A blown head gasket would give a continuous ‘tick-tick-tick...’. that increases when engine is under load. This noise is not continuous and sounds metallic.
Suggest taking the rocker cover off and start with a thorough inspection of the rockers and valve springs.
Have you tried using a sounding stick to try pinpoint the source?
Bill
Had the rockershaft out checked the little caps on the valve springs, removed and checked the pushrods for damage or bends and redid the tappets again no big gaps no rough running.. Next thing I'm trying is remove the vac pump and blank it off (just to try it) and changing the lift pump did try a stethoscope that's how I came to thinking the injector was at fault.

Driving my land rover home the other day/month and noticed a light ticking sounded top end so I took it home and parked it up for a bit got round to doing a oil change and checked the tappets. All the tappets where equal slightly small but all even, nothing nasty came out the sump on the oil change. Drove it up the road and the light tapping changed to a horrible noise see first video.
talked to a few people who suggested vac pump so changed that. This is the video after..
Had a listen with a stethoscope and sounded really like number 3 injector so it's a while since having any new or reconditioned so put a new set in this is the video after doing that.. haven't got any further just after suggestions.
Oil pressures good no excessive smoke no miss fires and cold start is spot on
Any ideas? Thanks

I had nothing but trouble with my drum brake changed to x-eng disc never looked back

Dead simple get a test lamp find the feed on the relay block from the dipped beam cicuit and link it to the dipped beam output (blue and red i think) then should be all good (i think i'm right not 100%sure its about 4 years since i last dumped one of these relays) either way you have to link two wires. cheers

Can you still use a gkn overdrive on an auto box? and is there any point? also how sluggish do they become? Thanks.

working on a 300tdi the other day and the boost vacuum pipe went to the fuel pump like normal and also the timing case and no wading bung hole in the cover?
-
sorry meant to say it was vaccuuming on mine took the cap of and you could see the diesel disappeering back down the filler neck!if the engine is pulling fuel out of the tank then shouldnt it be creating a vacume rather than pressurising the tank? surley the ball in the cap is only to let air in and thats why it has a spring behind it?
-
the mot is a complete waste of time i had a vehicle that the brake pipe burst during the brake test you couldn't fail it beacause the brake pipe was behind a cover so you couldn't see it and that could have been life threatning!!
-
i had the same problem new caps didn't sort it so in the end i extended the breather on the filler neck all the way up to the snorkel never had a problem since all good
-
brilliant thanks guys!!
-
i would replace them for peace of mind but it shouldn't have failed its mot the book says if you (the tester) thinks that the sidewalls are corroded over 50% of the original thickness then you can fail it if you are not sure you pass and advise...
-
can these all be done without removing the timing belt housing? thanks..
-
Just doing a timing belt on 300tdi 130 wolf and there's oil in the bottom of the timing case any idea which seal it might be? and rough time to change?
-
T work we just had a transit in with the same engine and it had put a rocker through the side of the cam casing!! been told its a common fault the annoying thing is you have to have the full head assembly!

hi there, was just wondering what the point was in the salisbury axles on a 110?
i know its heavier duty than the standard axle, but range rovers had normal axles and they weighed more didn't they?
just wondered really..
CURLY
and as of TD5 they all had rover rear axle's so confusing...

ok i run a 300tdi and have recently put it on rolling road for the 2nd time with a big gap and a few mods inbetween now i have drove loads of standard 300 tdi's and in comparison mine wipes the floor with them on the last run it was around 107 bhp and 287lbft of torque at 2100rpm now it's 103 bhp and 243lb ft at 3000rpm ?? how do i get my torque lower again and higher?? mods wise it has had the pump and turbo tweaked by J E Engineering it runs a gas flowed head, twisted performance exhaust, allisport full width intercooler it starts and runs like a good un good compressions etc..
-
I asked my insurance company what they wanted for my 300 tdi conversion they said a copy of the reciept from the garage was ok,after i had the uprated intercooler and disco transfer box fitted the insurance co. told me they wanted the brake's converted from drums on the back to disc's and vented on the front not got aproblem with any of that..
