  1. I have been trying to determine why the main battery on my Disco 2 TD5 is drained in less than a week when the vehicle is not used. I have a drain of about .6 amps. I removed and replaced fuses in the engine bay and when I removed the fuse no 8 the drain dropped to .005 amps. The fuse symbol on the fuse box is of a trailer. I assume this is the circuite for detecting when a trailer is conencted and activating the dash indicator light when useing the indicators. I do have a tow bar fitted so it is used and working correctly. What exactly does this circuit do, I also hear a Beep from the rear alarm sounder when putting the fuse back.

    Any ideas?

  2. I have started experiencing the following symptom with my td5 Disco Auto.

1 When starting in the morning it fires but does not idle and immediately dies. It requires a few tries which is very unusual With a bit of accelerator it will start and runs as normal after this. There is no smoke when starting.

2 Very bad lag when pulling off 4-5 seconds of low revs - I can see zero turbo pressure on the nanocom Tp reading. As soon as the turbo starts boosting it goes fine.

Any ideas where to start looking, I get no error codes from the Engine ECU.

  3. After inspection by a LR dealer the following came to light on a Diso TD5 engine.

The number 1 Cylinder (One closest to frontof vehicle ?) has failed. The edges and center are badley corroded and it has seemingly blown through at one side. LR dealer say this is due to overfueling on this cylinder. The other 4 Cylinders appear to be OK visually that is.

    Is this a plausable explanation.

  4. Hi

Can anyone PM me or post a list of the must have spares for overlanding with a TD5 Discovery with Air suspension.

I would like to know part Nos for all of the parts if possible and any extra parts to carry - eg plugs for air hoses for the suspension

    Things like

    Turbo Hoses

    Cooling hoses .....

Ths vehicle is well maintained but things to fail after the 140 000km mark.

  5. Top tip there from OEC ,

After having your manifold checked for straightness and maybee skimmed ,Loose the webs , They dont allow for expansion and cause the studs to shear off .

Always fit new studs even if they look ok , It piece of mind .

Thanks for the replies - It has now been sorted and all is well

  6. I have found the manifold on my Disco TD5 is warped and the end studs are snapped or pulled out. I have contact a repair center who will do the work of ensuring it is fixed and true agin. My only question is, do you replace only the affected studs or all of them as a matter of course?

  7. I posted this in the Discovery forum area and hd no response. Maybe this area is abetter location for it.

I have a Nanocom and would like to load a better fuel map for my Disco 2 TD5. I would like to load an improved fuel map to see if it is worth the effort on my vehicle. I someone contact off list or PM me some maps with a description of what they are supposed to do as far as performance improvements are concerned I would appreciate it.

I suspect mine may already be mapped but need some maps to compare. I would like to be able to load a few different maps and see which is better from an economy point of view etc.

  9. I find the pdfs on the manuf website quite clear. Did you read them?

    The examples you gave:

    - program a key -> page 4

HOW TO PROGRAM A NEW OR USED KEY

    1) Verify by means of the RF TEST function which slots are already used by the programmed keys available.

    2) Verify with the RF TEST function that the key that you are going to program is received but not programmed

    3) If you have the bar code, insert it by means of the KEY BAR CODE function; otherwise open the fob and read the 6 digit code printed on the label and program it by means of the KEY INNER CODE function

    4) Perform a SYNC KEY function verifying that the result is positive

    5) Verify that the new key’s fob opens and closes the doors, but remember to keep the other key out of the car with you, in order to avoid to close them in if the fob has problem.

    - calibrate air suspension -> page 3.

HOW TO SET AND CALIBRATE THE AIR SUSPENSIONS

If you need to replace a sensor or you want to modify the suspension heights, you have to follow the following procedure:

1 Set the car height with the RAISE LOWER functions

2 Verify with the SLS INPUT function that the values of the sensors are consistent

3 Perform the STORE HEIGHTS function once the height is set

4 Turn off the ignition for 60 seconds as Nanocom asks

5 Verify with the READ SETTING function that the stored height values correspond or are very closed to the values read with the SLS INPUT inputs

Are you looking for something more than that?

Thanks I have downloaded the aditional documents from their site now and will use them

  10. Thanks for the replies so far i will get the torque converter checked out,

Had my regular workshop have listen and they say it is the center box on the exhaust system that may be blocked and causing the now loud noise on acceleration. They have said a straight trough pipe can be fitted with little increase in noise. Does the diagnosis make sense.

  11. I have Nanocom and it is working well for diagnosing problems. However the manual is very limited as regards the application of the Nanocom. What i need is what the practical steps are to say program as key Fob or Calibrate an Air suspension system.

Is there a location where all the workshop procedures related to correcting error codes are document for use with these type of electronic tools. I do have Rave and it contains workshop procedures but lack some of the practical aspects of maintaining the electronic managed side of a TD5

Any suggestions of where to look will be appreciated

  12. If it is a mechanical noise rather than air escaping it sounds like something might be slipping in the autobox to me. I'd check the autobox oil level asap as low oil might not help. How many miles on the vehicle?

it seems to be mechanical - but it is difficult to diaganose as you cannot hear it when stationary. The vehicle has done 140000 Km. I have had a reduction in the effectiveness of the Aircon can they be related as the aircon becomes useless when the vehicle is hot and outsids temps are over 30 degrees.

In the last two weeks I have had the Aircon pully come of and damage fan and radiator which have both been replaced.

  13. I have noticed a steadily increasing noise from the Disco as I drive it.

It started as a slight whistle when accelerating and has now become a louder almost screech as you accelerate and more load is placed on the drive train. It is loader as the Auto box changes down gears and then almost disappears when final lock up occurs It dos not seem to be on the outlet manifold and does not appear when revving the engine at standstill, this may be because there is no load. The mechanic has checked all the turbo pipes and indicates they are OK.

What should I check first – as I suspect it may be somewhere in the drive train?

    Vehicle is Disco 2, TD5, AC,Ace

  14. You could look at this & see if it's worthwhile. The bloke who wrote it is ex (?) RAEME.

    Jack repairs

Dont just refill as it will leak again. Find someone in CT that can redoo the seals and refill the jack with the correct fluid. It can be done and is a lot cheaper than a new jack in SA

  15. Not mine but a question regarding the replacement of the Fuse box on the drivers side under the dash. The vehicle is a 03 TD5 with AC, SLS and ACE.

The old fuse box was damaged due to water ingress from the windshield. The fuse box was repalced with a used one from a 04 Disco and has the same part number.

After the replacement the vehicle is working but cannot be un/locked with the Key Remote amd can only be un/locked with the key itself.

    Any ideas anyone.

  16. I'ld like to boast a bit with my TD5 (and share what can be done with a TD5...)

Much as I like my 4.6 V8 D1, this truck puts my V8 to shame...

The turbo packed up recently and my garage offered me the option of fitting (so I'm told) a Variable Geometry turbo as fitted to a Merc Vito but modified so that the original boost pressure actuator would still control the VG turbo. The non-programmable ECU was replaced with a programmable ECU and mapped with the engine map of a Disco 2 TD5 auto, European spec. It also has a "UNICHIP" piggyback ECU that was mapped in the very early days, before the original ECU had even been programmed with the correct injector codes (as delivered NEW by the agents).

Boost comes in at 1250rpm (0.5 bar at steady speed). This means that I can now drive the car like I drive my V8, changing gears at 1800 - 2000rpm.

    max boost is now 1.4bar

max power at wheels: 96kW (assuming the braked dyno is reasonably correct; LR spec is 90Kw at the crank)

max torque at wheels: 340Nm (assuming the braked dyno is reasonably correct, LR spec is 300Nm at the crank)

max power remains almost flat up to 4000rpm whereas previously it dropped off quickly.

First comments I receive is normally: "Its gonna blow up...."

My view is that if that were to happen, it would have done so already. I recently towed a low-bed trailer (800Kg) with a Daimler Double-Six on top (2000Kg) over 500km with several mountain passes in between, trying to maintain 100Km/h on average.

The above has changed my rather negative view of the TD5 considerably.... I recon there is much more to be tapped from it.

How many Kms have you done with the vehicle since the change, it is very interesting and i assume that all the other plumbing in the engine compartment remained the same.

may I enquire how much it cost for the work.?
