Jimbo-TD5
I think the selectors are sticking/worn/knackered on my gearbox because when I stop at lights etc. I sometimes cant get back into 1st to pull off, I cant move the stick across to select either 1st or 2nd, I can only get third!!! This has occurred over the last 2 days and now its getting bad. Is there anyway of getting at the selectors?? Or is it not this! any help ASAP would be much appreciated!!! cipx2
Most common causes are either the bias plate broke or a grub screw sheared/worked itself loose. Both things can be addressed in situ but you'll have to remove the console and the rubber dust cover. There are some threads on here about the bias plate with pics. Let me know if you can't find them.
Jimbo-TD5
Hi mate, thanks for getting back to me, I have searched for "bias plates" but cant find the thread, any chance you have the link?? much appreciated!!
cipx2
Actually there are quite a few links and I can't make up my mind which one should be the best, there's a bit of useful info in many of them. So here's a quick way to find these threads: http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q="bias+plate"+site%3Alr4x4.com (if it doesn't work type "bias plate" site:lr4x4.com in a google search field) PS. Edited to enforce a more restrictive search.
Jimbo-TD5
Ok thanks very much for your help, Ive ordered a bias plate (as it was so cheap i may as well replace it while im in there!!) and I will have to wait till the weekend to strip it. I will let you know how it goes!!!
Jimbo-TD5
Right ive stripped the top off now and neither of these are the problems! the bias plate is perfect and the grub screw is in place. anything else I can look for??
cipx2
the grub screw is in place. That is not enough. I would take it off (it's loctited in place so you might need heat), examine the tip, inspect the shaft for scratches where the grub screw touches it (scratches indicate the yoke slipped and the grub screw didn't do its job). Then fit a new grub screw (this is what the manual says upon removal anyway). If no luck, test drive it like that and see what happens when it happens. Good luck! PS. I should have said this from the start. This happened to me once when my wife put her house keys on the gearbox gaiter without me noticing (the gaiter is kinda shaped like a pocket on my vehicle). In less than 2 miles the keys shifted their position and I couldn't select 1st/2nd.
Jimbo-TD5
i know the problem!!!! looking at your picture I just realised that the rubber ring is missing from around the ball!! this one: the ball is just falling about in the top of the box!!! where can I get one of these rubbers and whats the part number?? thanks!!!!!
cipx2
Glad you found the problem. I suspect the gear stick was also feeling like being loose and this would have been an indication of the wear at the yoke bits level. The "rubber" thinghy is a plastic bush with a circlip securing it to the yoke and keeping the ball in. Here's the exploded diagram: where: 7= yoke assembly FTC4622 8= grub screw FTC4536 9= selector yoke spherical bush (spherical on the inside) FTC2203 10= snap ring (circlip) FTC4458 11= selector yoke ball FTC4249. If you don't want to buy the entire yoke assembly, I recommend to get at least 8+9+10+11 You can find more pics with the yoke from different angles in my R380 rebuilding thread in post #6. Just google for the part #s and you'll find several places to get the parts from.
Jimbo-TD5
Thanks so much for your help!!! Ill order the entire yoke assy now!! Im so happy to have got to the bottom of the problem! thanks again! James
cipx2
You're welcome. If you can't find the parts through the usual retailers or LR dealers you should be able to get them from the gearbox specialists (Ashcrofts, LEGS, TM Transmissions etc). Take your time upon reassembly, put the yoke with the grub screw in the very same spot and be careful not to drop bits inside the box. Jimbo-TD5
ordered the part today, only available genuine, just over 57 quid!!!! ohh well gotta be done!!!
cipx2
Hang on a bit. It doesn't worth 60 quid!!! You can get 8+9+10 for little over 2 quid from www.lrseries.com - they don't list the ball but ask them if they can source it. Or take a good look at the old ball, possibly it can be reused. I would cancel (or put on hold) the order and try source the bits from somewhere else. I suspected the assembly would be expensive, that's why I suggested getting the bits separately. Now I strongly suggest to get the bits and not the assembly
Jimbo-TD5
I had to have the whole assembly as it had been flopping about for ages and had damaged it (see pic, around the hole is all damaged from the stick being forced etc.) , I include a pic of what was left when I opened it up for your amusement!!!
