A Q7 sure is huge on the outside, not helped by the plump design. Some years ago I was loading up next to a Q7, first gen I think, and I was surprised there wasn't more room in the inside. All a bit more curved, lower roof, more plastic taking up space and to be fair I have the back seats completely removed in my Range Rover which also helps. But compared to a P38, a D3/4 is noticeably bigger on the inside, so a different league to the Q7.

Fair point.. I might have to go check a few out. D3 D4 and Q7

    cheers for reply

Are you sleeping inside your 110 or just using it to lug camping gear? If sleeping inside, I think you'll find the Q7, X5 etc disappointingly small on the inside! The Disco 3/4 is huge, and they're nice to churn away the miles, but then it does become more about getting there rather than the drive itself (which is always an adventure by itself in a Defender). You won't spend as much time working on a Disco, but you're likely to spend considerably more money, both in parts and professional help (diagnostics for one).

    I'd vote Defender. šŸ˜‰

young one sleeps inside. Not looked yet but q7 must be large inside ? Bloody thing is huuuge.

totally agree about the defender though, not knowing if you will make it there is half the adventure.

done nc500 couple years ago and apart from a burst rad that I fixed roadside it was faultless.

    could I do that on a d4 or x5 ? šŸ˜–

Although I have driven quite a few miles in D3 & D4 I will not buy one.

I have a OneTen that does most things but in the end it is a "basic" vehicle.

A D2 has arrived here and will need serious work before it goes on the road but doable.

Does most things the OneTen does but in greater comfort and still sort of DIY friendly.

Obviously, there are a lot of D3 & D$ people that will claim otherwise but for me they're a generation too far.

I did think about a D2 but I think I just want newerĀ

110 Is deffo basic but I have upgraded some bits, c/locking is a must

  4. Appreciate the reply Stephen thanks.

I have met with Ed a couple years ago now. It was his info that helped me to install Range Rover sport seats. ( a mission in itself and still not properly wired in)

the seats are super comfy but as I get older and more rounded itā€™s the small things like elbow space etc that annoy me.

    Ā

I do still love the 110 but due to a new role at work I find I have less time now days to ā€œtinkerā€

if I am completely honest though I think I agree, Iā€™m better off keeping the 110.

just needed others to tell me šŸ˜

so itā€™s 2-0 for the defender at the minuteĀ

  5. Cheers for reply

As my bones get more achey I guess Iā€™m looking for more comfort ultimately. Looking to spend less time under the truck and more time inside it.Ā
Rain and winds ideally kept to the outside. Less noise.

still want to load it up for camping but would like to make it a more pleasurable drive to, from and around.

    Ā

forgot to add this isnā€™t a daily driver. More a toy / weekend thing.

  6. Advice please..

currently own a 110csw but slowing falling out of love. Been superb for a good 7years now and used mainly for camping trips. But after the NC500 Iā€™m considering a swap to a disco 3 or 4 or maybe even something like an Audi q7, x5 Touareg ?? Undecided .. apologies for mentioning the others

so for camping, who would go for what.???

I love the defender for how cheap and easy most fixes are but anything newer scares me a little to be honest. No where near as many enthusiasts as LR owners, but even newer discos scare me with all the electricary stuff and general prices for repairs.

on my200tdi I can climb in the engine bay with some spannerā€™s and fix things.

Loving the disco 4 for looks and space.. just need others to talk me into it.. or out of as the case may beĀ

    cheers all

  7. I made a side addition out of 25mm box and the push in connector thingys..covered in a waterproof and wind proof very tough material.. Iā€™ll dig out a link to it..lasted well for a good few years, even the NC500.Ā
I then changed to a Vango side awning for a more ā€œproā€ look.Ā
I went with the poled version but now wish I hadnā€™t been so tight and gone for the pump up air version.

good thing with the Vango is that you can leave kit in it, detach from vehicle and clear off for the day in the truck.

As someone else mentioned, the front radius arms have a lot of roll resistance as standard - and indeed, the front ARB is fairly weak compared to the back.

In terms of handling, increasing the front anti-roll leads to understeer.Ā  Back leads to oversteer - so you can tune the vehicles cornering / drifting behaviour with the ARBs.

I found my 110 (doublecab with heavy rear springs) without a rear ARB had a tendancy to understeer in the wet - which personally, I don't like!Ā  Adding a rear bar only, made a very positive difference - to what I consider almost perfect - where it will drift sideways and you can modulate the under / over steer with the throttle once the wheels are spinning.Ā  That means you can still steer (with the throttle) if it drifts.Ā  Other 110 models will behave differently, because of different loading characteristics / centre of mass.

I built an unlockable front bar for it (using a D3 ACE Bar) - but when it was locked, it induced way too much understeer.Ā  I could still control it, but didn't like the handling as much as without.

Adapting a D3 ACE bar for the rear might be a good option, if you can't justify the X-Deflex.Ā  The hydraulic actuator it uses is similar to a Helac

    HELAC rotary actuator

Actuator.Ā  The swept volume on both sides is identical (unlike a cylinder).Ā  It means that you can run it closed loop with just a ball valve to switch it on & off.Ā  Purging all the air out of it is tricky but not rocket science.Ā  I used a solenoid operated spool valve on mine.Ā  I picked up the ACE bar itself at Newbury for aot Ā£10.

Iā€™ll be honest I couldnā€™t ever see me drifting in my 110.Ā
I would end up spending me money on new pants instead of partsĀ

    Great info though šŸ‘

UJs have to be a prime suspect. Sometimes you have to take the props off to check, or greasing them can sometimes stop it temporarily. I tracked one down once by feeling UJ's after a run - I burnt myself on the faulty one. Or they may show some slack when you rock the vehicle.

I like that check.. good idea. Iā€™ll try a run out today then see what I can feel.

Pretty sure I doneĀ all of them about 2yrs ago,Ā very limited mileage since then (probably about 300 per year) except for the nc500 run which added about 2100 just last week.

    appreciate the quick reply šŸ‘

  10. Anyone offer anything ??

got a noise appeared on way back from nc500. Sounds like wheel bearing but had all 4 off the ground and nothing seems to move or jiggle around

noise seems to appear between 50&55 then disappears, fine upto 70 but then again between 70&72 and fine again after that .. not that it goes much further

diff oils are looking fine. Not checked both boxes yet .. but no obvious leaks ( unless they are empty of course) lol

quick google and someone mentions prop weights or Ujā€™s ??

    anyoneĀ

    thanks troops

Massive improvement front and rear on aĀ 90. I drove a non ARB equipped 90 the other day and it was like a jelly on wheels.

    Appreciate the info fellas..Ā

jelly on wheels sounds spot on.. I think I may invest. Pretty sure the chassis mounts are there.

    cheers

  12. Cheers fellas.. all back home again now after 2100miles. No more issues. Apart from a funny noise when at 70mph. Iā€™ll look into that next week.

forgot to take pic of rad damage but it was basically split where the red pen is in pic below.

The plastic here is about 5mm thick so I would of thought a hose or something else would of given up first.

    maybe manufacturing defect.

    hey ho

    cheersĀ

  13. Apologies for delay .. yep got it sorted. Loch carron garage services were very helpful. Part turned out to be 4 days away. Kids werenā€™t happy. I managed to source a part myself then the garage sent 1 of their guys to collect.. 3.5hrs later it was here. Fitted myself in half hour then back on with the trip.. kids happy again. So far temp not gone above 90

    Cheers fellas

I thought the same thing. Be interesting to see how they perform/wear.Ā

Thatā€™s all 3 of us then lol

ill keep eyes on wear and let ya know this time next year. Reviews / tests I read up on suggest they perform better. But I think Iā€™ll be the judge.

What offset are those wheels? That looks to be a serious amount of dish!

cheers mate. I love the way it looks now. Original wheels that came with it were boosts. But the fella I got it from called me about a yearĀ after the sale and said I had forgot to take the mud wheels and tyres that were part of the sale. Very honest.

these are the wheels that are on it now, but they had malatesta kaiman tyres on. Muds,, and although I couldnā€™t fault the way they behaved.. even in snow,Ā I eventually succumb to the noise levels. Must be getting old .

    Ā

so inĀ shortā€¦. I have no idea of the offset.

there is a 30mm spacer on aswell.

    Ā

I know I know about axle stresses etc. But if I didnā€™t spend my money and time on this thing I would be at a festival with the wife today watching Whitney Houston and some other clown šŸ¤”Ā

    Ā

cheers all for the assistance as alwaysĀ
