Power Steering Pump

In an effort to diagnose a sound that is getting progressively louder, and more and more worrying to me, I pulled the aux belt off 'cos I think one of the pulleys is going south. Main noise is what sounds like low frequency rumble (obviously not the normal engine sound!) a bit like a pulley being lose and vibrating. So, to check I pulled the belt off and ran the engine... no noise! Next, I gave each pulley a few turns to 'feel' or hear the noise, the only one that makes a noise that I'm not sure about is the power steering. It makes a sort of click noise as I turn it, not loud, but imagine a fan turning with something just clipping the blades.

If this is normal, then the bottom pulley (which I guess drives the whole belt assembly) is the only one I can't turn by hand... and I suspect is quite important! :-)

Have a look in youre power steering resevoir, see if the oil has a "metalic" look to it. If so its youre pump bearing on the way out.

Had the same on mine a while back, a distinct rumble, when i took the belt off i couldn't hear or feel anything. Two days later pump went on the Motorway, oil everywhere, horrible sqeakling noise like a cat was being strangled!

Ah, that's interesting... I did check the fluid yesterday and it is clearly very dark brown, a bit burnt smelling, and maybe metallic looking? Very shiny and reflective for sure!
