  1. HI

Nothing to worry about - i guess the temperature has dropped recently? This is the fuel burning heater which is located under the front passenger wing with a small exhaust pipe projecting through to beneath the bumper.

The heater is fully automatic and should swith on when the air temp drops to 5C or something similar - it is there to warm up the interior heater quickly on cold mornings and also assists the engine in heating up quickly.

The colder the morning the more exhaust you see as it will burn off any damp on its components and then you always see more exhaust on cold frosty mornings.

One tip would be is if you park it in a garage at home to make sure you have plenty ventilation as, as you say, it continues to run after the engine is switched off.

No big bills now - what can i have for xmas???!!

Thanks Mark, you're an absolute Godsend mate, she was going to have me chopping it in for a Seat Altea...lol

I'll add you to the xmas list...lol

  2. My wife has been complaining of a vacuum cleaner type noise coming from the car when driving and that it stays on for sometimes as much as a few minutes after switching off.

I checked it today and her description is perfect, sounds like an upright vacuum cleaner even with the engine off, I checked under the front of the car and found what seems to be the source.

There is a small exhaust type pipe under the bumper at the passenger side of the car, when the engine is running this blows hot air/fumes, when the engine is switched off it continues to do so for a few minutes and the vacuum type noise continues.

When I started the car from cold this morning I ran the engine for a few minutes on idle, then switched the engine off, I checked the pipe again and it was blowing out what appeared to be exhaust gases.

Quite worried about this as it too close to xmas for an expensive repair.

Anyone able to offer any help on what it might be and what I might be able to do myself to rectify it.

    Thanks in advance.

  3. I refer you to my previous comments - if no-one's heard of JSG and your only information is "it doesn't fit", what were you expecting people to do? Or did you want everyone on the forum to post "Sorry, I don't know, good luck though!"

Without starting a full on debate as whether you found my query suitable, or on the other hand you found it to be too vague for your monstrously huge appetite for information. I would like to say......get a life!

Some folk may have tried these fittings before from Jsg and if not may at some time in the future consider them so a post like mine isn't a waste of anyones time other than mine, as I put it on the wrong forum.

    Should've put it on http://www.freelanderclub.org/.

  4. Forgive me - The fitting procedure for these is "put bolt in hole", if that process fails, either you can't work a spanner (which I would say is usually an unlikely state of affairs) or the thing itself is made wrong.

If it's the first one, then you are probably beyond help.

If it's the second, then there's not much anyone on the internet can do unless you post something useful like a photo of the problem.

    Pass me that banana...

They sent the wrong brackets initially.

I measured them up took the digital photos and sent them to JSG, they offered to mod them for me, ended up doing it myself......less hassle but not ideal.

I was really just looking for someone to say.....I got steps from the same supplier and had a similar problem or I had steps from the same supplier and they were fine.

Rob at JSG turned out to be a great help and it was just a new supplier they used for the brackets that had cut holes in the wrong position.

  5. With that attitude, you're welcome!

Perhaps, just perhaps, no-one's heard of JSG, and without any useful detail to go on other than "it doesn't fit", the opportunity for offering helpful advice is a tad limited. Also, posting on a forum before contacting JSG to see if they can offer any insight is perhaps premature.

Or maybe, just maybe, the members of an off-road forum really can't be arsed to answer a half-baked query about a bolt-on cosmetic accessory.

Let's face it the freelander itself is a bit of a mummsy cosmetic accessory (ask any proper landrover owner) :P , hence it's my wifes car, If I wanted a 4x4 I'd have bought a proper one.

I wanted a shopping cart with a bit of road presence which was feminine enough for a young woman to drive, the side steps were for the kids to get in and out so not really all that cosmetic IMO

No wonder there aren't many Freelander folk visiting the Freelander Forum regularly.

As for a half baked query....Lets face it a monkey with half a brain could've got the idea.

Are you a monkey? do you possess half a brain...............I'll reserve my judgement

  6. Hello!

pends where you are on the engine.....

there is a small clear(ish) plastic filter on the rear of the engine easily seen from the drivers side which is attached at one end but not at the other.

its a breather filter only so there is no other hose that has dropped off.

    Thanks Rustymark.

It's the correct one your speaking about.

I checked it against another freelander which the owner was kind enough to show me. The small filter is a breather which should be open to the atmosphere at one end, I had attached it to another breather which should have been the same which is a small black metal gooseneck pipe just above where the filter should be fixed.

I noticed a bit of grey smoke after a couple of days with these two bits joined together. oops!

When I seen the error I had made I changed it back and all was well again.

  7. My wife noticed a small clear plastic thing in the engine bay that was connected to a hose at the lower end but nothing at the other.

I've looked through a few images and found out it's and Egr vacuum air filter thingie?

It's obviuosly there for a good reason, will it cause any problems being removed or do I need to get it sorted Asap, I can see where it attaches to, but can't attach it as the end doesn't appear. fit properly.

well 36 views so far and no replies, your all obviously as thick as me....lol.

If this was a defender it would be answered in no time as those guys tend to know their stuff.

  9. I bought a set of sidesteps for my Freebie, looked straight forward enough to fit, even with the terrible instructions...lol

Anyway four hours into the job I had only managed to fit the front passenger side bracket as per the instructions, then moved onto the middle one which I could only get one bolt through and then the rear which again I only got one bolt through.

It looks like these brackets just don't fit, the company who sells them on ebay JSG Direct have thousands of positive feedback and seem to have a good rep, I've emailed them tonight to see if it's maybe just been a bad batch or if it's me that's being cackhanded.

Hopefully they'll get back to me with an easy fix.

BTW, have any of you used steps from JSG Diretc in the past?

  10. hi can anyone tell me if you can run 215/60/16 tyres on front and 215/65/16 on back

I'm not very technically minded to say the very least, so don't pay too much attention as I may be talking through the wrong orrifice.

I think this would end up making your front wheels travel faster than the rear due to the different overall radius, on a Front wheel drive car no real problem. I'm thinking that this may just be enough to mess with your 4x4 electronic gadgetry. Might also mess with your hill decent control.

As I said I know very little about these things and the tolerances/sizes etc may be too small to make a real difference.

Sorry if I've created more questions for you....lol

  11. Problem Solved!

Darnley Landrover called to so the Freebie is all fixed and tickety boo.

Apparently it was a broken gear selector arm that was causing the noise/vibration sensation through the gearstivk. They removed the gearbox fixed the selector arm and fished out the broken bit to save any future mishaps.

After a good test drive it got the thumbs up.........I'll be able to take it on my 1000 mile roadtrip to kent and back, I'll let you all know how it went and the MPG figures etc as I know there is some interest on MPG due to recent events.

  12. Been looking around and there seems to be plenty of 2nd hand prefacelift freelander 1 nudge bars on the market, will these fit the facelifted model?

I've seen the soft plastic nudge bars for the facelift version and don't really like them, they just don't look bold enough and merge so well with the lines of the car that they are hardly noticeable.

  13. I've been using Millers Diesel power sport 4 for a couple of years in various diesel cars I've had including my current Audi A4 1.9Tdi and my last Vectra 1.9 Cdti, it gave me about 10% better fuel economy equating to roughly an extra 60 miles per tank which was very good value for money as a bottle only costs a tenner and last about 10 tanks

Are any of you guys using this or anything similar on your TD4s if so what kind of results are you getting?

  14. Thanks Westender.

I found a couple of good sites which have Freelander accessories, all quite pricey. Looks like 200 is about the norm for sidesteps and 300 for an A bar, 100 quid should cover the front and rear lamp guards.....it really does all add up.

then there ar spotlights and a new wheel cover, when does it ever end.....lol

  15. I recently bought some side steps (part no. STC7940) for my freebie second hand but they didn't come with and brackets or fixings to attach them. Before buying them I rang my local dealer and asked if I could order them in and they said sure so I bought the steps. When the parts came in I found that that the dealer was trying to sell me a "fixing kit" which was basically a box of assorted nuts and bolts for £60!!! I told them to stick it but now I'm stuck with no way to attach my steps. Has anyone any idea how I could get hold of some brackets and fixings for these steps as I have hit a dead end?

    Thanks a lot!

I'm sure I see a set for sale from an ebay shop a couple of days ago, can't remember which one as I was just browsing and didn't pay too much attention, might have been powerful.uk (I think that's the name).

    Hope this helps

  16. 41mph obviously a 1.8 petrol then....only joking.

I know what you mean about the Freelanders getting a roasting....Horses for courses, mine is a every day car , the only off road it'll see is maybe mounting the odd kerb to allow others to get by on narrow roads.

As a family bus it suits me perfectly, it's sturdy, good driving position, good big walls on the tyres so her indoors doesn't scuff the alloys, 2.0td4 economy and oomph, excellent for the odd fishing and camping trip too.

Only had mine a couple of weeks and really glad we bought it. Beats the astra SRi vvti we got rid of hands down.

  17. I've been on the forum most days since signing up a less than a month ago, It looks like there are very few Freelander owners getting involved in the forum.

I think it would be a good wee excercise to see how many Freelander owners we have and where they all located, might even lead to a few meets once folk get to know who's where and how many of us there are.

I'll add my name below and hopefully more will follow, maybe once we get a good list we can get a outing or event arranged.

Just copy and paste the list below onto the reply box and add your names

  18. The news is good and bad.

The bad news is Land Rover say the gearbox needs to come off and a new something or other rod link thingy needs replaced.

The good news is I'm still within the Arnold Clark warranty so they are covering it.

I called the Darnly Land Rover dealers who are doing the work and asked if they could give the car a quick look over while doing the work to the gearbox, I was quite shocked to hear they wanted to charge me for the labour to do it even though my car is in their garage for at least four days at their extortionate labour rates.

Told them just to do the work the car was in for. It's a real pity as shhould they have had found a few problems with it they would have been getting paid to put them right by Arnold Clark.

Seems like a false economy on their part, or at least on the snooty service womans part!
