  1. Not been her for a while but as the series111 project is on again i feel it may be more regular . My problem is i am now refitting the body panels which was going well front wings no problem tub no problem ( or so i thought ) then offered the doors up and the shut lines and door top levels are about 1 inch out . After much adjustment its now only about half but the problem seams to be the tub, it is fixed on the rear x member and sits sweet up to the seat box yet in the middle its about an inch away from the chassis . When i striped her down all seamed well but i have been at it around 3 years now so im wondering if the chassis has bowed or perhaps the tub which was lent against a wall ? im lost baffeld and completly stuck so please offer any pointers or solutions many thanks

  2. Assuming negative earth for the vehicle.

The battery will be earthed to the chassis and or engine. The Low tension ignition circuit will be battery + to coil (+ terminal), coil (-) to distributor - then the distributor is earthed in turn to the engine - return to battery by earth strap. Offhand I can't be sure if the coil body should be earthed - it normally is by its mountings onto the bulkhead - its only for HT purposes so if its loose then resting it on metal will probably do. If its mounted normally on the bulkhead and the engine AND chassis are earthed (as normal) you can forget this point.

A switch somewhere is a good idea so you can turn the thing off.

If you have an alternator it MUST not run without a load - it will destroy itself. Either connect it properly or take the belt off. A dynamo shouldn't come to any harm if the control box is functioning properly.

Are the points opening to a proper gap?

not got to setting the correct gap on the points yet but they are opening

  3. hi everyone so the 1975 series 111 petrol engine has been striped restored and now refited done all the lubricants ect and turned her over plugless and all seams well my question is though how can i just fire her up. As i am yet to rewire the ignition and stuff. obviously i have a battery installed but cant get a spark from the coil (the big one bolted to the bulk head) do i need to run any tempory connections or is this pointing to a knackerd coil also due to my lack of a wiring loom i am also arching out the solinoid to turn her over any help much appriciated cheers

  4. still not decided yet but am seriously considering which of the above to do After 2 or 3 years of slow but concice restoration i am just not finding enough time now to complete the series 111 project .It would make a lovely resto project for someone as most of the horible work is done unfortunatly though i think she is worth more and easier to shift as parts :( anyway if there is anyone out there who would like to purchase the series to complete the job please please let me know other wise she may become an ebay whore. basicly shes a 1975 bronze green swb lots of history very straight all parts there and much restoration already done and she was a runner before the strip down

  8. Been rebuilding a 1972 S3. When I stripped it down I took numerous photos to help with the rebuild. Computer fault means I've lost the photos. Wondering if someone in the Hertford/Ware area would mind me having a look at their vehicle to refresh the old memory about what went where.

    Thanks in anticipation.

got plenty although mine is 1975 much the same let me know if i can help they may not be what you need but can but try

  9. I'm kind of in shock.... after rebuilding my Land Rover I was thinking I would need special insurance, that it would be expensive, that if I wanted an agreed value, they would rip me off.

Well after reading the latest threads about insurance on here and that many people were being charged through the nose, I thought I'd start ringing the suggested insurers.

First one on the list was Footman James...

So to back track a little, I am 25, had my license for 7 years.. No claims or convictions. I live in a smallish town in Wiltshire and park the car on my driveway...

I have now taken out fully comp cover with them (the first I rang), with unlimited milage, Third party cover on other cars, agreed £9000 value, legal cover, breakdown cover, euro cover, and all mods listed...

    £135.52

Daylight robbery (but the good kind)

dont know your uses for the vehicle but worth checkin your insured off road too. recently insured my range rover and adrain flux was one of the only ones who covered it off road and as the wife uses it for pony club ect i recon its worth being insured in a field full of women trying to reverse horse boxes .the defender is also insured through adrain flux giving cover green laning and when we are pay and playin

  10. Yeah, I'd say something like Wurth is your best bet. It will give a more uniform finish than hot-dip, so it won't look 100% right, but it will provide some protection (just not as much as re-hot-dipping).

How bad are they? If they were painted over, it's possible you can just strip off the paint and buff them up with a scotch-brite pad.

    Jeff

to be honest there pretty good just gone a bit of a rusty orange colour in places
