  1. Thanks all. I have a feeling its going to be the pump on the way out. It was making a nice humming noise a few days back but now it is suspiciously silent  . I did put my ear to the floor of the rear tub and cant hear a sound.

Is there an easy way to check if the pump is working? What id i disconnect the fuel line from the side of the filter and turn the ignition on?

    Thanks, Matt.

  2. Hi all, I seem to have developed an engine stutter/lack of power. Its a 110 2001 TD5.

The problem suddenly started on my way back home one night. It drives fine in the lower rev range but starts to stutter and produce very little power in the higher rev range.

I have replaced the injector loom back in July and cleaned out the plugs on the ECU. I will look for signs of fresh oil at the injector loom plug tonight.

Anyone have any ideas on where to look next?

    Thanks,

    Matt..

  3. Hi all,

I'm in the process of refurbishing a Warn M8000 that was dead. I finally got round to taking the motor off today, popped the end cap odd and this is what has happened...

    HPIM2048.jpg

Now I'm sure that should all be in one piece! The back brush has shattered and the wires have come away from both the brush and the bolt/terminal.

This is the first time that I have played with winches so I'm a bit stuck here. I have tried to solder the wires back on but it just won't take.

Is there anywhere that I can buy some new brushes? Is there a different way to fix it?

Any help is very welcome

    Matt.

  4. You were right guys!

pulled out ECM side plug (red one) lots of oil inside!! So that means that I need to replace the injector wiring harness? Is it just that or will there likely be other things wrong as a result?

I'm not going to bother taking off rocker cover now if I have alreadt found the problem, cos I need Landy for work until I can get the parts sent out (Im in France)

I cant make things worse by driving it for a few more days can i?

Do you think the injectors will be ok, is it a common problem?

Thanks a million to everyone who has helped me get to the bottom of this problem, these forums are invaluable

    Happy driving (and tinkering)

    Steve

So you removed the red plug from the ECU under the drivers seat and it was full of oil?

If thats the case then you will need to change the injector harness as the seal on the plug has gone. Your local LR Dealer will also tell you that the whole engine loom will need replacing but this is usualy rubish.

Once you have changed your injector loom, clean out the ECU end of the harnes with some contact cleaner. Put a whole load in and keep spraying until it runs clean and the oil has gone. Check it every few days and repeat if needed. Soon the oil will stop comming and you may just be lucky and not have to change the loom.

This happened with my 2001 TD5. Changing the injector harness is not a hard job. Took me around 20 mins to do the whole lot and it was the first time I had taken the top off!

  5. I run my 2001 Defender 110 TD5 on a 50% bio deisel mix with no issues other than an extra filter change due to the bio removing some gunk from the system.

I have also run on 40% used and filtered (to 10 microns) veg oil for around 6 months with no problems.

    Matt.

  6. Hi all,

I have been given an old Warn M8000 by a friend that was covered in mud and dust.

I have stripped it down and discovered thet the motor is burnt out.

I am going to put a new motor in but which motor do I put in? Im not to clued up on winches and have read that some of the motors are interchangable to give more power?

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks,

    Matt

  7. Hi all, I am trying to get my head around a rear PTO problem.

I would like to tow a hydraulic gang mower behind a defender 90 (200 tdi). The mower is usually powered via a tractor rear PTO and needs to be driven by a tractor that is 70hp @ 550rpm.

Anyone got any experience with fitting a rear PTO to a defender? Can this be done or am I barking up the wrong tree?

    Thanks, Matt

  8. Got most thing sorted now. I replaced the pipe, flushed the coolant system and all seems ok after 500 Miles.

Still have the kangaroo or stutter problem though. Seems to be intermittent. Could this be a turbo problem?

Where can I find the turbo actuator? I want to get a pair of grips on it like porny suggested?

  9. I wont be getting new pipe until tomorrow so I wrapped insulation tape around the split and filled it back up. Just been out on a 1 hour drive around town in traffic and no problems so I guess it was a weak point on the pipe.

Picked up an injector loom and going to fit it this afternoon..

    Keep tunned :)

  10. Thanks all.

I am going to get a injector loom today and clean up the red plug. I am also going to do what Andrew has and place a connector block between the plug and the loom to prevent more oil reaching the ecu. I will also test the actuator as suggested by Porny. I am in Kent by the way but thanks for the kind offer Ian.

I will also get a new pipe to replace the burst one and refill the system. Run it to get it warm and check for bubbles in the header tank, smell for combustion gasses and give the pipes a squeeze to check the pressure.

I will report back when its done.

Thanks all, I would be lost without this forum!

  11. Problem could be either the throttle potentiometer or oil in the loom. Pull the red plug off the ecu and check for oil. Plenty of posts on this. Throttle pot will need hooking up to diagnostic gear to check. Neither are the end of the world.

Problem 2 is just bad luck. Check rest of your hoses to see if they are soft or chafing.

Great advice. I have checked the ecu and there is oil all over the red plug. So i guess a new engine loom will be needed for that problem. I did give it a swill out with some cleaner but it has not made any difference.

As for the pipe, I guess you are saying its best to replace it, check for any others that look past their best and keep an eye on it?

    Thanks,

    Matt.
