  1. Hi There, On my 300tdi the alternator has a rectangular block with 3 nuts on it. Top is Red , main output, Middle is White, and the bottom is the grey. The spade is at about 7 O,clock on the very outer rim. I suspect it may be your spade has broken off, so you may have to put a new bit on the terminal.

    Good luck.

Thanks, I will have a look in daylight  i have seen the red block, then a green wire to the middle, grey block at the bottom and a spade connector just under the red box then there is just the grey wire left hanging.

    Thanks again Dean

  2. The terminal should be marked W.

Thanks for the reply, cannot find a terminal marked W.

What i have done is, cut off the connector that was damaged anyway and strip a bit of the wire, when i connect to the terminal with the thin brown wire attached with a small nut, the rev counter works but only when it is going straight to the threaded bit, i have tried trapping the wire between the nut and the casing and it doesn't work. :(:(:(:(:(

  3. there should be a spade connector on the back of the alternator ,thats where the wire goes to and then hopefully your rev counter will work again

Thanks for the reply, looked at the back of the alternator still cannot find anywhere for it to go, i'll have another look

  5. I have a funny feeling it's brown on the 300, but I'm far away from mine at the moment and can't check

    Hi,

Where does the wire go to? i have no rev counter but have found a wire hanging at the back of the alternator ( a small grey coloured one with a spade conector ) cannot find where it could possibly go

    Thanks

  7. Erm, is it just me or is there no airfilter in that system? If so I dont think your engine is going to like you much  .

Knew someone would ask that, lol, i have made a filter that fits directly in the snorkel pipe, had the air vacuum checkad and all is well

  8. Well ! Here it is in all it's glory ! ;) Didn't even have to cut the inner wing, just came through where the air pickup pipe was from the air box. Also have loads of room now for another battery for when i get my snorkel  Any questions will be gladly answered

  9. I don't know if its the same as the 96 disco, but disconnect the battery first for about 15 mins then try the sychning of the fob by pressing it 4 times, if the same as the 96 then the hazards will flash 3 times and the doors will lock

Thanks for the reply, i will give it a go, i'm up for anyhthing at the moment. Thanks

  10. By opening the passenger door you are triggering the alarm/immobiliser that is why it won't start - if it has been locked on the drivers door and then unlocked on the drivers door then it will be fine as you can do this on the early ones.

The remote or the receiver are not working properly - you could try reprogramming this or do you have a spare one?

    Thanks for the reply.

I have two remotes and both seem to be the same and do nothing to the locking system

  11. Does your Dosco run or is it spinning but not starting, Ive seen a problem in the wiring loom on the inner wing (conections corroded, signs were that the loom was slightly swelled) but more likely just a faulty fob.

When i activate the system by going it through the passenger door there is no lights or anything when i try to start it, just as though there is no battery on the car then, when i get out, lock the doors again and go in the drivers door, it starts fine.

  12. Hey,

    Right i'm gunna pick your brains ! I have a Disco 300Tdi 1994 M Plate with a remote key fob that doesn't work :(

It has one button on it in like an oval shape, when pressed, it does flash red but nothing happens to the central locking.

I have tried the resetting procedure that it states in the manual of standing within range of the vehicle and pressing the button three times but still, Nothing, when i turn the key in the door the indicators flash three times so i take it this could be a factory immobiliser or something, when i go in through the passenger door the indicators start to flash but no sound and the ignition is dead.

Hope someone had the same and knows what the problem is.

  13. Dean,

My Discovery 300 Tdi had a metallic clapping noise, also speed related, checked tappets, all pulleys, removed the timing belt cover to check for something catching, found none, eventually the source was the steel cupped disk on the back of the serpentine belt crank shaft pulley. It was slightly out-of-round, and touched the timming belt cover lip, but only when rotating at idling speed and higher. I eventually removed the dished cap, but installed a propper dust seal in the timing belt cover, and no more tapping noises on my Tdi..... : ;)

Thanks for the comments, All done now, did turn out to be the vacuum pump, removed it from the engine and started it up, hey presto... no tapping. Went to the Landrover garage at Stocksbridge which i can highly recommend and bought a brand new one in box for £50.

    Sounds fantastic now

  14. Check the vacuum pump and the fuel lift pump as both are prone to tapping/clattering noises and of course both vary with revs.

Also I assume you checked the rotator caps were all still in place and intact when you did the valve clearances?

Yeah, all rotator caps all still there, will deffo have a look at the vacuum pump tomorrow, a couple of people have said it could be the problem.

    Thanks for the reply

  15. Has anyone got a Disco 300Tdi that has a tapping sound from the engine bay ? i have set all the tappets to 0.20mm which is the correct gap but still have this annoying tapping sound that increases speed when revved so this has to be a crank problem, i have been told it could be a dodgy fuel injector but i have slackened each and every pipe off but still no difference in noise so now i am wondering if it could be a problem with the vacuum to the brakes.

Someone must have experienced the same problem, please let me know if you managed to cure it, would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Dean :blink::unsure::(
