  1. Jez - what ZF did you use when you experimented with Isuzu 2.8 and auto... was it from a V8 or a Tdi?

I ask because the gear shift patterns are different between the V8 and Tdi ZF's and I would have thought a genuine Tdi ZF Auto might go well with the Isuzu?

Hard to find a Tdi Auto though...

  2. how easy/cheaply can they be modified to give an onboard air system.

I think Pauls/Less are great but a bit beyond me, whereas an aircon one may be far cheaper/easier prospect.

If you do it Tony I have a spare air compressor from a 3.5 V8 EFI Aircon in my spares bin... £10.

  3. >> sell the 88 inch Hybrid with the 200Tdi and box, caged ready to go once the running gear/suspension was fitted

Do you mean someone would have to collect the car without axles?

Les, why oh why are you doing this? Just sell it complete and start with a blank canvas or figure out a way to squeeze an Auto box in there.

  4. So it'll be in by the 2nd January 06 then Eh ??? :lol::P

He's as bad as I am...

Adrian - dunno to be honest, but Jez (dollythelw) would if you ask him - he's done it. My C&P adapter mates to an LT77... I assume the bellhousing bolt pattern would be the same or similar but we really shouldn't guess at this stuff. Maybe a call to C&P would be best... anyway, let's talk tomorrow night.

  5. Im assuming that the Isuzu lump is a lot smaller that a 200tdi ??

I've had quite a few Tdi's and now an Isuzu 2.8... The Isuzu is most definitely smoother, seems more powerful, more willing to rev. It's also a very compact engine.. very, very short - I can get inside the engine bay with my engine!

Spares are no problem to get and there are plenty of scrapper Trooper's about for little money. But you will need a conversion plate/kit... my C&P complete kit cost over £400.... and that raises the budget somewhat.

  6. I'll find out if he's still got them

Ouch! Seems like the same happened the last time I went to a pay and play day with you!

I have a genuine 61k mileage ZF Auto for £275 if you need one - complete from bellhousing to handbrake, etc, came from a rolled 1998 3.9 Disco with full LRSH.

  7. :D

HA HA!!!! That's me! I know Darren well but he doesn't know my eBay ID so I sent him a numpty question as a wind-up... and yes, he responded!

Suggestion to all LR4x4.com wind-up merchants: send him complete numpty questions on eBay such as:

"Can I lower the suspension on this and will it affect my insurance?"

"Do you have any door tops to go with the car?"

"How does this differ from a TD5 90 - I hear they are rather good and yours seems older but more expensive?"

    And my favourite:

"I have a strict budget of £26,000 - what is your 'buy it now' price?"

  8. >> jap stuff is no more reliable than green oval products.

It is in my experience. See my earlier post in this thread.. 1994 Isuzu Trooper.. hate to say it, but far, far better than our previous 1998 Disco, my 1994 Rangie Tdi/Auto and 2 previous 1992 Tdi Disco's.

Some parts are more expensive than LR but service items aren't... and besides, Jap stuff doesn't go wrong so often. I've had to replace starter motors, alternators, diff's, halfshafts, PAS pumps, water pump gaskets, door locks, alpine window seals etc on the Tdi Discos/Rangies we've owned.

All I've had to replace on wifey's Isuzu is the fuel in the tank!

  9. Hi Les,

Sorry but the ZF Auto sold a while ago. I can tell you that it's 103cm long, from front face of engine backplate to the rear face of the handbrake drum where the propshaft bolts onto it. The engine backplate for a 200Tdi is 3cm deep and the rest of the stuff (belhhousing, ZF Auto, transfer box plus handbrake drum combined) is 100cm, making 103cm total.

Also, here's the list of what I had, which is everything you need:

    - ZF 4spd Auto from a Tdi, including bellhousing & torque converter

    - Transfer box

    - Handbrake assembly

    - Starter ring/flexplate

    - Oil cooler, pipework, unions, various clips etc

    - Gear shifter & cable, top cap, button, slide selector, spring, knob, rollerdeck, trim, outer cable clamp, swan neck, hi/lo & diff lock linkage

    - Auto oil filler neck, dipstick

    - Engine backplate (to fit to a 200Tdi)

    - Gearbox wiring loom

    - Tdi diesel injector pump bracket for Auto, plus kickdown cable/assembly

I think Will or someone suggested buying an Auto 300Tdi Disco complete... beware, as all Auto Discxo's/Rangies came with the fly-by-wire/ECU controlled diesel injector pump... not the mechanical type fitted to Defender 300Tdi's. Unless you want a lot of extra wiring, plus difficult-to-find Tdi ECU's, steer clear!

I hate to say it, but this is why my comp[lete "Auto installation kit" was a bargain and you should have bought it!!! It took me almost a year to source everything required.

Alternatively, track down that 200Tdi Auto Disco that I once owned and then Mark90 owned... that was one of very few genuine factory 200Tdi/Autos and did not have an ECU-controlled injection pump. Maybe buy the whole car, rip off the bodywork and build a roll cage/panels around that. It'd be a 100-inch 200Tdi Auto. It was a darned good, solid car too!

  10. What's wrong with the Autotrader?

My wife's Isuzu Bighorn (Trooper Jap import) is faster, handles better, smoother, more reliable and far better built than the succession of Discos and Rangies she's had before. In fact, her 1994 Isuzu is way better than the 1998 Disco 300Tdi she was driving around in.

As you know, I love my Land Rovers, but don't start thinking there's nothing better for gawd sake! Half the fun of owning a Landie is putting it back together with better stuff when bits fall off it... but that's what you want from a weekend toy - not a daily driver.
