  1. I have a 300tdi. When used every day there is no problem but if it left for a week and a half or two weeks without running, the battery although it has power, hasn't enought to start the engine. Jump leads immediately start it , no problem, Any ideas??

    Cheers

  2. Many years ago i had a similar problem with a car which turned out to be, wait for this, A sweet wrapper in the fuel tank !! and intermittently would block the fuel outlet. When the car had been stopped it floated free and then the car would start again, only to occur again at some random time, sometimes once a month, sometimes twice a day... Just an off the wall Idea which it may well be, a blockage...

Hope you find the problem, i know it drove me mad..

  3. hey there hope some of you guys can help me i have recently bought a 300tdi disco and all was fine apart from leaking oil like a sive lol but i have encounted a fuelling problem its intermitant when it happens it sends the engine into stall and just stays there you can put your foot on the gas and does nothing u just have to wait for it to either cut out or stop please help me as its becoming more and more common i have checked derv filters and pipes for any air getting in and nothing its driving me nuts ANY IDEAS AND REMEDIES please guys many thanks dazwell24

  4. I have a 1996 Automatic Disco. It changes into top gear at 52 mph, is it possible to make it change into top at plus minus 45mph. It feels that it should change earlier when I'm driving, plus this would surely make it more economical and I don't feel I need the high revs. Any ideas??

    Cheers

  5. The speed sensor is like a On/Off switch.

On the green wire with a yellow stripe it receives +12 V after ignition on - test that.

On the remaining black wire with a red stripe it sends back the +12V signal when its closed. It closes 6 times every wheel revolution (almost 2 times per handbrake drum revolution) - test the disconnected speed sensor for intermittent continuity while you turn the handbrake drum with one rear wheel lifted from the ground (be careful on safety!).

Took the speed sensor out, cleaned it, tested it. Put it back to try it and it works !! Don't know how long for but happy for now. Especially as Paddock quoted £44 plus p and p. Thanks a lot for the input.

    Thanks, will try this tomorrow.

  7. My disco is a 1996 so it's an electronic speed sensor type. The speedo has just stopped working, can anyone tell me how to test the sensor to find out if it's that or the clock that's gone. Any help will be appreciated, cheers.

  8. Hi there,

I'm having to say goodbye to my Disco 300 tdi, packing in work and my other vehicle gets double the mileage so no option I'm afraid. Can anyone advise on the best place to market it, it's a 1996 Auto and there are only 61,000 miles on so I'm hoping it will go easily.

    Cheers

  9. One month ago my 300tdi Auto 96 Jap import, EXACTLY the same problem as yours. If you look further down at the latest post on my Discofan name, I added that yesterday. This will take you though all the things I did and the helpful replies. In the end when it wouldn't start, the same as yours, and I was also beside myself as you are, I gave up and put it on a trailer and took it to the agents [can't tow automatic]. Was very worried about costs but they fixed it and charged me one hours' labour only. The fuel needed bleeding even though I'd done it 4 times myself. When I got it back it started but was difficult from cold. I tested the glow plugs with a test light and found that 2 weren't working [they were fine before the head went]. They looked perfect but only the test with the light showed two faulty[1 and 4]. It is now going a treat, hope this helps. I know EXactly how you must feel, good luck.....

  10. Hi there,

Bringing you up to date with my long running saga, she is now FIXED...very happy....

Recovered the Landy to the agent when it wouldn't start after replacing the head. They were great. They bled the fuel system and got it started. They only charged me £80 odd. It took a bit of starting, pumping etc. so I bought 4 new glow plugs from Paddock Spares. The story there was that they cost me £2.58 each plus vat instead of the £20.50 each plus vat!!! Paddock got them to me next day. Their service is faultless.

Put the new ones in and lo and behold, magic.... Statrts fine now and after an oil and oil filter change it's driving a treat.

Thanks for all the technical support.

    Norman

  11. {Picking it up tomorrow, heart in mouth!! Let u know.

Picked the disco up yesterday from the agents. They had bled the fuel system, re-charged the battery, £80 odd . Drove it 30 odd miles home and it drove and sounded sweet. So it seems that the work I did doing the head etc turned out right, also another thing was I replaced the thermostat as it didn't seem to be spot on when I tested it [may have been the cause of the whole nigtmare?]

All the help from you landy techies was appreciated and also your interest in the results. [sotal] I am a fairly new forum member although have had Landies on and off for years.I'll watch the forum for sure from now on.

    cheers

  12. sotal - yeah knew that bit - hence my first post, the EDC bit was news to me though, just forgot to to say it correctly!

Latest news on my disco problem, took it to the agent [had to put it on a transporter as it's an automatic and couldn't be towed]. They just called back to say IT'S DONE!!. They bled the fuel system, re-charged the battery and it's started and going..... I tried to bleed the system and obviously they have the equipment and experience to do it better. So, one hours' labour charge and vat and Bobs your uncle.

Although I still don't know what actually caused the breakdown in the first place I can only hope that it's solved. Once I've collected it and done the 30 odd miles back from the garage I'll feel better.

Cheers for all the help everyone, fingers crossed.........

  13. This may sound stupid from my side, but are the glow plugs wired up, one tends to forget the power supply wire to no 4 glow plug, as it tends to disappear behind the head when disconnected, or is it only the mechanical diesel pump systems that has glow plugs? Second basic test, "hot wire" the cut off solenoid directly from the battery.

Thanks eveyone, I've taken the day off today, Disco headache, went to play golf to forget it.... I'm back onto it tomorrow and will try everything out.really grateful for all the ideas...watch this space....

  14. If you've had the head off AND had it skimmed the chances of any of the valve clearances being correct are zero.

Check all the clearances, i should think the valves are all being held open.

Mowed the lawn, fixed the outside light,I suppose the time has come...GOT to go and try again, will try the options you have both suggested. Let you know, fingers crossed.

    Cheers

  15. Is the fuel cut off switch connected/working, and did you re-set the tappets?

If you did, then try a tow start - sometimes a rebuilt head makes a diesel lump very difficult to start.

    Les.

    Hi Les

The fuel cut off switch?? where is it? I didn't re-set the tappets, would this make a difference. Can't tow start it 'cos its automatic. It does say in the maual that they are difficult to start after this kind of work on them. I've done this job on a 200 before and had no problems. When it broke down I was 50 miles from home on may back after just completing 4500 miles around Spain feeling really smug as tis car is fairly new to me. It's a jap import , a County, and only has 60,000 on the clock.

    thanks, Norman

  16. Disco overheated, lost all water, got towed home by AA.

I have stripped the head, had it machined, new head gasket on, new thermostat. Put it all back together, finished today and.. the engine won't start.

I've bled the fuel system as described in Haynes manual but it still won't start. Engine turns over but won't fire. Bearing in mind that it all started with overheating, stopped immediately and there was water everywhere under the bonnet, none in the oil. Any ideas of what to try next will be very welcome, I'm tearing my hair out..
