  1. Nothing wrong with an 80 leaf sprung!!! I still have mine that i used to do CCV with - My main point is that if Dorky is at the beginning of building a Comp Car he needs to be aware of all sides of the coin!!! I started off comping an 88" with V8 and whilst it was OK and got me into the sport and we did CCV with it aswell as Comp , I soon saw the advantages of the longer wheel base. I now run the TD5 107, not because I wanted to get into the top 5, but because I wanted to have fun in a truck that is a bit different and when going fast is a real dream to drive - espicially on loose gravel and tight hairpin bends.

Which ever way you go - lets see some pics and hope the car will be ready soon -

    PS Go Diesel!!!!

  2. I think you will regret going 88 - I am not just saying that because I have a 107 - the extra long wheelbase does make the car handle MUCH better for speed andf if ALRC is your main events base then go long - you can alway chop it back.

If you go 88 now there is no stretch potential and whilst it is a comp car, its only advantage is that it could be a half decent trial vehicle aswell.

Speak to QT as they can build you a long wheel base frame that will not be affected if you decide to shorten it in the future

Alternatively speak with Malc Whitbread - he built mine and has a wealth of experience with 88 and longer base vehicles.

  3. I have replaced this pipe several times and have also temp repaired when the pipes were not available. The temp repair cars are still going strong - get a short piece of rubber fuel hose and 2 pipe clips and cut out the hole at the bent and replace with rubber hose - will probably outlast the original

  4. My co driver/ navigator was a chap called Mark Burton - ex Royal Engineers - fits a mean kitchen and is a whizz on the maps!!! He does the nav - I just drive!!!

I would like to express my thanks to the BAMA organising team for another excellent event - if these become more popular, this will encourage more events to be run - we used to run 8-10 events a year in thier hayday run by servicemen on a whole variety of training areas and also on the public road and green lanes - all with the emphasis on navigation - I remember ROADMASTER used to be a 2.5 day event with 60 cars!!! with 130-150 miles of pure off road navigation across Salsibury Plain in mid November!!!

Speaking to a few crews on Sunday, this type of event makes a welcome change to pure off roading and challenge events and gives a chance to do some thinking aswell as some driving !!! Hope we can do some more of these - see you all at RICKSHAW RAMBLE BRAMLEY!!!

  5. Sorry guys for not keeping you all up to date.

Sadly, following further chasing for an alternative date, it appears that the military training areas we wanted to use were not available and frankly did not like the idea of "fast driving"!!! - Training area rules dictate 25mph speed limits.

I have followed up recently with my contact and hope is not all lost but no 2011 will have to be an XTC free zone.

There is however 2012 and the King of the VALLEYS!!!

  6. I have been working on Disco 3 vehicle now for over 4 years, before that I was an enthusiast and D2 was my limit of capability. I have done most things on D3 and will be lifting a body soon to change some air con pipes.

Turbos are not a body off job and engines out( TDV6 only) are the exception to the rule

I have to say that they are really not as bad as you hear. The mechanicals and routine maintenance brakes, clutches, oil changes etc are no more difficult than D2.

However the electronics do causes problems for the DIY mechanic - all I can say is find a good independant LR specialist and strike up a health relationship with them and I am sure you would be surprised how few times you need the computer!!!

PS The D2 will be around for a lot longer than the D1 given how well the body survives and I do believe that the D2 will probably outlast the D3 in the long run as an enthusiast car.

  7. From my experience of about 6 D2s with ACE, leave well alone unless you are topping up regularly to stem a serious leak, getting the orange or red lights on the dash or the pump has seized.

It is possible to do a response test to see if all components are working but if you disturb/ undo any pipes, the system you will have to rebleed the system and that is a not a 10 minute job.

When it is working it is a great system but the pipes rust and electronic sensors have pressure and direction problems - when it goes wrong the cheapest option may be to have the system disabled.

  8. I agree - the KOV terraim will be HARD, but any car could win it - trialer, comp motor or challenge car - obviously they all will need a winch. I think this will prove to be the return of the XTC idea in a more arduous format that because of the distance involved will really sort out truck reliability, team work and sense of humours!!!

Looking forward to it - not sure if the 107" will!!!

  9. According to the technical specification for this engine, any more than 70 psi ( 4.887 BAR ) variance in pressures between cylinders is outside manufacturers tolerances. The results above show anything up to 10 BAR difference - therefore there is a problem with the engine and its ability to create sufficient pressure and that has nothing to do with fueling.

  10. I have a customer with same problem - have changed tie rod engine mount as it was worn and have removed whole rear prop - car is coming in next week for both front drive shafts to be inspected and if necessary swapped with known good units.

When driven vibration is worst at 50-70mph and is through body with gear stick moving like made but not on overrun

  11. Like I said above - we did this as part of diagnostic work to identify a problem on a d2 td5 - not to produce a hand throttle - if you want a hand throttle for a td5 then look at the utility board Defenmder 110 with hydraulic winches and how they are set up.
