  1. Have you replaced one before ,Are they easy to replace and how .Not much to ask everthing will help

Done them on other cars but not a freelander. Another pair of hands comes in handy to hold the shaft. On most you have to fiddle with a pair of circlip pliers or couple of small screwdrivers whils tapping the bck of the cv joint flange with a soft mallet to knock it off the shaft.

Extra pair of hands to hold the shaft firm prevents it from flirting out the other end.

  2. Notice many members have put the town/city in which they live but couldnt find if it was possible to do a search of members local to oneself.

Might be nice to know if thers someone around the corner with a freelander who fancied the idea of helping each other when needed. Lashings of beer in gratitude of course.

As these appear to have more than their share of problems it could be a good way of making new friends with a shared interest.

I'm in Stoke on Trent if anyone fancies a cuppa and mines running without fault at the moment (fingers crossed)

  3. Touch wood my 1.8 petrol is still running fine after 9 days of ownership. All electrics work well and only compaint I have is that it does seem very heavy on petrol comapared to my 1.4 rover which ive been using for the last 4 yrs.

Time will tell if I keep it or go back to my old faithful which is resting in my drive.

Most second hand freelanders over 50,000 miles will probably have had the head gasket done already and if you can get a receipt for this and a new cambelt change your laughing.

Think the cambelt change isnt too dificult for the average diy enthusiast anyway.

  4. Having just bought my freelander I would like to check the oil levels in the IRD, Final Drive, & Gearbox.

I will heve to lie under the car with it jacked up to do this and bearing in mind they may all use different oils that I will need to buy would it be cheaper to take it to a Landrover agents to get them topped up?

  5. Just done the timing belt on a 1.8 for a friend. The pulley marks were very slightly out before we took the old one off and are off exact alignment with the new one (less than 1 tooth so can't be taken out by moving belt). Past experience on other engines was to crack the pulley bolts and re-align the camshafts. Not mention of this in Haynes manual. Is near enough good enough?

    Rich

I had this on my rover 1.4 engine and it appeared impossible to align them spot on. My cars still fine today wiyh no tappet noise so must be right.

  6. Picked my 98 freelander up yesterday and took it for its first proper run this morning.

I'm pretty happy with it but also noticed the tyres are noisy. had a nice long stretch wher I cud open it up to 60 - 70 mph. Felt like my ears wanted to pop by the time I got back home. Is this normal on these? (pretty sure the bearings are ok and convinced its tyre noise).

  7. The misses has just bought a 98 xei and it dont sound good :( . The fella sold it cheap and told her a wheel bearing needs doing (among other things). Having driven it the rear certainly sounds like a trashed bearing and its vibrating a bit as well. One rear wheel has play in it so i'm fairly happy with the diagnosis. Now i've had a look through the forum and seen the kind of horrors it could also be i'm wondering if it was cheap enough !!!!!!

Ive just bought a 98 xei as well looks like we could be sharing notes  good luck

  8. If you join any forum you will always only hear the bad things and not the many thousands of happy freelander drivers.

People don't post "my cars grate it never lets me down" so it makes things look worse than they really are.

All cars are very much the same...

Land Rover's like to give there owners something to do at the week ends ;)

I'm sure your right Jules and actually knowing about all the problems hasnt put me off buying one. Its just given me a lot more knowledge about them than I had before I joined the forum.

My first job will be to remove the standard radio cassette player and fit my MP3 cd player. It was dead simple on my rover 200. Are there any pitfalls on the freelander to trip me up or is it straightforward?

  9. Hi to all on what looks like a great forum!

    I'm about to buy a 2001 Y TD4 ES 5 Door Freelander with 72k on the clock.

With all the probs reported on this forum I'm now bricking myself thinking it won't even get me home!

I have to drive it back from Bath to Cornwall - I know you guys have had as many joys as dilemmas when it comes to freelander ownership but am I making the right choice? I've gone from an uber reliable golf tdi. . . . . Am I in for a shock and should I upgrade my AA to recovery?

    Cheers

I pick my first freelander up on Saturday and yes i've updated my AA to recovery.

  10. Can anyone tell me when the cd multichangers were introduced and on which early models they were fitted as standard.

Also were they some attempt to turn the carp radio cassette players into cd players. Wouldnt it have been cheaper to just replace the radios with cd players?

Bit puzzled as to the mentality behind this one am I missing something?

  11. Looks like my camshaft cover has been kicked around the floor a few times presumably during some head gasket replacement in the past.

A lot of the paint is missing and it looks bad when the bonnets lifted. Can anyone reccommend a paint that can be used to spruce it up a bit?

  12. Local (very good) mechanic has quoted me under £200 to remove the old engine & fit the new one, probably take him about a day to do it. Frankly it's not worth getting cold & oily for that kinda money since at least £50 of that will be fluids and stuff anyway.

That sounds good enough. And cost of a second hand engine or reconditioned is? (nice to know incase mine needs one in the future)

  13. Everything smokes from cold on a cold morning, it's actually steam from water that's condensed in the exhaust system overnight.

You can tell steam from smoke by the way it disappears, smoke will hang about and probably smell too. As you rightly say, you can see most cars doing it on cold days. Once the exhaust is warmed up it will stop.

Smoke from cars will normally be blue (oil burning), black (over-fuelling), white steam (water seeping in somewhere). If it steams when it's warmed up then you want to be a little wary.

The usual checks for head gasket are:

    - Oil in the water

    - Water in the oil (it will go like mayonnaise)

    - Overheating

    - Greatly pressurising the cooling system (look for bulging / rock hard hoses)

If after a good run, and then being left to tick over while you chat with the owner, it doesn't get hot, lose water, or make any nasty noises you should be OK.

Good to hear thanks. Bit older than I wanted but a good intro into freelanders and 4x4s for me I hope. Left a deposit on it. Best colour they come in. Already got the nice silver alloy steps. Got roof bars and all the bells and whistles work.

Its off for its mot and will come with 6 months tax and a short warranty. Looks like my long search is over.

  14. Had a trial run yesterday in a freebie. Checked for all the points you lot had told me about and all seems fine. All electrics work and no knocks etc.

Did notice that from cold the exhaust was smoking a bit and it was white. I voiced my concerns about the head gasket and he assured me it didnt overheat and that they all smoke. Just then one passed us going the other way and it was smoking also.

It was a freezing cold morning and the temp gauge read normal when I got back although we wernt out that long. A couple of hours later I spotted another one smoking.

Am I worrying over nothing and do they all smoke a bit on cold mornings?

  15. Viewed a 1998 ® XEi Station Wagon today. It has air con and electric sunroof and mirrors but the seats were cloth.

Were these early ones made with cloth seats or have the leather been replaced for some reason? Cant think why they would remove the leather unless they were damaged.

  16. 2000/V Freelander 5 door XEDI, Champagne (?) metallic, ice-cold A/C, HD, towbar (unused), 81k miles, 12mths MOT, 11mths tax, FSH (inc recent cambelt), £3k

Went to see it last week and armed with all the advice from guys on here I checked everthing suggested and all seems OK so picked up today. The seller fixed a few issues it had, namely replaced the rear door window regulator and repaired the dent in the drivers door.

It appears to have a few Freelander foibles, i.e. slight uneven tyre wear on rears and boot safe is a bit moist (advice here would be appreciated) but in all I'm as happy as I could be.

The only thing I failed on was the roof aerial which I did not notice was missing so the radio reception is affected, it has an aftermarket Sony CD player so can I just get a standard roof-aerial from Halford for £12 or does it need to be a LR original ?

Cheers all for your advice prior to my purchase, hopefully I have a good'un. ;)

Can I ask if that was a private or trade sale?
