I've done more comp safaris than I care to count, and a puncture can mean some miles at speed with a flat or no tyre. The modulars will usually bend to the point that they are scrap or a very third rate spare, the disco steels usually only have minor lip damage. You also get less dirt ingress as the rims stay straighter. However for more conservative use I can see the benefit of changing cheaper wheels more frequently.
