  1. Thanks for the input guys. A day and half spent heating it, hitting it, pulling it and swearing at it has achieved nothing. After 25 years of Land Rover ownership this is the first time that I've been beaten. So it's prop shaft back on for the time being and back on the road. I'll see if I can hire a decent slide hammer somewhere and have another crack at it next weekend but for now, I'm beat. I'm still utterly baffled at this, most absurd piece of Solihull design. A totally retrograde step from the nice and simple 200tdi set-up.

  2. I'm in the process of what I thought would be a straight forward job but which has rapidly descended into much swearing. I'm mid-way through replacing the pinion seal on my 2002 Td5 and I CANNOT shift the centre pin from the rear diff. I've made a sliding hammer (as per the Haynes book) but it won't shift. I've made a puller with some 8mm threaded bar (as per White90's excellent piece in the Tech Archive) but the bar snapped. I refuse to buy the LR special tool.

If anyone out there as any bright ideas on how to remove this wretched thing I'd be extremely grateful. Incidentally I'm not sure what the point of the centre pin actually is because I'm sure my old Defender never had one and that seemed to work pretty well.

    Thanks in anticipation.

  3. Hi,

I've had an ongoing intermittent fault on my 2002 Td5 where the warning lights on the dash come on, accompanied by three warning 'pings' (see photo). It seems to occur randomly and stopped altogether for about 3-4 months but has started happening again. I don't know if the fault is genuine or if it's a dodgy connection somewhere. I'm not even sure what the apparent fault is. I did post this question once before but got no responses so any thoughts from the diagnostic gurus out there would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Ged

  4. Thanks a lot for the input guys. I noted that priming the accelerator 3 times before starting seems to solve the issue so I'm not sure what that points to. Fortunately the Disco has 3 year mechanical warranty from the dealer so I'll get them to check it out.

  5. Hi,

My 2002 Td5 Disco has just started starting poorly from cold and hot. For no apparent reason it suddenly needs 5-10 seconds of turning over before it fires. Although it's winter here in Auckland it's only 18 degrees so hardly a cold start issue. I feel as though the engine is turning very fast during start-up although I could be wring as usually it fires after a quick flick so not heard it actually turning over before on the starter. Afterwards it seems to run fine. Any ideas?

    Thanks

  6. Hi,

Pulling out of a junction the other day in my 2002 Td5 there came a 'ping, ping, ping' warning sound and I noticed that the TC, ABS and one other warning light came on and stayed on. When I stopped at the traffic lights I tried turning the engine off and restarting and they went out. Then yesterday the same thing happened so I tried the same thing and they went out again. There didn't seem to be anything else amiss and the Disco didn't miss a beat. any thoughts as what might be going on? Is this just an electrical fault? (Blurred IPhone photo attached!)

    Thanks

  8. Hi James and thanks for your reply. Your optimistic talk of leak-free Land Rovers is music to my ears and once I've water-blasted the nasty reminders of my own leaks from my driveway I'll try to embrace your positive view of all-things Land Rover. I've not explored those locations so will follow your advice!

    All the very best. Ged

  9. Thanks for the replies guys. It's definitely oil. I've drawn out about 75ml and will see how it goes for a while.

Reducing the oil level doesn't appear to have made any difference. I note that the leak is coming from the vicinity of the oil filter [or maybe further up - hard to tell] so I may renew this in case the rubber seal got pinched or damaged during fitting. Probably clutching at straws.

Rant on: You know, I've owned 8 Land Rovers over the past 25 years with the exception of the last 2 1/2 years in NZ during which I've had a Subaru Forester and a Ford Explorer. Without exception, every single one of those Land Rovers (1xSeries 2a, 2xSeries 3, 4xTdi and Td5 Discoveries, 1xTdi Defender] has at one time or another leaked oil. I find it absolutely astonishing that a car maker with the pedigree and experience of Rover have, to-date been unable to produce an engine/gearbox/diff/transfer box that doesn't spew oil from one part or another. Other car-makers seem quite capable of this Holy Grail of automotive engineering but Rover, alas no. There was a time when the jokes of Rovers leaking oil (see comments above) made me chuckle but now they just seem, well, a bit sad. For just once it would be nice to be able to return to a Land Rover, after having parked it somewhere, without first having to glance under the engine bay to see how much of an environmental disaster I had left on the road. Rant over

  10. Well after being without a Land Rover for two and half years since arriving in NZ I was delighted to acquire a 2002 Td5. However, it was with much wailing and gnashing of teeth that I began to see those all too familiar spots of oil on the floor of my pristine garage where my previous Subaru and Ford had once stood.

The oil is leaking from somewhere high up on the lhs of the block towards the rear. I noted that the oil level on the dipstick is about 10mm above the top notch and wondered whether overfilling might be the culprit. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

  11. Thanks a lot for the info Bear. Yes, the cage does have a side door so that is an option but I was hoping to be able to put the cage length-ways in across the back and retain the use of the back seats. I've currently got a Ford Explorer which has sufficient width and length but not enough height! Maybe someone who has the 5 seat model could confirm the width between the storage boxes.

  12. Hi there,

Its been a long time since I visited here (had several Discoveries & Defenders in the past) but the possible acquisition of a Discovery Td5 has presented itself so I have a question. I have a large dog cage which I need to fit into the back of the Disco. It measures (in centimetres) 105(L)x70(W)x74(H). Can anyone tell me if this will fit into the rear load space of the Disco and allow the rear door to shut without folding the back seats down? The model I'm looking at is the 5 seater so no rear dickie seats.

    Thanks very much

  13. HI,

My dad in the UK has recently bought a 2001 V6 Freelander SE. He has asked me a couple of questions about the model but as my own Land Rover experience extends only to Defenders and Discoveries, I was hoping that one the Freelander gurus here may have the answers!

    - He wants to have a tow bar fitted and has been told by various folk that the Freelander doesn't have an indicator warning light on the dash for when the trailer is connected but rather relies on an audible buzzer in the back. Is this correct?

    - He also would like to know what the SE model actually is - as in what differentiates it from other models of the same year?

    - Finally, he'd like to know the maker of the engine. Is its Rover V6 or some other manufacturer?

    Thanks a lot.

  14. Hi,

We live in New Zealand but my dad (who lives in the UK) is interested in buying a Freelander. His trusty 1994 300tdi Disco has just expired and at 82 he could do with something a bit smaller. Although I've had a number of Discos and Defenders over the years I know NOTHING about Freelanders and would like to help him avoid buying a dud. Any advice about things that he should avoid or look out for would be greatly appreciated. I think that he should go for a Td4 rather than the petrol alternative on the grounds of running costs but I could be wrong. I think his wallet would extend to around a 2006/7 model from what I've seen on Eblag.

Thanks in advance for your pearls of wisdom

  15. Thanks. Thats really interesting guys. Need to change my ID - too many nationalities to list now. I'm hoping to get a Disco 2 circa 2002 so it looks as though I may have a problem. I'll need to measure opening exactly because these things are often not that accurate.

  16. Hi Folks,

Been a while since I've been here. Moved to NZ end of last year and been off the Rover scene while stuck in a Subaru. Looking to buy a Disco again and would appreciate some help. The company car park where I work has a height restriction of 1.9m. Can I get a standard Disco under the bar without leaving paintwork or metal behind?

  17. Hi Jim,

Just to let you know that after taking out the ECU I found that the red multi-plug & socket were absolutely running in oil so have given them both a good clean out. I just wondered if there was good way of getting oil out of the female sockets other than blowing and getting a gob-full of oil! Does a squirt with WD40 help or hinder the process. Also, where the hell is all that oil coming from and how do I prevent it happening again

    Thanks for all your help.
