is fitted. Strangely enough no-one has mentioned stud or bearing lock. Any suggestions please as i am worried that with so many options I will chose the wrong one and be back to square one. Thank you Mouse.
  4. Thank you for the reply and the links. They made interesting reading but at the moment i will try to make/adapt a air supply of my own using what i have learnt over the past few days. If i have any success i will post back on here. Mouse.
  5. Hi and thanks for the replies Very interested in the comments about air-con compressors as i have air -con on my disco but not sure if i could use it to fill a tank, is it possible to Tee of it in some way or can I have to have only one, I.E air-con or air horn ??? and if I can use it to power both i assume that when i use the air-con that the tank will be "blowing off" all the time as the compressor will be constantly running. Will have to check out receivers from RRC's as this would save me a lot of hassle as the fittings should already be there,I wonder if i could use the compressor from one as well ??. mickeyw can you tell me if you have working air-con or does your compressor just fill the tank, anymore details would be most helpful. The hornblasters link was a "blast" but I cannot justify spending that amount of money at the moment. thanks again. Mouse.
  6. Hi there I have air-horns on my 200tdi Disco and to be honest the loudness is pants, they are supposed to be 117 DBL but I don't think they are anywhere near that. Originally i had two trumpets powered by one electric compressor and to try to make them louder i fitted another compressor and now run one comp to one horn and it has not made a difference. I know that i need a greater psi as the compressor's that I have only put out 15 psi but if i use a garage airline the sound is great. What i am thinking of doing is to use a small vehicle fire extinguisher (about 600 grams) to use as a air tank and a cheepo tire inflater to fill the tank, I would have two valves fitted to the tank, one as a blow off valve and the other electrically operated and connected to the horn switch. I think that i could have the tire inflater wired to the ignition as it would only need to run when the horn has been used. Does this make sense as i am fed up having a horn that sounds like a gay noddy car. Thank you Mouse.
  7. Thank you, just what i needed. It turned out that the shaft was incorrectly assembled in more ways than one. Mouse.
  8. Hi all Can anybody help me out with a diagram of the rocker shaft for a 200tdi Discovery. What i need to know is where the thin and thick spacers fit in relation to the springs and caps as i think that when i had the headgasket replaced the shaft was incorectly fitted. My local landrover dealer has tried to e-mail me a diagram several times but for some reason it has not turned up and i have no way to get there. Thanks in advance Mouse.
  9. Cheers for the replys and the link. The good news IT'S OUT , after calming down and reading what redneck said I got a small very sharp chisel the same diamater as the bolt and made two marks, one horizontal and one vertical with the idea that this would give me a exact centre to centre pop and drill. Luckey for me it seemed to loosen the bolt and i was able to use the chisel as a screwdriver and wind it out. The next shock came when i called Landrover for some new bolts and was quoted just over £9 each for the bolts, luckely enough a local breakers had a 200 in that i got all 5 from for a fiver. Thanks Mouse.
  10. Hi there Today while replacing the rocker shaft in my 200tdi Disco I got confused between N.M & FT/LB and snapped one of the bolts off flush. I have not had a lot of luck with easy outs in the past as the drill bit always seems to wander of centre so i was wondering if any of you have any other ideas ???. As the bolt is quite tight at 32 FT/LB I was wondering about useing some heat as the bolt is steel and it is into ally which will expand quicker. Any ideas please Mouse.
  11. Thanks for the reply, makes me feel a lot better. Not sure what you mean about "rotator caps" do you mean the small cups that fit over the end of the valve stems between the stems and the rocker pads ??, if so they are all o.k. Thanks Mouse.
  12. Hi there A few days ago my Discovery 200tdi started to make a slight tapping sound from the engine and after turning it off it would not start again. After investigatng i found out that the plastic ridged surround on the cam belt tentioner had disintergrated causing the belt to slip and rip some of the teath off the belt and also bend all of the push rods. The belt, tentioner, and idler have all been replaced and i am now waiting for the new pushrods to arrive but i am concerned that there might have been some damage to the top's of the pistons, is this possable and can i check this without removing the head ???. When i turn the engine over by hand there is quite a bit of compression there but i do not have a propper compression tester to find out exactly how much. What i am most worried about is that a valve has hit the top of a piston and caused a weak spot that will fail later on. Thanks in advance. Mouse.
