  1. No worries Steve,

    Mine's a 1992 200tdi. If you push the leaver down it should be intermittent and this is the setting I use most often. The first notch up is medium which is too fast for light rain and spray. the top notch is fast and is just unnecessary for day to day use. It is the intermittent setting that I have lost and it is now the same speed as the medium setting.

    If I didn't have intermittent I would convert it as per Western's suggestion. I find it to be the most useful setting.

  2. mounting onto defender bonnet, not a good idea if you off road, or travel on dirt (corrugated) roads . They tend to split as lighter construction than earlier bonnets.

    A 275 section on the bonnet, tends to get into eyeline quite a lot, esp if you are used to driving with nothing on bonnet. As previously stated 130 roof will need strengthening to carry spare, also puts quite a weight up high. JMHOFE

    yeah I've heard this so I'd probably stick it in the back if I'm off road/greenlaning. I've heard there are ways of reinforcing the bonnet but I guess it means adding more weight to the truck so not worthwhile.

    not a problem about the eyeline with me, I'm pretty tall and have tried putting my spare on the bonnet to make sure I could see ok.

    How long have you been owned by your landy? I've had mine for just over a year now, not learning as quickly as I'd planned to to be honest but that's due to a lack of time more than lack of enthusiasm. In fact Ive done more damage than good so far!!

  4. Recently the slow setting on my windscreen wipers became the same speed as the middle setting so now I have two speeds: quick and very quick. also if you turn the wipers off at the wrong point during the cycle they get stuck and don't finish the cycle.

    anyone else had this problem?

  5. The clutch mechanism, wouldn't put air in the system - I would look at the slave cylinder first. If you have any sign of fluid weeping down the clutch pedal, or under the bonnet from the master cylinder location, then that would be the culprit. Stiff pedal could be a few things - pedal pivot shaft siezing, slave cylinder piston sticking in the bore, or thrust bearing binding on the guide sleeve inside the bellhousing.

    thanks Les, though it should have read the clutch mechanism is ALSO probably knackered (in relation to the stiffness of the clutch).

    Not sure why air is getting in to be honest, the slave cylinder seems fine (although only by my newbie assessment). No fluid down the clutch pedal or under the bonnet either. Thanks for the advice about the things that could be causing the stiff pedal. If I get brave enough I will take it apart to have a look. Might be a bit beyond my skill at the moment, have only just mastered the basics ;)

    if it ones of those three things, would I still require a full clutch change or just replacement parts?

  6. Ended up getting a new track rod put on but it was still pulling to the right.

    I had a go at fixing the tracking myself and I'm quite pleased with the results. It still needs a touch of steer to the left if there is a bit of camber on the road but it is much improved. going to have the steering looked at soon I think, I have a bit of play on the steering wheel and am not convinced my front wheels are properly aligned. they seem to look like this \----/ although (obviously) not that bad.

    first things first tho and that is a new clutch. my clutch pedal is sooo stiff it's rediculous! I keep getting air in my clutch fluid and have had to bleed it twice recently (which has actually made the clutch pedal a bit lighter for about 10 mins. then it goes really hard again!) My local Landy repair chap said my clutch mechanism is probably a bit knackered and will need a new clutch soon so I'm saving my pennies.

  7. I'm sure my 90 has a sticker on the fusebox cover (just in front of the gear leaver) saying not to exceed 15mph when diff lock is engaged. I did once for about half a mile without realising I was still in difflock. The car was feeling like it was really struggling to move. I started to panic thinking I had destroyed my old girl and imagining the worse. I got 2 miles down the road before realising I still had the handbreak on too ha ha :rolleyes:

    i'm due to change my oil on my 200tdi Defender 90 (1992) and a friend has given me 2 x 5l Carlube 10w40 mineral for free as he has no need for it.

    Now I know it's not ideal but do you reckon it will be ok to use for the next 6k or so?

    My concerns are it says here http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?product=62 that it is suitable for modern engines that require a lighter oil. Also, while it says on the back of the tub 'suitable for petrol and diesel engines both n/a and turbo" Carlube do a Turbo Diesel specific product http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?product=65

    do you think I should just splash the cash and get some proper 15w40 for diesel engines or will I be ok to use this for a while? Free oil is not to be sniffed at these days especially as Millers (which I normally use) seems to be becoming more and more expensive every time I buy it!

  9. Cheers guys. There's loads of good stuff on here and I'm sure the tech section will come in handy again and again and again.

    My Landy started pulling to the right quite a lot yesterday. Track rod is a bit out of shape, it's obviously taken a bit of a whack. My wheels are slightly out of line but can't get it seen to til January now. Bumma :(

  10. Interesting reading this as I had to bleed my clutch this week for the first time and didn't have any assistance either. I had shed all my fluid trying to drive my Landy out of a deep ditch at the weekend :rolleyes:

    I had no pressure on the clutch pedal at all. I used a piece of tubing with a slit in it over the bleed nipple, topped up my fluid and pumped the clutch several times. I managed to get pressure back in the system. I've not done a great job, more of a temporary fix really; the clutch is still a bit soft but am going to use the two man method tomorrow to do it right.

    I'm a newbie on here although I've had my 200 Tdi Defender 90 for about a year now.

    I'm a bit of a green laning enthusiast although regularly break the cardinal sin of 'laning on my own. I have paid the price recently (stuck at the bottom of a deep ditch, being propped up by a tree!) and have suffered a bit of panel damage (it was a matter of time really!).

    I want to make a few improvements over the next few years, notably some decent A/T tyres and new wheels, a winch, snorkel etc.

    I am learning to do repairs myself bit by bit but really only have a very basic knowledge of mechanics and such. I'm pretty lucky to have a very helpful Landy mechanic over my way though and if he thinks you can do something yourself he will tell you how to do it over the phone.

    Looking forward to having a natter with a few of you about land rovers
