fireblade7
how easy/hard is it to change the mainshaft in a td5 380 gearbox for a 300 tdi mainshaft mike
Tanuki
Physically, it's possible: the big problem is that gears wear and with time become 'hobbed' to match the other gears they're meshing with - so if you throw together a random bunch of gears/shafts that have previously never played together it's hard-to-impossible to work out the necessary clearances or predict what's likely to happen in future. Guesswork and luck might get you a combination of gears/shafts that at first assembly might work together silently - but over the next 10,000 miles the high- and low-points of the gears can wear down and leave you with a horrid noisy-and-rattly box-of-swarf. The labour-cost and vehicle-off-road downtime-cost of a gearbox swap far exceeds the cost of the gearbox itself.
