Managed to get down to the show on Sunday morning for a few hours. 1st LR show I have been too so difficult to judge against any of the others
Picked up a few bits and pieces, but was suprised at how many of the traders did nt have stuff for the TD5, and I don't think the stuff I was looking for was too extreme
i.e
I wanted a set of diff guards and nobody had them for the TD5, which is a pain as I have to order them and have them shipped to Dubai, was also looking for a service kit same story
Never mind though enjoyed the few hours that I was there
Good to catch up with Bruce on the Tomb Raider stand and to see so many TR's turn out for the show, they all looked clean and shiny compared to mine

You got THAT off TOP GEAR ???
What was the report on exactly...? (I can't get it any more... sniff ).
U gonna test it then? Sit it on a tarp and just float away! B)

You can download off the internet as long as you have a decent conx
Use someone like torrentspy etc

The wheel spacers will have slightly longer studs than normal and would work well with Dsico steels - allowing you to have a much better turning circle...
Don't go wider than 265 on the Disco steel though - in fact for shale/rock desert or scrub semi-desert, I would use a 235/85. There are only two options for serious desert use - Michelin or Hankook. The Hankook would be my choice due to cost and tread pattern - obviously an MT is out of the equation but the Hankook AT ia a bl**dy good trye pattern on sand/shale/rock/mud
The endless search for the perfect tyre. I currently run Yokohama Geolanders270/75/16's and to be honest they are a good compromise for on road/sand driving
BFG AT's seem to be the popular choice out here
As for size there seems to be 2 schools of thought, tall skinny tyres & fatter wider tyres. It would be nice to have the time and money to try all the different options
You have got me thinking know that I should opt for a skinnier tyre

I have just fitted some wheel spacers and used "loctite" on the nuts, no problems with nuts coming loose, not yet anyway
I did spend a while though making sure I cleaned the hubs and had a nice snug fit before tightening the nuts
-
Also got standard Disco steels on my (1989) 110. I've had no issues with tyres rubbing with either 265/75 or 235/85 as I've got a couple of sets. You may need to adjust the lock stops depending on the tyre size you run.
The wheels are quite thick steel - hence very strong. I've had no problem with the length of the studs - the end of the stud is flush with the wheelnuts when they are done up.

Matt

Cheers, going to probably end up with 265/75's on the rims, lets hope there's not a problem with the stud lenghs, may have to take off the wheel spacers I have just put on

I'll be there Sunday, not working on a stand but spending lots of cash
Then trying to get it all o/b the flight home Sunday night
-
I have perfomed a search but been unable to find anything
Someone has kindly donated a set of steels wheels from a D1
I know the offset is different, what will I have to do in order to fit them and stop them from rubbing ?Any other issues as well that I need to know about
Will only be used when I am out in the desert so I can go for a more biased sand tyre
Feel like I am always asking questions and not contributing, but with time and knowledge that will change

Hmmm I have seen this once before and I can't recall the fault (it was worse than yours, happening all the time) it either needed a new speedo head or a new sensor in the t/box, I think it was the latter.
Not a very helpful answer is it, a bit like saying "this axe is broken" - "it either needs a new handle, or a new head"
An answer is an answer no matter the content
Think I will wait and see what happens, you never know if I stick my head in the sand the problem might resolve itself
-
Hopefully this is just an electrical gremlin, it happend for the 3rd time today
Just as the engine has fired up the speedo travels all the round the clock and then settles back
Everything is working fine, just wondered if anyone else has experienced this
Usual start up procedure, wait for all lighst to go out etc before turning over
Cheers

My RAVE doesn't show anything in particular for the AC vehicles... it shows the AC blower motor, but not how to get "at it"...
i suspect it'll just be trial and errror and a lot of self tapping screws....
Cheers Jim, had another look tonight and your not wrong about the self tapping screws. Will have a go at it at the w/e and see what happens

Must be the aircon unit then, any tips ?
-
Before I start taking things to bits, any tips on removing the above, unit sits in the passenger footwell just below the dash
Need to take it out and have a look as its making rather a lot of noise
Cheers

After removing the EGR set up the noise temporarily stopped for about a week and I thought I had solved the problem, but it returned, so must have been coincidence that it stopped
Could nt figure out what it was, and after visits to numerous garages decided I would have to live with the noise
Put the old girl in for a service 2 days and got a phone call that my engine mounts needed replacing, as they were shot, not cheap either from the stealership here in Dubai, just under 200gbp
Anyway picker her up last night and the noise has finally gone

To add my tuppence worth I purchased a 182C from ebay for $450,brand new in a box, excellent bit of kit
Its a marine unit so its waterproof and you can add a memory card, nice size screen as well
-
Its been along time but I have finally got to the bottom of the strange noise and thought I'd just give you an update, as so many people gave advice
I finally narrowed the noise down to the EGR valve and ordered a blanking kit replacement
Just fitted it, noise has gone and throttle response has improved no end
Cheers

Considering putting lockers into my 90
Have been doing some research and came across this company
www.kamdiffs.com
Is anyone out there using this set up ?
Any advice appreciated
Cheers

Not to rub it in but we don't pay road tax here in Dubai
-
Finally got round to purchasing a GPS unit
I want to have a go at installing it myself this weekend
I will be mounting on the dash and want it permanently wired in
Are there any spare wires behind the dash that I could use ?It will be going into a 2001 TD5
Any other tips welcome
Cheers

Porny
Thanks for the reply, looks like the garage here knows less than me
Just had this part off the car and noticed there's large deposits of soot, which I assume is down to the low quality of the fuel over here
What's a good cleaner to "flush" these deposits from the engine
Appreciate any comments as I don't know a great deal about mechanics but am learning slowly

Does anyone have a part number for the above ?
Just had the car serviced and been told it needs replacing, 1 small problem contacted the local LR dealer here and they don't know what I am on about
Not suprising as they are not the sharpest tools in the box
Cheers

Staying out by Wilson airport somewhere

Twin Snorkels on a TD5
in Defender Forum (1983 - 2016)
Posted
I have been thinking about this for a while and don't know enough about airflow to know if it will work or be a waste of money
I already have a snorkel fitted and by its nature I am sure that it restricts air flow.
I originally fitted the snorkel becaues of all the dust and sand that you get whilst driving in the desert. It also gets very hot which means that the air is less dense than a colder climate, especially in the summer when it can reach 45+degrees
Thats my reasoning for the 2nd snorkel, has anyone done this or got any advice
Its probably worth adding I have a larger performance intercooler/chip/K&N airfilter
Thxs
