  1. Hi just a quickie , whilst having a spare hour , as you do I found myself underneath the hood, having a tinker with my cooling system due to having an ongoing slight overheating problem under load, decided to remove and check the 3 way valve thingy which comes from the top of rad and top near thermo,

one of the pipes breaks off!!!!

as where i am will take a while to get a replacement, i decided to open up the valve to see how it works, and seems to me it just connects the three together basically ,

so as a temp measure , I made up a three way joint from 10 mm gas pipe fittings,

is this likely to work untill I get a replacement, or does the valve have a secret function i did not spot???

  2. Right then! first news from the Mechanic , is the head gasket , but on further investigation I got the good news that the head has gone, WOOHOO!!!

So now looking for a replacement head , saw on Paddocks site prices from 225 Quid to 310 quid, couldnt see what the difference was anyone got a clue or some advice!!

    cheers Wade.

  3. Tesco had some cheap funnels a little while ago which fitted perfectly into the expansion tank, allowing you to fill the system up with water above the level of the top of the engine. The header tank is actually below the top of the engine, which is the main reason why you can't bleed them easily. I opened the plastic bung on the thermostat housing a little and filled it up with the funnel attachment until the water came out of the thermostat housing while the engine was running. I also opened the bung on the rad and with revving and squeezing the pipework seemed to get the air out pretty easily.

In your situation however, eventually all the air should be pushed out anyway so if you are just getting loads of air out then perhaps there is another issue? With the engine running and getting hot, is there any hot air coming out of the blowers?

You didn't fit an MLS gasket did you? There is a love/hate thread on here about these gaskets. If not, did you fit a good quality gasket? Also, did you get your head checked? 300Tdi heads are well known for cracking, 200Tdi's are not quite as bad but still prone.

Appreciate all help , i have spent 3 days under the bonnet now (Ithink I need my head checking!!!!!), tried allsorts of methods , finally gave up and got it transported to a bunch of landrover lads down near Gibraltar, who incidentally are very helpful and know their stuff and are members of

check out the site even if for a bit of support, they organize offroad trips in southern spain, portugal and north africa, they also have access to parts ,mechanical help , and tons of experience,

thanks for all your help, Wade

  4. Check fluid level is about half way to 3/4 up the expansion tank, put cap on, turn heater to full demist hot, take a container with coolant with you, take for a short drive, round sharp corners up and down hill if possible, keeping an eye on the temp gauge, if it does the same as mine did, you will hear a gurgling/knocking noise from in the heater area , the temp gauge will suddenly rise and then fall, you will feel hot air blast from the heater, stop the car, carefully take of expansion cap and top up with coolant mix , replace cap , start up and all should be hunky dorey!

Worked for mine worth a go?!

right gonna nip out and try that now!!

  5. Hi, 300 tdi disco

I have tried all methods of bleeding the system ,

heater hose at back of the block,

connecting the heater hoses together to avoid poss matrix prob then bleeding,

running the car for long period with cap off ,

    squeezing hoses,

bleed valve at rad and thermo,

all as suggested in this topic,

Still as i type the car is outside ticking over now for about 2 hrs and a constant strem of bubbles are coming up thru the exp tank,

Heater is cold, no moisture at exhaust, no evidence of water in oil, and the water pump is in good cond, thermostat removed!,

    any ideas

    Wade

  6. So will the 3.9 v8 flange fit my300 tdi diff I.E. splines etc, also the gap between the diff face and handbrake drum is 10mm longer on the v8, but guess the prop will expand via greasing to make that up??, what is the point to the rubber coupling if its not fitted to all models??

    cheers for your response

    \Wade

    Anyone???
  7. You can fit a different propshaft with conventional flanges either end (200tdi discovery will definately fit) but you will have to change the flange on the diff. This thread may help :- Click Here

  8. Hi , I recently replaced the rubber donut between the rear prop and the input shaft to diff on my 300 tdi, but it has split again and causing a bit of vibration, I am about to go and measure the rear prop on my mates spare v8 disco with the hope that I may be able to do away with the rubber donut with al longer prop from the v8, is this possible ???, there is a little play in the input shaft which could be the cause of the donut deteriorating???

    any help please cheers guys!!

  9. Is there anything I can do to the Abs on my Disco, or Is there summut wrong with i

when descending a fairly steep track at low speed , Loosa stone rough surface, the ABS engages and makes it difficult to stop, a bit on the dangerous side , it has also happened when approaching a 't'junction on tarmac at low speed before and almost caused overshooting the junction,

can it be disconnected ,or is it a big job, I would be happier without it!!

  10. Hi , recently uprated suspension to a britpart HD normal ride height set of springs and shocks, Happy with it as it lifted the car by around 40mm, wether that was bcause the old setup was tired or not i dont know , anyway the ride is much better now but being a builder i do tend to carry a lot around with me , and finding the rear end could prob do with a bit more strength, its a bit bouncy when under load , I was hoping a differnt set of shocks on the rear would do the trick??, any suggestions , cant go to a lot of expense as there are many other things i need to do to the car ,

    cheers Wade

  11. Before anything, what do you mean by "loose"? Up and down or side to side (radial play), in and out (axial play) or is it rotational play? And roughly how much play?

Any significant oil leak behind the 3 bolt flange? Any abnormal whining from the rear at any road speed?

P.S. What year is your Discovery?

more radial than axial, prob about5to 10mm each way, and only a small leak, no whining apart from the occupant of the passenger seat occasionaly!!

    and its a 94 300tdi ES

  12. Hi guys ,

well got all my new toys today from paddocks,2 weeks delivered here from Uk, not bad considering present weather conditions,

Anyway Hd springs and gas shock , well chuffed with an unexpected 50 rise in height (prob due to the existing setup looking a bit tired!),

safari snorkel on and light guards all round, LOOKING GOOD!!!,

next was a new rubber coupling between the rear prop and diff flange,

Heres the question!! once the old coupling was off we found the flange(Inputshaft???) that goes in to the diff is quite loose, which prob explains a the clung taking up gear!!,

any ideas on rectifying this want some advice before i open the diff up!!

Will post some pics of new toys in next day or two.

    Cheers Wade

  13. Have to say the pics posted on this topic of the iveco massif, looked pretty cool, but for my after veiwing more photo examples of this car it definately is just clever photography,

  14. MTF is causing heaps of confusion and adamant correction from my spanish motor factors, that what I mean is ATF, obviously they have never heard of MTF even after searching on their Computer, so given that it looks like I will have to make do with ATF,

    thanks guys!!

By the way I am still struggling to convince my spanish neighbours and freinds (who are self appointed the best gardners on the planet !!)

that my LIME tree is not a LEMON tree and producing unripe mishapen LEMONS.

great people the Spaniards but damn stubborn!

  15. About a year ago I spotted a small inline mechanical plastic pump about the size of a packet of fags, which goes onto a regular electric drill in a plumbing supplier shop, had to buy it it was only a tenner , it is for draining pipes etc , inlet and outlet are about 13 mm dia, works a treat with my dewalt battery drill for gearbox refill!!, will post some pics!

  16. OK so i am all exited about my imminent delivery of Landrover goodies coming from the UkFor my disco1 300tdi Es ,one of which is a safari snorkel!, whilst ITV'ng(MOT'ng)my trailor yeaterday I asked one of the spanish inspectors about passing the ITV when i re-itv my disco next year with a snorkel on it??.

I am familiar with the ITV(MOT) system out here in that any extras on a vehicle such as bullbars, towbars etc, anything different from its manufacture spec has to be homologologologoized,

anyway the snorkel will need a piece of paperwork from a landrover dealer or authorized workshop, to say it has been fitted by them properly,

    which is a real shame,

If someone were a little bit clever they could probably ask another Landy owner who may have such a similar piece of paper , and use the said piece of paper as a template to create one for there vehicle, aparently there are programs on computers these days that makeit easy to change details on documents, thus helping out the fellow landy owner across the seas,

    Never mind!!

  17. hi i play around Elgrande and Coin in our 90 ,got a great run up the river bed .There is a guy breaking landrovers behind M&S at the back of Fengrolar (spelling ! ) to get to it of the main road down from malaga just drop of the dual carriage way (quite steep but ok if you dont you have to go miles around that new juction at marbera end)when you see Fengrolar and go under the road though the storm drain ,watch out for scooters as they use it for a short cut

    Regards

    Ray

    Nice!!,

Wehave a bit of fun in the Rio out towards Rio Grande and up to Coin ,and Tollox, plenty around to explore !!, what's your landy look like I prob seen it around coin /alhaurin,

    Wade

  18. Is there any land rover owners around southern Spain, Andalucia , that is interested in getting in touch, I have got 6 mates within a couple of miles that own landrovers (mainly Discos),

There are a couple of cars breking for spares, and between us have a fair knowledge of the cars, maybe there could be a club to be started up around here if there isn't one already,

get intouch if your interested or know of anything already going on.

    hasta luego!!!wade

  19. One button or two button?

Two button one will need to be programmed by a dealer so may as well get it from same...

Well i dont have the original so not sure if its supposed to be one or two, whats the difference, and will a one button do the job ?

    cheers
