  1. Yes, it was the shaft bearings. Thanks for the input.
  2. This is just to check the condition, not to drive the vehicle.
  3. The garage are pretty good, 4x4 specialists but they were talking about pulling the front half shafts so I'll have a word when I take it in. I know and they know that the VCU is ok so fingers crossed!
  4. Thanks for that, fingers crossed that's all it is.
  5. My 02 Freelander TD4 has started making a grating/grumbling noise at low road speeds, ie less than 35mph. I thought it was the near side front wheel bearing but that seems to be ok. It's going into the garage for "investigations" on Monday, just thought I'd ask on here to see if it's a known problem. Rear shaft bearings have been done in the past and this does seem to be near side front. The noise is related to road speed not engine/gearbox speed. Btw, applying the brakes makes no difference to the noise so unlikely to be a brake problem.
  6. Sounds like a bad earth. Don't understand how easystart helps a non cranking engine.Just read again, as per previous responder what engine, year, etc.
  7. Doing a quick search on Autotrader, the price difference between the "budget" cars and LR are not that great, surprisingly. I've got a 52 plate Santa Fe which is the wife's car/family car and an 02 Freelander which is my car/shooting wagon. I'd rate the Santa Fe as more solidly built, we went to Germany in it last year. It's also bigger and more comfortable. The FL is better technically and off road but bits like electric windows, sunroof c/l etc. are poor. And the price of parts....
  8. With that mileage it can't be worth more than around £6000. Depends what your Porche is worth. I'd be looking at a younger/ lower mileage Hyundai/Kia/Nissan etc.
  9. Thanks for the info guys. Mine is not showing any symptoms of VCU problems yet but I was considering preventative surgery. Think I'll hang fire for a while and keep a close eye on the situation. The £320 includes bearings and donating the replaced VCU to Bell for reconditioning.
  10. Sorry for reviving an old thread but my TD4 also does this after hard acceleration. Feels like a speed limiter for 3-4 seconds then pulls away as normal. The car drives fine the rest of the time.
  11. Hi guys. Recently bought a Freelander TD4 with 100,000 on the clock. Whilst it has no symptoms of a problem with the VCU, I'm thinking of having it changed. Bell Engineering offer a recon unit fitted for £320 including bearings. Does anyone have any knowledge of this company? The price seems very reasonable.
