Hi there to you all

this is my first posting. here i go.

I am going to start to take my ird unit out of my 1999-2000 freelander today and see if it is possible to recon it myself for you can get the bearings of the internet for a fraction of the price. QUESTION. as any one tried this on there drive before and do you need any specal tools to get the bearings and races out.

I can do most jobs but this is going to be a head scratcher.

Many Thanks Smiffy

Yes you can recon it yourself, probably just the crownwheel and pinion and one bearing will need replaced so I would open it up first. I rebuilt mine for £35!!!!

The Heat Echanger is very difficult to get off without damage and they're not cheap. The bearing behind the crownwheel will probably be shot and I had to get an engineering shop to remove the old race because it is blind with no notch to get it out.

Hi there

Thanks for your reply

i got the unit striped down two bearings had a lot of wear the crownwheel was in good condition but i damaged The Heat Echanger in doing so

just got to put it all back together now. had a idea to get The Heat Echanger out and that is to heat it up so the rubber seal starts to melt and goes soft.

Just got to find where i can get a new seal from.

Yeah, I tried that but it didn't work for me. I was lucky in that I was making one good one out of two bad ones and pretty much all the bits that were shot on one were good on the other.
