Well what should have been a fairly simple job of changing the exhaust manifold gasket turned into the normal 9 hours and two sheared bolts later that you'd expect from a 23 year old land rover. Its a 1984 110 CSW V8 and the manifold has started blowing on the off side (RH manifold). Out comes the parts manual, ok no gasket, but iv got a mate at the dealership so had a spare one any way. when i finally get the bugger off (it has the heat air transfer box cast into the side of the RH Manifold) it turns out it already has gaskets on it. No probs, that would be from when the head was skimmed. Both faces were smooth and unpitted and i used a tripple layer gasket with lots of sealant. copper greased the bolts and put it all back together again. Left it to dry for a bit, nope still blowing. Called it a night at this stage as i was knackered and cold (doing all this on my driveway ).
Iv tried to do it properly, now i feel its time to bodge it. Its blowing out of the back of the manifold, so right up by the bulkhead. Its got lots of sealant and a new gasket. The faces are true and smooth and theres no cracks in the manifold. Im unsure of the torque settings (if anyone knows that would be usefull) as its an ally head so iv done the bolts up as tight as i felt was possible without damage. Any ideas? In the past on other vehicles iv used thick copper gaskets, are these available for the rover V8?
Thanks
