Do R380 gearbox's always leak?

Hi all,

I have recently had an R380 gearbox fitted on my Triumph TRV8, replacing an old LT77. The new 'box, although only a few weeks and a couple of thousand miles old has already developed a leak from the rear oil seal and MTF94 is now adorning my garage floor in ever increasing quantities.

The TR specialist that supplied and fitted the replacement box said that it is 'quite normal for the R380 to loose a little oil from the rear seal'. I think this is b******t but I thought that I would seek the wisdom of those who would know more about these 'boxes than anyone else hence this post to this forum.

So, is this normal for the rear seal to weep/ leak???

Thanks

Rob

Most Land Rover R380 gearboxes are fitted with a transfer box immediately behind the rear oil sealso any leakage will go into the transfer box and does not drip onto the garage floor. Having said that the two R380 gearboxes that I have owned never seemed to loose any oil - but Land Rovers have a very poor record on oil tightness so any minor gearbox leak tends to get lost in the general flood of oil that drips from everywhere!
