diki001
hi y'all, well it was all going swimmingly for a while, even during the 1st stages of the rebuild! working from the chassis up, a few bits that needed patching in the front wheelarches behind the evil plastic wheelarch liners (which are now off for good) and 1 little patch in the rear arch but seeing as its a 17 year old disco 1 200tdi, its been very good, even the rear crossmember and floor only had surface rust and the chassis is mint. However and here lies the problem and the answer to the topic title RUST! its in one of the most awkward places i can imagine, not even sure how to describe it but here goes. if you open the front and rear doors and look where the top of the door seal sits and the two panels (body and roof) meet the other end of the panel forms the roof gutter then its as rotten as a paper bag left out in the rain! is this a common fault? i only ask because i've never heard it mentioned, it will be a nightmare to sort out i reckon, has anyone any experience of this task? is there a panel available to weld in its place or must it be fabricated? so many questions and so little time! any help will be much appreciated, hopefully it can be overcome for not too great a cost. thanks guys and please help! Disco-Ron
Sounds to me like an odd place for corrosdion, might be a case of finding one in a breakers and cutting out a good section, then fettling it into yours.....
diki001
thats what i thought disco-ron, never seen one rusty there before, the N/S is as strong today as the day it was built, its just the O/S. would love to know what caused it just there in that place, where do the sunroof drains run? are they O/S? the roof panel that forms the gutter from the top is also strong so it cant be to blame, the headlining is dry, i've felt up underneath it and its dry and the inside of the roof is still factory white. anyone with any ideas, chuck them on here, i'm all ears. Mark
assuming you have the rear sunroof, the drains run down both sides, and the C-pillars. By the sound of it, maybe one side has become disconnected at the sunroof, and allowed water to drain into the shell? Probably worth checking the drains on the sunroof anyway, whilst repairing the rust...
