  1. Now that the dust has settled from the Borders HIllrally, I can report that we had a brilliant time, but mixed success.

The event, although having a large contingent of gravel tracks is pretty tough. The off road sections are some of the roughest I have known, a mixture of big rocks, small rocks, more rocks, water and mud. And the tracks were very, very fast, but slippery.

Unfortunately it was the rocks that put an end to our fun. After puncturing on the first stage helping out a fellow competitor we were then on the back foot throughout needing to play catch up. Although we set some fantastic times, including a number in the top 5 it wasn't enough and in the end the transfer box cried enough after we clouted a particularly nasty stone.

The remains of the Transfer Box.

We put in a flying time in the following stage after holing the transfer box. There was a bit of a vibration which started at about 50mph, but started to clear at 75! But on finding this at service and with 4 or 5 more similar stages left to run we reluctantly called it a day.

We will be back next year. There are more photos, the complete event report and an excellent bit of video from the event at http://www.FriesianRacing.co.uk

  2. ^^^

Yep, serps seem to be vanishjed the min I started looking

Hentry - is that a PAS Mount (I have now) or PAS Pump (I need :D ) ??

    Nige

I was thinking mount. I do have some PAS pumps, they all work, but all have issues, so I doubt you will be interested. One has a bent shaft the other is noisy if I remember correctly.

  3. Changing to 16" wheels will make a huge difference to ride quality. We did this on my dad's one and it has been a great success.

As has already been mentioned the independent front end on the Shogun will be considerably better than a Land Rover in some situations

  4. I think the diamonds are out of fashion because the racing scene who used them most have moved on, partly through fashion, but mainly through regulation. The AWDC and BCCC have ruled these tyres out and I believe that NORC are not far behind. You must still be able to get them, though.

I like the look of the new BFG muds, but haven't yet tried them yet. I think you'll struggle to get them in your budget, though.

  5. I'm certainly not going to argue with such an authority as Vic or his son, but I genuinely didn't think that was the case. I bought some homologated in-date harnesses to compete in France where they are mandatory as well as for international events in the UK, but I believe my old belts remain fine for club events here, right up to National A level.

My understanding seems to tally with the blue book snippet above. Rally events are different and do require in date harnesses. Note that the snippet posted here is only the general harness reg and needs to be read in conjunction with the technical part of the off road regs.

  6. In my mind for off road speed events you really want 75mm harnesses. Makes sense to get FIA but don't necessarily need to be in-date in the UK. One thing I would avoid is buying second hand, you never really know the history and as it says belts stretch in an accident!

  7. I bought a cheap alloy one from Costco when I spotted it on offer and with the intention of only using it on an events 'cause it was much lighter for the van, but its so good it has rather taken over as the workshop jack of choice.

  8. I was going to suggest, Neil, that one of the difficulties with promoting this is that no-one really knows what it is. I think your post makes it very clear! Well done.

In true Dragon's Den style - "Just so you know where I am - I'm not fitting a winch so I'm out!"

But in reality I was never really in. I think this is a great concept and will continue to watch with interest.

  9. On the other side of the coin - if the events were similar or just marginally more hard-core than Sidbury you could bolster the field with some speed event guys. I came to watch the safari and helped clear up whilst you guys were setting up the XTC and I thought it would have been rather fun to have a go!

  10. The trouble with the special tool is that it is a 'once in a blue moon' job and often not planned ahead so the alternative is that you buy the special tool on a 'just in case' basis and lose or lend it before it gets used.

I think that is the point - if its a 'once in a blue moon' job for you, then just use spanners its not that much hassle, but if you use your car hard like I do, or work on a few of them then it is worth while. That said I use a modded 9/16" 3/8" socket and a wobble bar.

I probably have the propshafts on and off on average three or four times per year on the racer, notwithstanding working on the tow vehicle.

  11. Whilst your under the dizzy cap have a look to see whether there is any play in the rotor arm contact. If in doubt change it for a genuine LR bagged Lucas one. Much more expensive than the aftermarket Lucas version, but much better quality.
