  1. It's a 98 P38 Signature. And my key I'm guessing it the older style, three buttons, lock, unlock and the release to flick the key blade out with a little red light on the top right hand corner
  2. I only have one key for me Range Rover I want a second one so that if I loose or break the one I currently have I can still at least get into the car. Called the mean stealer in Leicester and got a chap who wasn't 100% helpful and said he could only get me "key 3" if the key I had was "key 1" being as the 10 year old white label is no longer on the back of the key I couldnt tell him much more than its a flick out blade with a remote fob. Basically what I wanna know is: -Is going to the dealer with my only key and ordering a new one same as for £126.52 my best option? -Can I just head up into town and get a new blade cut, or are even the blades alone a dealer job? -Is the key or fob coded to the door or central locking as well as the ignition. -Can I go into town and get a blade cut and mounted on a (for example only) ford key fob and use it to open the car instead of paying for a key and remote fob for a high price at the dealer thats only gonna hang on a wall at home and never used unless I loose the orginal?
  3. Thanks for the suggestions, It was about a 230mile distance so I'm not too sure the RAC would have been keen on taking me home, plus they might not have fallen for it if they had noticed the car wasnt taxed or insured. Anyway, no worrys, its here now safe and sound and I was smiling like a cheshire cat as the lorry driver unloaded my new pride and joy for me. Very nice bloke too. "Nationdrive" I think its safe to say I recommend them :: thumbs up ::
  4. When I first went looking for a P38 I got a mass of contrasting and conflicting opinions. All I can tell you is what I've learnt from my own experience having only just brought the one I thought to be perfect for me. When looking at one your considering on buying check around the back end and under the interior carpets, if there are signs of rust then don't pay big money for it or walk away. I was told that by a co-worker who's done weilding on a few of them and an MOT examiner who's a mate of mine. The V8's seem to have problems when they've been overheated, from what I've been told they are an alluminium head and body with steel liners. When this combination is overheated the engine tends to be duff and apparently the best move to make is just to replace the entire lump with a reconditioned one. Look for oil leaks, if theres oil around the back of the engine in one case with one p38 I nearly brought, then you might have a rear crankcase gasket leaking, to replace the gasket in question on the particular car would have involved having the gearbox dropped at a cost of £705 according to a landrover dealership. If your after an LPG fitted on go for a multi point system and make sure its been certified, the single point systems are cheaper and have smaller tolertances in setting up, causing them to go wrong easier, I've been told in some cases they can be set up wrong, blow back and smash the air intake box to pieces. It seems a case of when you get a good one you get a great one and when you get a bad one you get a really naff one, I think its also fair to say you in most cases get what you pay for. With that in mind I can give you the number of a garage in Hinckley who specialise in 4x4's who will sell you a top notch p38, his prices arnt the lowest but if needed he will put a freshly reconditioned engine in for you for £1500 and gaurentee it for 12months. He'll also fit a multipoint LPG system on it for you for £1000 i think it was... He had some very tidy cars on his lot. I've been told to keep away from the special editions and to unhook the tailgate from the central locking to avoid problems with the central locking, but I havn't seen any reason to take those suggestions seriously. I would lookout for mainly, air suspention issues, rust around the back end and the suspention and overheating problems in the V8's However all this is all I can remember off the top of my head at the moment so it might not all be 100% accurite but I for one don't "need" a p38, but I love them and have dreamed about owning one for a long time, and now I do
  5. Pah! grumble grumble ruddy rip off, grumble... Well its not too bad I guess considering a coded key for my MKI fiat punto was £60 and that doesnt come with a remote for central locking (not much point if it did, the punto hasnt got central locking! ) I've never been in the situation where I've lost the only set of keys I have to my car and don't really ever want to be so I guess its just a small cost when compared to the hassle that could occour in the future. I thank you both for the replys :: bows ::
  6. The next time some smart a&$£ reffers to this hobby as just a bunch of overgrown kids driving around a muddy field for kicks I'll reffer them to this forum and thread. Some top notch shots there guys, really gets me exited thinking about getting into it at the same level some of you lot are. I think for the time being though I'll just watch everyone else play, as my bank balence slowly starts rising again.
  7. Hi all, Got my P38 here safe and sound, however it only has one key/remote with it. At some point in the next few weeks I'll be taking a trip to the dealership to have a 2nd one cut. Does anyone know how much I should expect to be charged for this? Any ideas how much cheaper it is to get just a key without the remote for the central locking? Ta,
  8. Thanks Steve, had a quick word with Ultima sports and put in a good word for you, but they said they couldnt offer just a delivery service thanks anyway. Nationdrive have just quoted me £220+vat, can't really shun that as it seems reasonable enough, so Nationdrive it is, plus they said they can pick it up tomorrow.
  9. Just been browsing through google search results and came across A1transport.co.uk who have quoted £283.23. Seems like a good price but I'll keep shopping around a bit just in case there is someone cheaper, or generally giving better quality for money.
  10. Hi all, hope your all well and the christmas season isn't stressing you out. I brought myself a new car last night and due to it not being taxed yet I need to find a transporter firm in the Kent area that will deliver the car to Leicestershire for a fair price. Does anyone know of such a firm? I have a low loader that can be sent down to Kent specially to pick up the car but it won't be avalible untill later in the week and I don't really want the car sitting around long, as I imagine the seller is keen to get his money and finnishe the transaction. Thanks all
  11. Why not tack it with TIG to begin with? Its surprising how much the smallest amount of dirt (or even marker pen ink) will effect the weild. One of my favorites is when you finnish the run lift the mask to see the charred half of a moth in the weild after having seen that irrisistable bright shiny light.
  12. Are there any 4.0L petrol models with manual transmissions out there? How common are they?
  13. I see, BMW it is then. Perhaps fitting a 300tdi would be a fun project to attempt some time in the future. A good friend of mine assures me they are fantastic engines, fit in most things and are just about bomb proof, he's got one in his land rover and swears by it. Thanks Escape
  14. I see, what is the alternative engine to the BMW? and is it better than the BMW engine?
  15. New to this so be nice, My plan is to continue gathering funds and early next year buy a Range Rover DSE, with manual transmission and the 2.5L 300TDI lump. Looking for a clean tidy black one to use as a daily run around but I will be getting it a little dirty from time to time. I guess is have a few questions whats your opinion of the DSE? I've been told that the 300TDI is a better option than the BMW engine, agree? Are they expencive to run and maintain? What is the avalibility of parts and their cost like? Any idea how much it would cost for a total respray? Ta muchly peoples.
