  1. I was in Newbury today and was planning to pop down and drive a few miles of the Wayfarers in a general route back towards Swindon.

I had my OS maps, which i'd marked up a while ago, and the bulk of the track looked like it was byway. but where i actually was on the tarmac road, there seemed to be little in the way of tyre tracks.

anyone know if the wayfarers is still legal for vehicles?

    cheers!

Wayfarers is byway from the A34 west, although there is a short section of bridleway that you have to make a detour around up on the ridge. You can follow connecting byways as far as the village of Oxenwood. The first section from the A34 isn't used that much.

  2. No. We did half of that one, Honeydown Bottom, from west to east and back. We resisted the temptation to "jump" the gap. :)

The shells were discovered at SU114501.

James, they may have been used but I do not think that they have done the BANG! thing yet.

Use this route - don't turn back at the 'End of Right of Way' signs. This route is marked as a through road on old maps. Also you may notice half way between said signs off to the north (the actual definitive line), there is an old byway finger post pointing in both directions.

    Use it or lose it!

  3. Spoke to Lt Col Nigel Linger(sp?) just now. He says that they have never used high explosive rounds up there and agrees that they may be illuminated mortar rounds and, indeed, quite safe. He was interested to hear about our day driving "lost" rights of way but is sadly keen to see a lot of them extinguished - particularly the "tails" of lost rights of way.

Hmmm, thought these had been already removed from the definitive map. I know the MOD made an application four or five years ago to do this. Must check out my paperwork.

  4. when you get them, remove the window lock catch in the frame and pour in loads of waxoil, tilt the frame so that it runs out at both ends and tilt it sideways so that it coats the side of the bottom channel as well. OR buy the all aluminium ones at twice the price!

Who sells ali ones? That makes sense, even at twice the price!

  5. had problem's with Rocky Mountain doortops not being the right shape (they don't follow the windscreen frame), dunno if this is the same with others but may be worth getting unglazed, bend as required and then glaze

I've reglazed in the past on a different vehicle and never had great results.

  6. A stick is what you need!

Decide how much you want to shorten her by and then cut a stick to the same length. As long as you cut every panel to the length of the stick, you can't go wrong!! Well, it worked for me!

    couple of suggestions:

Obvious, but strengthen the chassis with plenty of plating once you welded it, especially if you're planning on doing any recovery with a kenetic rope!

Get a cutom tank made - I had one that followed the slope of the rear seat and to the full available width and held about 18 gallons. Made a filler pipe and cap that exited thru the rear three quarter panel.

Roof is hardest as it curves. Find the straighest point and either get someone who can weld ali to do it, or pot rivet it to an overlapping plate, which it what I did. After that I glued aircraft carpet to the roof to keep the noise down.

Sometimes the rear tailgate frame can be in a bit of a mess - worth doing plenty of work on this or get a better one.

it's a lot more work than it looks tho, so allow plenty of time!

If you need more pix, I can probaly dig some out (72 - 2 door model)

    Good luck

  7. Tell me more?

I seem to remember GON2FAR SUSPENSION (07812 717 550) supply high angle props. Best solution if you don't want to cut n shut a prop yourself.

Straping the axle would work as well - done that before to stop my springs dropping out.

    Limits articulation tho.

  8. Exmoor will be interesting to watch. Nearly all the RUPPs are used by Hunt followers several days a week and I can't see them thinking twice about still driving them.

In fact I met a vitara and a Discovery piloted by tweady types a good half a mile from the nearest right of way out over Ilkerton Ridge last week. They were gone before I got close enough for a chat.

    Will :)

    Hmmm, that is interesting.

  9. half the byways on the isle of wight have the wrong signs on anyway. 1 end is byway and the other is a bridelway so what do we do  . we think it is all a big plan to kick all of us off every thing in the long run?

Yes, I suspect they will try to ban us from byways and URCs in the not too distant future as they just don't want us out there.

  10. Anyone know why all the ROWs on the east side of Westdown camp were closed to the public? I only discovered this after approaching one sign from behind - there was no sign at the other end of the BOAT!

    Chris

To my knowledge they're not closed. Occasionally the lesser know ones can be temporarily fenced off by the farmer to keep the cattle in.
