  1. I have replaced a seal cost £15and worked a treat, take the box out, leave the arm on until you have it on the bench in a vice, it easier to get off then. Not a difficult job if you have the right tools, big socket. big lever/breaker bar, pullers, joint seperater.

If the shaft is pitted by rust its time to swap the box.

  2. Did I read that the military were running their Landies on aviation fuel in Iraq?

It is reportedly free, gratis, from the good old US of A.

Aviation fuel is basically parraffin, (kerosene if you speak American) my Disco runs fine on Esso Blue with 2 ltrs of cheap oil per tank full. Problem is I have to make sure its all gone before I leave the private pay and play site and go back on road.

The problem with veg oil is that when it gets cold it gets thick, when it gets thick the pump cant handle it and breaks. The problem of "set" veg oil in the pump and filter is covered elswhere.

Now if anyone has tried veg oil mixed with aviation fuel (tax free by the way) plus a slug of methanol let me know how it goes, preferably after completing say, 50k without trouble.

Closing thought, a Jumbo jet burns 4 ton of fuel on a trip over to the USA, its all tax free, and costs about 38pence a litre. Not fair is it? (You can get commercial white spirit at about 40 p a litre in 50 gallon drums, (I know they are in ltrs but I never converted fully).

  3. If its done loads of miles, over say, 100K its probably worn out, bearings slip rings brushes, etc, all wear out.

A full recon will cost about £50, and it will last a lot longer. But not if you keep dipping it in mud klike the one in your picci :-)

  4. the coil on a 8 cyl works twice as hard as one on say, a 4 cylinder. The coil is just a crude transformer, the electrical field collapses when the points open and this "induces" a voltage in the secondary (high voltage) winding. If a balast is fitted it is usually a 6v coil, but when the starter is operated and battery voltage drops to , say 8v on a cold morning, the balast is bypassed and the coil gets about 8v, thats OK because its only for the short time required to start the engine.

So, check the voltages at the coil across + and - and see what you have.

If the coil gets very hot (and they do get quite hot, thats why they put them in an airflow) by which I mean to hot to hold your hand on, somethings not right.

Also check HT leads, or better still throw them away and buy some expensive silicone ones, Make sure they are the right ones, nearly righ wont do!

    Good luck Geoff
