  1. I have a dark blue td5 auto I would sell, but it has a few niggly bits that need doing. It's a Y reg, GS model with 137k miles, air suspension but no ACE. Climate control, cruise control etc, all working fine.

It does however have a leaky power steering pump and a rattle at 2300 revs, and ofcourse, it has a leaky sunroof. apart from that, it is a really clean nice looking disco 2.

It's in Horsham west Sussex and I'm open to offers.

    Cheers,

    Curly

  2. i just took the head off the 2.5td, and when i seperated the head from the block, there was loads of oil on the gasket, and on the mating faces of the head and block on the side where the push rods come from.

and there's a build up of crusty black/brown sludge on 3 of the pistons, and some of the valves.the bores look suprisingly shiney and scratch free too, which is supprising..

i squirted some GT-85 into the bores to free up some of the slime, about 5mm deep, but it flowed past the rings and dissapeared in about 5 mins or less, should it be able to do that, or is that a sign of rubbish rings?

  3. I would bet a lot of money that it is only the valve guides, unlikely to be rings if it does not smoke under load and breath heavily, unlikely to be turbo if intermittent smoke although possible. Turbo shaft up and down play is normal as the shaft runs in double floating bronze bearings but end to end play is not, easy to check.

ah, this sounds a bit more like what i wanted to hear!

reckon i'll pop the head off, and put some new valve seals in and see how it goes. if that doesn't help, i'll buy 20 ltrs of the stop smoke treacle oild from halfrauds and use that untill i can afford to put a 200tdi in it.

    thanks for all your help!

  4. thats what i thought..

why cant there be any cars that i actually want to buy when i want to buy them?

and why are there so many of them about when i come to sell mine??

i do really like it, but as i said in my first post, i just dont have any time at all to tinker with it and make it work properly without smoking me out!

anyone got an old 200 tdi they fancy fitting into my landy for free in the next day or 2??

  5. just thought i'd get an idea what my 110 is worth, because i'm considering selling it due to lack of time to tinker etc..

    its a 1989 2.5td 110 utility,

good chassis and bulkhead, small hole in the passenger footwell, colway tyres on modulars in 90% new cond, swing away rear wheel holder, top of the range mobile storage solutions cubby box, citreon BX seats, steering guard, diff guard, 2" lift, kenlowe fan, snorkel, and a few other bits and bobs.

it does smoke quite alot on startup and when i take my foot off the accelerator, but still drives ok, and pulls like a 2.5td should do!

front wings are quite dented, it has a spare set of doors in really good condition, and the same colour, new front outer wings, one same colour, and one white

generally speaking, as landrovers go, its not a really bad one. its a bit ugly, but its pretty solid.

    let me know your thoughts!

    cheers,

  6. check if you have 12v at the small wire on the alternator, and that your charge light comes on with the ignition.

my landy had a similar problem a while back and it turned out that the charge light wire had broken, and it wasn't charging at all, and it took me 3 poxy alternators to work it out!

thinking about it, my alternator only charges at 13.8v - 14v anyway..

where are you measuring the voltage? at the battery or the alternator?

  7. oh dear..

not much puffs out the oil cap, so i was hoping that a set of new stem seals and i could use it for a few more months..

i'm putting about 5 ltrs of oil in the engine every time i fill it up with diesel, well 3/4 fill it other wise it sloshes out the filler cap.. HE HE

i'm pretty stumped with it at the moment, cos i need to use it everyday to get to work, and pick up my boy from nursery, so i need some sort of quick fix!

    any ideas?

  8. hi there,

my old 2.5td smokes like a chimney on startup and if i take my foot off between gear changes, and if i have the throttle at half mast for a while in 3rd.. it seems to run clean if i am going for gold, but not sure if its just that the smoke is being blown away by the speed..

i was just wondering if there was a way of telling if its the piston rings, and or the valve stem seals, because if its the latter, i'll fix it, but if its the rings, i wont bother..

also, if i take the oil cap off, it puffs a little bit out of there too..

    Cheers,

  9. i did a search for this and the closest i found was the defender diesel to v8 post, but it didn't really answer my question!

i have a 3.5 efi range rover with an auto box and lpg, and a defender with a pretty knackered and smokey 2.5 td.

i was wondering how much of a job it would be to take out the old 2. td and box, and replace it with the engine and box etc from the rangie?

any how to's or 'i tried that and it wasn't worth it' would be much appreciated!

  10. Err... No... why? The seats fold into the middle such that both rear passengers have their feet on the floor.

So the seats fold down and are completely off the wheel arch then?

I thought they were half on and half off. Does that mean that if they are both down, one on each side, there's no gap in between them to walk through?
