  1. Hello everybody, my lift up handle type sunroof on my defender 90 leaks. (no news there then)

I have sealed all around the inside and outside of the frame with black sikaflex, replace the seal for a genuin land rovr one, tightened the scres on the hinges, put draught excluder foam on the glass to get rid of the bulgy gap effect in the centre of the glass, and still after a damp or frosty nite, it leaks in acroos the front part of the sunroof. When I hose it, it does not seem too bad, but yet the hinge area keeps dripping on my and the passengers lapa and this morning the inside of the front edge of the rubber was frozen up!!!

I have vaselined the seal too, but this was also no good.

I would like to able to use the sunroof but it looks increaisingly unlikely.

    Whats my best option?

can I change it for a twisty handle one?

    Whats the suggestions here

  2. Hi everybody and thanks for all the help with doing htis Mod.

I now have successfully completed it, using Retroanaconda's guide which I must say was superb!!!

Thanks everyone for the help, especially Retroanaconda.

I have not tried the new water temp sender yet, nor have I driven the car to check the speedo, but everything else works perfect as can be seen below.

    Thanks again

  3. I didn't mean yours, I was posting up a link to a Td5 dash I saw on eBay...but then I thought it was such a good deal I decided to buy it! Hence no longer relevant.

Your pics look good, make sure to take some more as you go along. It's always good to have reference photos of people's installs :)

Sorry if my previous post was mis-construed in any way.

    No problem!!!

    Thanks

  4. Ok. Thanks everyone for all that.

As for what wire colours are not the same, do I just refer to the diagrams or how best to know?

I am still a bit baffled (I am a stupid head sometimes)

Basically, I think that I swop warning panel plug wires like for like

I add a VDO rev counter and use a timing light to work out the revs

I get a td5 clocks loom and transducer out of a scrapper

I modify Td5 dash loom by a couple of pins to suit my Tdi

I buy a different water temp sender

    Is this all correct?

I am silly enough to need it spelled out in a step by step manner.

    Thanks for all the patience

    Alan

  5. Ok and thnaks.

This is all making loads of sense so far so thats good!!

Now I suppose I need a similar plug wiring diagram for the old white instrument cluster plugs to help me understand what wire to swop to the other new plug (that make sense?)

Finally, what wires are in the big grey loom plug and what do I connect those to?

    Alan

  6. This helps VERY much indeed!!!

Knowing which wire of the new multi plug on the LED warning panel to connect to which wire on the old warning panel is the bit that still baffles me!

The part number for the dash loom, pins for speedo plugs and the transducer would however be V HANDY if u can find them.

Similarly, how do I go about calibrating the rev counter avec timing light?

    Ta Much

  7. Hi there,

Sorry to be such a late comer to this thread but I have just won a Complete Td5 Binnacle and I have the 2 plugs off the LED cluster.

I have a 1994 UK 300Tdi and wish to get everything working, including a VDO rev counter, the illuminated heate controls, the speedo, the trip counter, the LED panel etc.

I think I will need to go to a scrappy and get the transducer, wiring plugs for the speedo, lights for the heater controls etc.

I have a td5 type rear tank installed and have used a disco 300Tdi Tank unit, so I want to check that I am right so far.

Change my exisiting warning cluster wired for the Td5 plugs (Is there instructions?)

Add in wires for the speedo etc

Use the Td5 fuel guage. (should work?)

Use the original 300Tdi temp guage (can I use the td5 one?)

Wire a sidelight feed to the heater controls for illumination

Install the Vdo tach out to the W terminal

How many wires do I need to run down to the gearbox and is there a sender present in anything other than a td5 defender?

What plugs do I need for the speedo?

    What is the wiring

    Is my theory correct?

Thanks so much to anyone that can help! My rebuild is starting to get out of hand

  8. Hi there.

Just been talking to Phil. Nice guy. Phoned him twice, once being at 9pm and he was still willing to help.

I do have a concern that maybe the gearstick / my hand will hit the console when changing gear. Is this the case?

Similarly, I think that covering the panels with some leather cloth might be a tactile / upmarket alternative to metal.

All in all though I think it seems to be a good product and that Phil seems extremely affable.

If someone could tell me if they have fitted it with aircon or if the gearstick hits it then great.

Finally, does the air coming in from the outside flaps get lost because of the console, and would I need to insulate the rear of it to kill noise?

  9. Hi there.

Dave from Southdown (the devon stuff you have seen) does not market a td5 90 solution due to his belief that the profile of every 90 tank mount is not exactly the same.

He WILL if you ask him very nicely make up the plate and weld his hitch to it for you which in turn will allow you to then weld the mounting brackes to the plate yourself.

It is a GREAT system which does not rattle about. I have it fitted on an old 200 disco off roader.

Alternatively, look at the scrapion racing type detachable bar which is on offer from extreme 4x4 and also available from OEC.

This uses a 2" receiver style hitch and can be fitted with anything that will fit in a 2" box section hole.

Good system with better ground clearance than southdown but probably more rattles.

Note though that this one is JUST A TOWBAR, NOT A TANKGUARD. You then would need to buy a seperate tankguard.

    No big deal.

My advice (if you can basic weld) would be to ring Dave at Southdown.
