gearbox is it dying

300tdi discovery n plate the last week its been getting harder changing down to second gear no prob changing up is it the syncro going and the other prob is a funny one when reversing it gives the feeling that the hand brake is holding then there is a clonk and it continues to reverse ok is this a centre diff problem any ideas before i get a recon box thanks chris.

What effect does double declutching have on changing into second gear? If it improves the gear selection then that indicates possible syncro wear (premitting that the clutch is fully disengaging, check fluid levels too!).

Can't comment about the handbrake other than check it's not actually binding when you reverse. On Series motors it has happened where the material on the brake shoe has actually come away from the shoe and were jamming the drum.

i dont think its the handbrake it gives the impression that something is winding up like if you had smaller wheels on the back the centre diff isnt stuck in ive played with that on a field like you said prob is syncro wear but i cant work out the winding up chris
