  1. Further to my last, in addition if i engage Park in the Gearbox, it does l(ooking at the transferbox) lock the gears in the transfer box although i can still turn the front prop by hand and the front wheels turn. With the vehicle in Drive i can rotate the front prop move which still drives the front wheels and the output shaft which wasnt rotating when i tried earlier with the engine running does turn from the transfer box end. by hand when the final drive gear is in place and being "driven" by my actions on the prop.
  2. High More checking today here goes! The rear Prop To Axle does not spin with the rear wheels on the ground the joint connecting rear prop to axle sows very limited play The front prop turns the elevated front wheels without problem altough there is some play here which must be where i get the gear take up clunk. With the engine running and vehicle in Drive the shaft which the transfer box input shaft and final gear connects to does not turn, it makes an effort at it ... then stops, with this in mind i an now guessing that although the transfer box has some play in it along with front axle that the fault is originating from somewhere within the autobox as the shaft that feeds the transfer box isnt moving in any gear. Thanks to all for your help so far.
  3. Hi As i have already taken the rear prop and handbrake etc off i cannot check for certain, however when i looked underneath when it went clunk for the final time i really dont recall seeing them spinning. I have looked a little further now and have found a lot of play in the gears which drive the front prop shaft and not the rearn (presumably the source of the "Clunking Through N to D and NtoR. I have left the final drive shaft out so gearbox is not connected to transfer box. to try and seperate and identify possible issues Would the excess play indicate a Transfer Box fault ? can this stop all drive?
  4. Hi . The vehicle can be pushed / towed whether in high low or neutral and even in park! the final drive gear and short drive piece seem to fit snugly with no play in them. Until that point the day to day driving and responce from the auto box was superb except for the clunk betwenn neutral and D or R. with the front wheels elevated you can turn the props and see the final drive gear and the short drive shaft all turning with the front wheels also moving, so i am guessing that the transfer box may be ok and that it is the shaft that connects to the short one that may be at fault, going to take a look under to see if that still rotates?
  5. Hi, i wonder if anyone is able to help me, i have a 1997 Discovery 1 3.9 V8 Automatic which has lost all drive both forwards and backwards. For the past few years it has had the tipical clunk between N&R and N&D etc .... I read on another thread that this could be the short mainshaft in the transfer box and associated gear, i have today removed these and the splines etc all seem in good order and all the teeth for the gears in the transfer box look fine. (the mainshaft hear is the cross drilled type) I am at a loss now as to where else to go with this fault, with the front of the vehicle off the round and the rear prop removed (to take the gear out) i can turn the prop housing and both ends and this rotates and the front wheels as well. Can anyone please give me any help as to whether there are any other areas i can check or if this is an expensive trip to the garage.... The Gearbox oil appears to be ok. The only thoughts that spring to mind currently are: Filter, Pump, Torque Converter. if anyone has any thoughts or tips i would really appreciate them. Regards Andy.
